Subject: 'Little Elvis' - QT Demo moovie?

List Folks,

A long, long time ago, at a MUG meeting in a galaxy far, far away, I copied
from an Apple Quicktime Demo CD a moovie called 'Little Elvis'.

It ran for about about three minutes, and I remember that it was created, at
Apple, by someone called 'Maura' and some other folks with a sense of humour
(I guess they have likely lost their jobs by now!).

In the years between then and now, I've changed Macs numerous times and
re-initialised my HD more times than I care to remember - and have lost the
file.

Does anyone know if the file is anywhere to be found on the net, or could
someone that has a copy upload it to a web site or iDisk? I seem to recall
that it was about 15mB!

Hopefully

Subject: (C) Eudora vs. Outlook

Dear Digest readers,
For those of you not wanting to go to Eudora because you think it is
costly compared to Outlook some things you may have not known.
Eudora has a free version that is as capable as Outlook in many ways.
While it does have a banner, it only takes up 1 inch x 1 inch (2.54
cm) of your screen real estate. It's mailboxes are in a separate
window, which means you can use less of your screen for showing all
the mailboxes than Outlook's requisite frame which takes up the whole
side of the screen when the message is displayed. So one could
argue this design decision makes Eudora takes less screen real
estate, even with the banner! Some other things Eudora has are:

1. on the fly full header display for proper reporting of spam.
2. on the fly picking of the signature you will use in any message.
You can of course pick no signature.
3. multiple personality settings for people with multiple e-mail
accounts. On the fly changing of e-mail account settings.
4. it will launch from any settings file so you can set it up for each user.
5. spell checking which underlines mis-spelled words, which can then
be control-clicked for optional replacement spellings.
6. View all messages as text, so you aren't forced to see HTML
messages which can slow you down.
7. Drag attachments whose icon is at the bottom of the message to the desktop.
8. On the fly deciding between Binhex, UUEncode, AppleSingle,
AppleDouble (Mime) encoding.
9. On the fly deciding between showing message text below the subject
frame or just showing the subject frame of the mailbox.
10. And it doesn't crash on 50,000 messages with only 12 MB of RAM
assigned to it.
11. In fact you can make subfolders of folders containing your
mailboxes, and transfer messages through a hierarchical menu or to a
new mailbox.
12. It remembers all the e-mail addresses of all the people you sent
mail to, and gives you the option to drag those addresses to your
addressbook.
13. The mailboxes window like the mailboxes frame of Outlook can have
drag and drop of messages from the subject frame to the mailboxes.
It is invisible unless you want to have it open.
14. big icons in the toolbar are optional for those who have trouble
seeing small icons.

About its only weakness are its filters which are limited to three
conditional statements. But if you consider that filtering is
equivalent to putting your head in the sand, and that you can easily
forward full headers to abuse@whoever.net to actually get the spam
stopped, Eudora doesn't really need filters, and is more proactive
stopping spam.

This is not an advertisement from Qualcomm. I just thought since
I've seen postings in the newsgroups criticizing Eudora for not being
free, I'd post a post for those people who have not used the latest
version of Eudora to know what they are missing.

Sincerely,
abrody@smart.net

Subject: [*] Including Tax Submission

Including Tax 1.5.1

Including Tax! is a freeware pricing calculator that allows you to
calculate tax-inclusive prices given a dollar value and a tax rate,
or tax-exclusive prices given a tax rate and an inclusive figure. You
can also calculate international prices based on exchange rate values.

The results of the calculations are recorded in an editable text
field, which can be copied, printed, pasted into a spreadsheet,
and/or manually annotated.

One additional feature is the ability to use addition ('+') and
multiplication ('*') symbols in the Amount field. For example, you
can automatically add 7.72 and 3.35, and calculate the tax and
tax-inclusive total by typing '7.72+3.35' in the Amount field. This
version does not support the mixing of addition and multiplication -
use one or the other, not both together.

We recognise that the functionality provided by Including Tax! could
easily be duplicated by using a spreadsheet application, with a
couple of simple formulas. However, sometimes, a spreadsheet is just
not convenient, especially when you want to quickly calculate a
couple of totals. Some people will find this application of no use,
others, whose need will be solved by Including Tax!, will find it
very useful!

