The Love for Three Oranges 1.1 is an update to a previous shareware
Midnight Hour Graphics color scheme. It is intended for use with
Kaleidoscope 1.8.2 and above, a shareware control panel created by Greg
Landweber, et.al. It requires Kaleidoscope 1.8.2, although it will work
with Kaleidoscope 1.5 and above, and a monitor capable of displaying a
minimum of 256 colors. The Midnight Hour Graphics website is located at
http://www.mother.com/~pce
Permission to distribute this scheme or any of its associated icons or
desktop patterns must be received in writing from the author; e-mail pce@

Subject: [*] Quit Everything 2.0
QuitEverything is a simple script that quits all running
applications, except the Finder, or any applications that you want to
configure as part of an internal exceptions list. I highly recommend that
you set the internal exceptions list even if you think there are no apps
you want to save as exceptions. The reason for this is that there may be
a background application that can slow down the operation of quit
everything. Things like KeyQuencer and Kensington Turbo Mouse (or
Trackball) run background only processes (apps) that you may not see in
the application menu.
If you are like me, when I am working on a project, I end up with 4,
5, 6 or more applications running at the same time. Sometimes I need to
open an application for one minor step in processing (why must everyone
use a different text editor for read me files--BBEdit, Simple Text, and
others). It gets to be a bit of a chore to bring 10 different
applications to the front to quit them, so I wrote a script to do it
automatically. This is v2.0 which improves overall speed and adds an
internal exceptions list.
System requirements:
1. Applescript must be installed on your system. This is a standard
part of the MacOS these days, so it should be installed if you are
running any version of System 7.5 or higher.
2. You must have S=E4ndi's Additions installed. S=E4ndi's Additions is =
a
free Osax, available from the usual sources (InfoMac, UMich, the
AppleScript resource sites), or from my scripting page at

Bookmark Thing is a light-weight bookmark assistant, intended to work in
conjunction with Internet Config. It was designed with these two
principles in mind:
1. I don't want yet another application for managing hierarchical
collections of things - I've already got something called the Finder,
which works quite nicely thank you very much.
2. I don't want all my bookmarks linked to any particular application -
today I'm using IE4 and Anarchie; a while ago, it was Netscape and Fetch;
tomorrow, who knows...
Bookmark Thing requires System 7, Internet Config, and a PowerPC.

Subject: [*] BrowserCleanQuit3.1
CleanQuit is a simple way of doing two things with one step--it will quit
your web browser and then empty out the cache folder, getting rid of all
those files that the browser collects while you surf the web. This has
been in use by a small group of friends for some time, and I know it
works well with Netscape. Since I don't know anyone that actually uses
Internet Explorer, this hasn't been "stress tested" with that browser,
but I did do some basic testing. The one feature that isn't yet built
into this script is a way of saving the Cache History file, but I find
that I don't need to save it. If this is a concern for you, wait until I
write that feature in as an option.
System requirements:
1. Applescript must be installed on your system. This is a standard
part of the MacOS these days, so it should be installed if you are

These tables enable you to convert Cyrillic HTML (and text)

MacCyrillic, ISO-IR-111 (KOI-8), ISO-8859-5, Windows-1251,
IBM866 (Code Page 866), Unicode.

"native" Macintosh fonts but you can present them on the WWW
in other encodings.
This file may be included on the Info-Mac CD-ROM.

Subject: [*] Default Folder D-2.8.2 - German Open/Save dialog enhancer
Following is a submission of the German version of Default Folder 2.8.2.
It should be archived alongside the English version, replacing Default
Folder D-2.8.1.
Default Folder is a shareware control panel that enhances Open and Save
dialog boxes to make it easier for you to manage files on your Macintosh.
It provides many of the essential features of the commercial SuperBoomerang
and Directory Assistance utilities, but without the infrequently used
extras that take their toll in compatibility, memory, and CPU usage. And
it's fully compatible with Mac OS 8.1.
Default Folder's time-saving Open and Save dialog enhancements allow you to:
- Set up a default folder for any or all applications.
- Switch among recently used folders from a pop-up menu.
- See available disk space and switch between disks from a pop-up menu.
- Click on a Finder window to display it in an Open or Save dialog.
- Open the folder shown in an Open or Save dialog in the Finder.
- Create folders, get information (including changing name, type, and
creator), and move items to the Trash from within file dialogs.
- "Rebound" back to the last file you used.
- Make "Replace" the default option instead of "Cancel" when saving
a file with the same name as an existing file.
- Speed up the display of Open and Save dialogs by turning off custom
color icons in the file list.
Default Folder will operate on any Macintosh running System 7 or higher.
In addition to the standard internet archives, information and updates are
available at:
Default Folder may be included on the UMich and Info-Mac CD-ROMs.
Version 2.8.2 of Default Folder provides several improvements to ensure
compatibility for all users:
----------------------------
- The Default Folder Control Strip module now properly displays its
menu when the menu is taller than the screen.
- Default Folder is now integrated with the forthcoming version of
James Thomson's DragThing utility. Clicking on a DragThing item while
an Open/Save dialog is displayed will switch to that item's folder.

