Air Berlin was an airline full of traditions. It had been established right after the second world war for the traffic to and from West Berlin and originally Air Berlin was an American company. It developed into a low-cost airline and for a while it was a huge success. It became Germany's second largest airline after Lufthansa and it tried to change from a low-cost flyer to a "real" quality airline. It for example was able to join in the One World alliance. But it grew too rapidly. At its peak it was Europe's 10th largest airline. Air Berlin's service was excellent, but ticket prices remained low. The airline also expanded too rapidly. The result was that Air Berlin went bankrupt in October 2017.

This machine, D-ALPG was one of Air Berlin's biggest machines. It is an Airbus A330 version 200 which was originally delivered to LTU in 2002. It flew for Air Berlin from 04/2011 onwards. After Air Berlin's collapse, the machine went to Aigle Azur of France and in 2019 it is reported to being just stored.