Including Tax! will run on all PPC- based Macintosh computers. It
requires 900K of free RAM, and a minimum of System 7.1.

A version for Windows 95 (minimum) is also available.

MacJamz 1.0

This is the ppc version of MacJamz, a simple mp3 player. It was designed to be

1) an inexpensive alternative to some of the other mp3 software out there
2) able to perform the basic function of playing mp3 files

MacJamz is essentially free, but it would be real cool if someone
appreciated it enough to stick a dollar in an envelope and send it to
me. If not, it'd still be cool if you could send anything at all just
to let me know you downloaded it (postcards, pizza coupons, something
your kid colored, email, really anything!).

Issues

MacJamz has not been tested on machines without a G3 or G4 or OS9.
Memory allotment may need to be increased.
File names must have the .mp3 file extension.
If I get enough response, the next version will have the ability to save playlists.

Subject: [*] Macro/Automation Utility: TriVectus Launch Key 4.0

[This submission should replace /gui/launch-key-30.hqx.]

What is Launch Key?
-------------------
Launch Key is an automation utility that lets your Mac automatically
do almost anything. You can configure it to perform tasks at the
touch of a key (no matter what program you're in), at regular
intervals (every Wednesday at noon), at a specific time (Feb. 11 at
11:30), or after a period of inactivity (similar to a screen saver).

Launch Key is based around Actions. Actions perform a single task,
for example, bringing the Finder to the front. A number of Actions
are bundled, including ones to select menu items in any application,
launch or open any Finder object, post messages, type blocks of text,
play sounds, open URLs, send Apple events, quit all applications,
switch the front-most application, lock all the your keychains, shut
down your Mac, put it to sleep, and more. Actions are grouped
together into collections called Sets that can be as complex as you
wish. Some examples of tasks you might have Launch Key perform are:

* Automatically initiate a system back-up at midnight of each day.

* Archive important mail messages as you read them.

* Launch all of your Internet applications at the touch of a key.

* Quit all of your Internet applications at the touch of another key.

* Open all the documents, folders, and applications associated with
a project, with one key press.

* Type out a standard e-mail reply in just seconds at the touch of a key.

* Quickly mount a couple of network volumes, and copy a set of
documents to each of them.

* Quickly and accurately type your e-mail address or web site URL
into any program with a keystroke.

* Remind you of an important upcoming event.

* Perform a general clean-up before shutting down-e.g., emptying the
trash and putting away documents.

* Let multiple users restore their workspace states, including open
applications, windows, etc.

The most Finder-like FTP client for the MacOS has just got better.

NetFinder was the first FTP client to use the Finder hierarchy listing
paradigm. With an intuitive user interface that everyone is familiar
with, users can begin to use this program in no time at all.

NetFinder v1.x started the FTP client war, by being the first FTP client to:
- support resume downloading after you quit or crash.
- add drag and drop support for all operations including moving files from
one folder to another, server to server coping as well as the standard
  uploading, downloading and trashing...
- inline filename editing, just like the Finder.
- integrated BBEdit support for transparent file editing.
- support for setting permissions on files and folders (even recursively).

The Finder-like listing window supports viewing by name, date, size, and
permissions. Other features include automatic binhex, macbinary and text
translation for uploads and downloads. Supports many ftp servers.
Has speech support. Internet Config savvy. Supports bookmark lists.

What's New in v2.1.2

- improved speed of listing... finally.
- improved support for Edit in BBEdit.
- added support for viewing Movies and playing MP3's and more via
  View As Graphic/Media menu.
- added support for other Editors.
- fixed a number of bugs to improved stability.
- updated OpenSSLLib to v0.9.5a of the OpenSSL source. Improved security.
- plus many more improvements and fixes.

Subject: [*] Pepper 3.0, a new text editor for MacOS

Hekkelman Programmatuur b.v. has released Pepper, a new and powerful text
editor for MacOS. Pepper is an editor targeted at programmers, script coders
and HTML writers, but since it is such a powerful and yet easy to use tool
you can use it for any task that involves working with plain text.