Subject: [*] Desktop Resetter 1.0
Do you keep your most used programs and files on your desktop for easy access?
Ever accidently choose Clean Up in the Finder or find that after you played
that fun game which switched your monitor resolution, your icons got all
screwed up thrown all over your desktop? Especially after you just spent all
that time placing them nice and neatly?
Desktop Resetter will 'remember' where you keep your icons, and if they ever
get moved, just run this program and it will automatically re-arrange them to
the positions you'd set them to! It'll even do it in the background. If you
have an '040 processor or better (PPC), it will probably only take about 2
seconds or so.

Subject: [*] DragAnyWindow 4.3 fat - Live window dragging
Program: DragAnyWindow 4.3 FAT
Author: Alessandro Levi Montalcini
Price: $10 (shareware)
Register: http://order.kagi.com/?67
Download: http://www.montalcini.com
DragAnyWindow is a way cool control panel that enhances the
look and behavior of window dragging. When you drag a window's
title bar and Solid Dragging is active, the whole window image
is moved instead of a dull-looking window outline. If the Update
Windows option is also active, all windows are updated on the
fly without waiting for you to release the mouse. Not as fast as
the BeOS, but definitely better than the standard MacOS
behavior!
DragAnyWindow also allows you to easily move any kind of
window, including dialogs, alerts, standard "Open" and "Save"
dialogs, game windows and other non-movable windows. It lets you
bring back to the desktop any window that has gone out of sight,
or center the front window on the main screen with a single
keystroke. These options are very useful for old applications
designed for the 9" screen (which often use fixed windows) and
for moving modal dialogs and windows behind them.
New in version 4.3:
- Added an option to exclude selected applications from the
solid and live dragging features.
- Found a work-around for an incompatibility with some
Microsoft applications such as Excel.
- Fixed a minor problem with desk accessories.

Subject: [*] Extensions Strip 1.5
Extensions Strip is a combination application and control panel that work
together to provide a powerful environment to run control strip modules in. Its
theme is "extensions with a global interface" because control strip modules,
particularly Extensions Strip savvy ones, get the best of both the extension and
application worlds, without any conflicts!
Feature summary:
- Operates on all Macs (with Color Quickdraw & System 7.1 or later) and
runs Power PC native with 68K compatibility.
- Backward compatible with all existing control strip modules and hosts a
new breed of Power PC native and Extensions Strip savvy modules.
- Dynamically configurable.
- Integrated drag and drop.
- Includes Universal C and Pascal header files for the API, and a sample
FAT C project to demonstrate it.
- Includes a new, freeware module called Process Manager. It is a FAT
binary, Extensions Strip savvy, module for displaying and accessing
processes.
For more information or downloads: http://www.pair.com/ammon/skidperfect/es
v. 1.5 Changes:
Features:
* Strips will stick to the corners of monitors when you drag them there.
This is very useful if you have a monitor that can change resolutions.
* You can now set a hide/show key and have the strip auto-hide in screensavers.
* When dragging a module over a strip, the copy cursor is displayed if the
file will be copied (just like in OS 8). Likewise, if you hold down the
command and option keys, the create alias cursor will be displayed, and an
alias to the module will be created when the mouse is released.
* Features a MacsBug (programmer's utility) plugin called 'esmod dcmd' that
displays the name of the module currently executing. Useful for
determining if a specific module caused your Mac to crash.
Other:
* When a strip is hidden or window-shaded, no idle time is given to the modules.
* Supports Internet Config for registration stuff and in the control
panel's About box.
* Improved the Process Manager and Control Panels Strip modules (see their
docs). Only these modules are distributed with ES now to keep things
simple.
Fixes:
* OS 8 compatible:
- Apple's sound module found in OS 8 now works.
- The control panel used to draw the controls funny.
* Converted source code to CodeWarrior IDE 2 and fixed a few obscure bugs.
* Got a permanent web page for Skidperfect! As time permits I'm slowly
improving this site (listed above).
* Added the new features to the documentation and improved the Cost/fee and
registration section.

