Announcing the release of Kineticon 1.1.4! Bring your Mac's motionless icons to life! Kineticon is a system extension which replaces normal, static icons on your Macintosh's desktop and in its windows with chosen animated icons. Kineticon is fully configurable, allowing you to choose which icons should animate simply by enabling them within Kineticon's editor. Kineticon Editor (included in the Kineticon package) allows you to create custom animations which can be made to appear in place of any icon displayed by your Macintosh. With Kineticon you will have THE COOLEST hard drive icon on your block! With Kineticon you will have THE CUTEST trash can icon in your neighborhood! And remember, if you don't like the included animations, you can easily make your own! Some of the changes in version 1.1.4 from version 1.1.3: * Fixed a couple of bugs in Kineticon Editor including a bug introduced in version 1.1.3 which would cause the editor to crash on launch if Internet Config was NOT installed. System requirements: * Any Macintosh with at least a 68020 processor (both 68K and PowerPC Macs are supported). * System 7.1 or higher (may work on earlier systems above 7.0 - only tested with systems 7.5 through 8.1). * Color (doesn't work in grayscale or black and white, sorry). * Free RAM: at least 300K. More RAM is needed depending on how many animating icons are enabled. * 2 MB of hard drive space (for the extension, editor and animating icon files). * Faster Macs (such as PowerMacs) are recommended. Cost: * All this for only $10 US! For more information, please read the READ ME file enclosed with Kineticon. You'll need to find the application, do a Get Info and change the size, then change it BACK when you quit. Or, do you have several large programs that are set to use a lot of memory? Whenever you need to use two of them at the same time, you go through the same process to keep the first one from using the memory the others need. LaunchControl can do all this for you, and more, whenever you open an application (even by clicking a document icon - you'll never need to locate the application itself again.) Just hold down a hot key when opening, and you'll get a dialog that lets you: - Open at the minimum, maximum (the maximum size is displayed), or any other size in between. - Save the new size if you like. - Cancel, if memory is too low and you don't want to wait for the program to start up, quit and free up more memory, and start it again. Version 1.1 adds the ability to change the modifier keys used to invoke LaunchControl. (The default is the Control key, which conflicts annoyingly with OS8's Contextual Menus.) this is done directly from the LaunchControl dialog - no Control Panel required! Features include the opportunity to do inflection exercises, and translation exercises in both directions; to record and play sound for single words; and to do exercises based on sound. The program keeps a record of exercises, and identifies the words that the student has difficulty with. Along with the program, you need a module for the target language concerned. The program can also be used as an authoring tool to write your own modules of inflected words for any language. A built-in 'inflection-generator' simplifies the addition of these words. A 'Find' feature allows the modules to be used as bilingual dictionaries. Ready-made modules are already available for certain languages. Then quit the application. Back in the Finder, highlight the volume and select "Erase disk" from the "Special" menu. When the erase disk dialog comes up, pull down the selection for "Macintosh xGB" (or xxxMB) and select "Macintosh Enhanced xGB" instead. That gives you an HFS+ formatted volume with the APT 4.1 driver. You may already know that Apple recommends against using HFS+ on your startup disk, which I just learned a few days ago from a clued-in Info-Mac correspondent. He also made a strong case for always reading Apple's "Read Me" files, especially the ones for Mac OS 8. You really don't need a ready made app.: you should be able to make it do what you want without any programming. HC's reporting capabilities are limited, but fine for what you need. Maybe I'm not understanding ClarisWorks well, and just some >instruction here can solve my problem? Yes, a spreadsheet would do it. Even the one in ClarisWorks. But the data base in ClarisWorks should do fine. Just go into the layout mode (you don't mention what version of ClarisWorks you are using, so the instructions won't be too detailed, but undoubtedly your manual will quickly show you how to do this if you don't know). Go to the Text field you are wanting to resize, and using the arrow tool in the layout, drag the field bigger. If there isn't room to do so, you will need to increase the size of the "Body Part" of the layout. Just find the horizontal line above the Footer part, then find the label that says "Body" on that divider line, and drag in downward to make the part bigger. Then you can resize your text field to be big enough for the text you want to enter. Of course, Hypercard would also let you make fields the way you wish. Just try it. I own a Mac clone from Mactell (4 GB hard disk). Since installing Mac OS 8.0, I noticed the problem with small files taking a lot of space (like a 5K archive shows up taking 64K). The ClarisWorks database module should accomplish all this swimmingly, Brian. As far as page width goes, try selecting the landscape icon in the Page Setup dialog box under the File menu. This will give you more useable screen space for building your layout(s). Since you won't be printing, you can maximize the available space by opening the Document dialog box under the Format menu and setting all four margins to 0. Performing these two operations will give you an 11 x 8.5 landscape window that will completely fill the viewable area of a 15" or 17" monitor at 832 x 624 resolution. For an even larger layout window, choose legal size paper in the Page Setup dialog box. There are several ways to control field size. The simplest is to select a field while you are in layout mode and drag one of the corner handles. Perhaps you have been trying to do this while in browse mode. You cannot move or resize fields while in browse mode. As far as your article summary field is concerned, the current version of ClarisWorks, v5, greatly expanded the amount of text that any given field can hold. I don't remember the old and the new limits, but if your article summary field can't handle the amount of text you need to stuff into it, you may want to consider upgrading to v5. Finally, ClarisWorks' on line help, in my opinion, is very, well, helpful. Seek and ye shall find! Good luck with your project. -- Jeff Frankel Windsor, Maine USA ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Apr 1998 08:39:44 -0400 From: Deborah Foss Subject: Info-Mac Digest V16 #90 I've been watching the Office 98 thread now, but I have yet to see an >answer to my question: can Office 98 run on a slower PPC Mac? > >The MS specs call for a minimum clock speed of 133 MHz (it might a little >higher, but I think this is right). The user guide that originally would have been supplied with the printer was not a very extensive document, and (at least in the UK) there was never a publicly available service manual.