Among the unique features offered by Pepper are:

*intelligent and extendable language support through addons with syntax
styling as opposed to mere syntax coloring. Currently supported languages
are: HTML (with JavaScript and PHP embedded), C/C++, Pascal, Oberon-2, Perl,
Python, Rez, Shell, TeX
*identifier completion
*incremental search
*ToolServer integration with stderr parsing
*extensions and script extensions (apply a perl script to a selection e.g.)
*fully configurable keybindings
*rectangular selections

And of course Pepper offers all the features available in other major
commercial text editors currently known on MacOS.

Pepper is a descendant of the popular Pe for BeOS, an editor that has been
used extensively by many, not only to write code but also novels and other
books (Neal Stephenson and Scot Hacker e.g.). Pepper is more than a port, it
offers many new features and interface enhancements when compared to its
predecessor.

System requirements for Pepper are a PowerMac running MacOS 8.6.

Pepper is sold as shareware, single license fee is USD 45, site license is
USD 400 and upgrades from Pe for BeOS are available at USD 25.

original Smart Scroll brings Proportional Thumbs and Live Scrolling to
applications such as Netscape, Emailer, AppleWorks, Word, and most system
add-ons such as control panels.

Version 3.7 features an all new scrolling control engine for improved
smoothness. It also adds support for QuarkXpress and WordPerfect, and
solves issues with PowerMail and a few other apps.

Smart Scroll runs on Mac OS 9.0.4 and previous versions (going back to
System 7.0). It is shareware, so you can try it for free then buy only if
you like it. The shareware fee is $12, registered users of previous
versions may upgrade for free.

You may download Smart Scroll or get more info from www.marcmoini.com.

Subject: [*] VSE My Privacy 1.2 - Store your passwords with 448-bit encryption

VSE My Privacy 1.2 is an easy to use data security software that
allows Mac users to store and organize their confidential data in a
safe place. It uses a military strength uncrackable 448-bit
encryption algorithm to encrypt your data.

With VSE My Privacy, users have all their passwords and confidential
information ready to hand when they need it. The database can be
opened from all Macintosh applications with a single mouse click.

Despite the strong encryption algorithm of VSE My Privacy the
application is easy to use so that every Mac user can use it within
minutes.

The new version expands the range of useful features by a "Fast Copy"
button that automatically recognizes passwords in VSE My Privacy
entries and copies them to the clipboard with a single mouse click.
Other improvements have been added and minor bugs have been fixed.

System requirements: PowerPC/G3/G4

There are several ways I know of to do this, one is a free separate
program: Yours, Love, Sincerely 2.0.1. Get the free program. :-}

Subject: getting Mac/PC to talk via Ethernet

My husband and I have 2 Macs and one PC all connected via Ethernet.
We use PC MacLAN to share files and a printer. All of this works well
but we also want to be able to play games (particularly Diablo II)
between the Mac and the PC using TCP/IP.

Is this possible? If so, how can it be done? I can configure the PC
to have a static IP address but when I attempt to connect to a game,
it says it can't be found. The Macs can't talk to the PC or find the
IP address when using Diablo II.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Shari

The LW NTR has three ports at the back: the 8 pin circular, 25 pin RS232 and
36 pin Centronics. There is also a push switch on the back to configure
amongst the different connection types. Position 0 sets it up for:

8 pin port: LocalTalk, Postscript batch; 25pin: Serial 9600, no parity, 8
data bits and 1 stop bit, XON/XOFF handshaking, Postscript Batch; Parallel:
Centronics, Postscript Batch. (This is the setting I have on mine)

You can connect it directly to a Mac via the Imagewriter II printer cable
(round connector with 8 pins on both ends) *and* have it set up using
AppleTalk via LocalTalk. Alternatively, you can make a simple network using
two PhoneNet boxes and a phone cable.

I've used it with the LW driver from System 6.0.8 and LW 8 -- it works fine.
The LW drivers only use AppleTalk (but you can connect it directly to one
Mac, see above).

None necessary

Just plug the LW NTR into the network using the appropriate network box
(AppleTalk round connector box or PhoneNet) and it'll work just fine!

Let me know if you have any difficulties or comments!

It does. Just make the found-items window a little shorter, and below
is the path to any single item selected in the found-items window.
Hope this helps. Cheers,