Subject: [*] Save Clipboard 1.5
SaveClipBoard is a simple script which takes the text from the
clipboard and saves it to a text file. You can keep addin "clippings" to
this text file without overwriting the previous contents. If you are
going through a web page, or other document, and want to save snippets of
information (text only) such as URL's, dates, or whatever turns you on,
just copy the text to the clipboard, and run this script. In v1.4 you
can opt to start the saved text clipping with a date/time stamp and end
the clipping with a divider line as in this example:
Tuesday, October 28, 1997 11:27:47 AM
Save ClipBoard v1.3
-------------------------
The time/date stamp and the divider line are optional, and you can
have either of these options turned on, or both, or neither. This gives
you the most flexibility in how the saved clippings are formatted. You
must set these options (as well as your target text file) the first time
you run SaveClipboard, and you can always change these options by
launching SaveClipboard with the Option key down. You will be presented
with a series of option dialogs where you can configure your preferences.
System requirements:
1. Applescript must be installed on your system. This is a standard
part of the MacOS these days, so it should be installed if you are
running any version of System 7.5 or higher. Most of the script relies on
the standard scripting additions installed with AppleScript.
2. You must have Jon's Commands installed. Jon's Commands is
available from Info-Mac archives or from Jon Pugh's page at

Subject: [*] Snap'n Clip 1.1, 1.1J
Have you ever feel like this ?
* I wish I could save the captured image into a clipping file so that I can
view it easily later.
* I wish I could see the content of the captured image easily by looking at
icons.
* I wish I can cancel the operation in the middle without creating capture file.
* I wish I could capture non-rectangle shape image easily without making
wastful space around the image.
* Shoot, the mouse has just moved a little bit when I release the mouse
button. I wish I could select the capturing area more easily.
These are the things I always feel when I am using screen capture tools.
What's the reason I develop this Snap'n Clip.
You can use Snap'n Clip in many ways. I myself uses it frequently to take a
picture memo while I am surfing the WWW. It's easy to take the WWW page
with images and text with Snap'n Clip. I only use HTML/image download
programs or off-line browsing tools that utilize the browser's cache for
capturing entire site. These tools are really useful, but it's not good for
taking only the part of the page as a memo.
Captured picture will be saved as a picture clipping file in the DeskTop with
a thumbnail icon. So you can see it later just by double-cliking them from
the Finder. No need to use graphic application program. Snap'n Clip has
many nice
features to make the screen capturing easy.
** What's New with 1.1 **
1.1 has added the shutter sound (like System's capturing tool) and the
inversed capturing area effect when it capture the screen.
Also there are some minor improvements in operation.

What is World Clock CSM?
You are a real globetrotter and spend one day in New York, one in Tokyo and
one in Sydney? You live in a huge country? You have frequent contacts with
people from other continents or foreign companies?
MaBaSoft World Clock CSM will then make your life easier.
MaBaSoft World Clock CSM is a module for the control strip that implements
a multi-time clock. It displays your local time, Universal Time (UTC) or
the current time in a city belonging to a different time zone. Up to 23
frequently used cities can be saved in World Clock menu. Different time
formats and display options are available.
MaBasoft World Clock CSM is 5 US$ shareware. It available from the MaBaSoft
ftp site at
ftp://macware.erehwon.org/pub/by_author/MaBaSoft/World_Clock_CSM_1.1.2.sit
and from all major Macintosh shareware ftp sites.
System Requirements
MaBaSoft World Clock CSM runs on all types of Mac and needs System 7.1.1 or
higher.
Finder Scripting Extension, Date & Time control panel and Control Strip
control panel need to be installed.
What's new in MaBaSoft World Clock CSM v1.1.2?
A bug causing "garbage text" to be introduced in World Clock's display has
been fixed. The problem came up with the "Show Weekday" option checked and
was due to a conflict of World Clock CSM with both MS Office 98 Assistant
and SurfExpress. The conflict may have concerned other applications, to.
World Clock CSM now checks the correctness of the P-RAM time zone
information. This is done because a corrupted P-RAM time zone information
causes World Clock's alternate times to be incorrect.
In case of corrupted data, World Clock CSM automatically restores the
correct time information.

Subject: Ethernetworking PLW NTR
Greetings, fellow Mac-ophiles!
I am considering (and just considering at this point) networking my two Macs
(IIsi running MacOS 7.6 and UMAX C600 running 8.0 [maybe 8.1 soon]) and
printer (Personal LaserWriter NTR) via ethernet. I am a musician and I use
Finale from which I must both print (currently requiring LocalTalk) and use
MIDI (which hates LocalTalk) at the same time. Obviously, I can't do both in
my current LocalTalk only situation. I'd also like to free up a slot on my
Power PortJuggler.
The computers are no problem. Hubs are cheap and cards are cheaper so I have
no great concerns about connecting them. The printer, however, is another
story. The PLW NTR has a DIN-8 serial port and a standard parallel port.
This gives me (I think) two options: a LocalTalk-to-Ethernet bridge on the
serial port, or an external print server on the parallel port.
My questions: 1) Am I correct that these are both options? If not, which
won't work?
2) Are they the only options? If not, what else is possible?
3) As both the bridge and the print servers cost about the same (I can get
either for $200-250 mail order) which option would be better for me as a Mac
user with the above configuration? By "better" I'm thinking in terms of
printing speed, management, maintenance, and compatibility.
Especially looking for people who may have done this already, but any
knowledgeable replies will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Byron

Subject: HFS+ questions
Hi there, folks !
I finally took the big brave step and dumped my old reliable system 7.6.1
and went for Mac OS 8.1. I had to dump Now Super Boomerang and Now Menus
but maybe it was worth it.
In addition to that I took an even more brave step and formatted my 2
internal disks (2GB + 4 GB) to HFS+, Apple's extended format that makes
your disk "much bigger". Well, everything works well and I like Mac OS 8.1
more and more. It's much "snappier" than my 7.6.1. However, that might be
due to that I've also dumped all my old extensions and control panels
together with my old system.
However, I have three questions regarding the HFS+ format... I would be
most grateful if you Mac-Gurus could help me out !
First the most important question:
I have a third disk with a A/UX partition and a HFS partition. On the A/UX
partition , I've installed MkLinux (great system if you're serious about
computing). However, I would like to reformat this disk to 1 HFS+ partition
and one A/UX partition. How do you do that ? It seems that Apple's
formatter doesn't support A/UX partitions any longer...
They seem to support DOS-format, though...
Second, less important question. Just by curiosity I wonder...
The advantage with HFS+ is that the block size is 4k. That means that each
file on the disk wastes at maximum less than 4 k, right ?
Facts, when I do a "Get info" on my 2 GB disk I get the following:
Capacity: 1.8GB
Used: 1.5 GB on disk (1 645 883 392 bytes), for 15866 items
So, how can one explain that I waste 1.645 GB - 1.5 GB = 145 MB for my
15866 files. If I multiply 15866 files with 4k then I get 63.464 MB, which
is the number of maximum wasted space I should have.
Third question... Not important now, but maybe later...
How do one defragment and optimize HFS+ disks ? Neither Norton SpeedDoubler
nor DiskExpress Pro works for HFS+ disks...
TIA

Just been by my Win95-happy brother's house. Saw his NIN Theme. Wondered
if there was anybody with/anybody willing to do, a Kaleidoscope scheme
along those lines.
And I must make a correction to a previous post. I incorreectly observed
that DOS6.x allows for the repositioning of Win95 root level icons -- it
doesn't. But that doesn't mean some tweak to BlueBox isn't possible,
does it? Somehow, not having the $$$ to become a journeyman Mac
developer leaves me out of the loop on what's possible or not possible.
If if comes to waiting for Rhapsody2/Allegro and getting a 604 card for
my Quadra to run it with, I'll do that. But I always hold the MacOS to
be the "land of the highly unlikely made real," as the Jobs quote in my
sig line infers, so someone plz tell me the difference between them. I'd
hate to have to go to Linux for good.

Hi Info-Maccers:
I've got a situation where I'm hoping I can get some help from somebody.
I recently installed a network at home (simple AppleTalk, but to me it's
absolutely thrilling), and now I want to play games over it.
I've got this game, Spectre Supreme, which apparently can be played over
the network. I installed it on both machines - but - it needs two unique
copies to play over the network.
I tried calling all the regular places (MacWarehouse, Zone, Mall etc.) to
see if anybody had a copy I could purchase but nothing came up on their
computers.
I then tried the web to track down the company (Velocity) but they seem to
have gone out of business. Somebody also told me that Spectre Supreme was
now in public domain and that all I'd need was another registration number.
Is any of this true?
Would somebody be willing to sell their copy of Spectre, or trade for some
other game? Since it looks like this game is now in public domain, I guess
what I really need is another registration number. I would not mind
exchanging registration numbers either. Alternatively, if somebody can
point me to a site where I could download or purchase this game, I'd really
appreciate it.

TIA for any help/suggestions.
Sundaresh.
