Nope. 8.1 is locked into using 32 bit addressing.
You could possibly get a Mac Emulator program to emulate an older
Macintosh using 24 bit addressing...try www.emulation.net

Ted,
You can go two ways:
1) You can invest in the latest copy of MacLinkPlus Translators which
uses Mac OS Easy Open to convert foreign documents, or
2) You can figure out exactly what software your client is running and
get the equivalent Macintosh version. If their running Office for
Windows, Microsoft has just released Office 98 for the Macintosh. If the
use WordPerfect, Corel's WordPerfect for the Mac is a great word
processor.
I would say pick a software package that both you and your client can get
and then stick to that standard!
Cheers,
Chris

I have transfered many of graphs between PCs and Mac and oddly enoug the
only problem I have had was transfering images from a old PC scanner. The
files did not open or was garbled. I tried a lot of formats and bit depth
combinations but they did not open or was FUBAR.
I solved it by of using the image filer produced by the scanner and opened
that file in an image program on the PC and saved the file again from that
application in a nice compact format like JPG or GIF I never had any
problem with these. My guess is that the scanner software made an error
that the macintosh application is more sensitive than the PC in my case.
Even saving in the same format solved the problem!

Illustrator is a vector based, drawing program. Scanned images are
bitmaps. Regardless of how you save them, they need to be converted to
vector images to be "opened" in Illustrator. You can import a pict file
(a bitmap format) into Illustrator, but it isn't editable, it can be a
template for tracing or a background image. You can open scanned files
easily in Photoshop. It will recognize just about any graphic format.
Open it from within Photoshop by using the "file/open" command. When you
first copy the file over from the PC floppy, it has the generic "PC"
file type because it has no Macintosh resource fork, or because you've
not edited the file type conversion table that maps PC extensions (.xxx)
to a particular Macintosh application. Double clicking will prouduce the
error you describe with the result "cannot find the application."

>Thanks so much for your help.
First, use the Audio CD Player program to set the CD audio level to the
highest it will allow you to select (slide the slider all the way up). Have
it start playing your favorite audio CD. Occasionally, I find that some
program has changed the audio cd volume. I'm guessing it is some game doing
this, but at any rate, you may have to check the volume every once in a
while to see if it remains at the loudest level.
Now, use the Monitors and Sound control panel's "Sound" subsection to
adjust the "Computer System Volume" to a comfortable level for your
collection of audio CD's. The button on your monitor itself also controls
the system volume. Both controls are changing the same parameter in the
computer, so use whichever you prefer to use. You may also have a control
strip module that allows you to change the volume from the gray control
strip floating on your screen. Again, it affects the system volume in the
same way as the other two methods. This is very convenient for those of us
who do not have external speakers or a button on our monitors like you
have! :)
Finally, in the Monitors and Sound control panel, look in the "Alerts"
subsection. Lower the "System Alert Volume" to an appropriate level (one
which won't make the guys in the orange outfits jump out of their
handcuffs!). This volume slider tells the computer to play the alert sound
at the set percentage of the overall system volume. In other words, if your
computer system volume slider is set at the halfway point, and your system
alert volume is also set at the halfway point, then the alert sounds will
play at 25% of their loudest possible volume. I usually keep the alert
sounds just high enough to notice them--which, for my setup, means keeping
the slider almost to the quietest position.
>Oh, I'm running System 8.0 (haven't upgraded yet), with QuickTime 2.5,
>and AppleCD Audio Player v2.2.
The directions remain the same in System 8.1. In fact, I believe setting
the alert volume quieter than the overall volume is possible with any Mac
running Sound Manager 3.0 or above (through the non-unified Sound control
panel)... I can't remember for sure, though.

I just checked the G3 specs. No AAUI port. You can sure tell that
Steve (I know what's good for you) Jobs is back. The only approved

PCI card and eat up a slot for 10base2. That'd cost maybe half again
as much as an external adaptor (Dayna's is $60 at Macwarehouse).
I'm sort of glad our last machine upgrade was to a mere 604e machine.
We didn't have the extra $100 (net) expense of chucking a perfectly

The word processor I normally use for big jobs is MS Word 4. I've done a
large book in it, and would like to hand the thing to some readers with
Gates machines. I've only used a few characters beyond the ASCII set,
mainly smart quotes, but they don't come out right when my readers look at
the RTF I've generated. Is there a freeware utility to convert these into
whatever the Gates equivalents are?

Hi Ted,
Microsoft Word is about the best cross platform word processor there is.
The only problem is that fonts do not behave the same way on PCs and
Macs. This means that formatting will be a problem at times.
Be sure to use a font for which both Mac and PC versions exist. There
will still be differences, but you may be able to compensate.
Hope this helps,

Hello All,
The reseller configurations of the high end G3 minitowers (266 and now 300
mhz with the Ultra/Wide SCSI drives, 128mb RAM and graphic accelerator
board) do not include an internal Zip drive. Someone mentioned that you
couldn't put one in because of the Utra/Wide setup - either because of
space limitations or some hardware conflict. The Apple online store allows
adding a Zip drive in a custom configuration, but I don't know whether
it's smart enough to disallow impossible configurations.
So, does anyone know if you can add an internal zip drive to this setup?
For that matter, can any users of these high end machines offer any
comments or advice on them? Thanks.

I've sent them many E-mails and have received about 10 replies.
4 requesting my serial #
2 requesting my full serial #, not the 1used by the program during startup.
1 advising that the problem was too involved to answer by e-mail and that I
should fill out an online questionaire
1 advising me to use an older version of the Apple CD-Rom extension
2 asking me to restate the problem.
All this after I gave them the problem, CD drive info, System info, and test
results using an older external CD drive that worked with SoftWindows but not
with the Apple System software.
Their answer also stated that the don't have a Powerbook 1400 to test on so
they were at a loss to explain the problem.
Does anybody know if Connectix's version of the Windoze emulator works on a

While you are in the "as list" view on a particular folder, check to be
sure that the triangle towards the upper right end of the window (between
the scroll area and the window title) is pointing upwards. If it is
pointing downwards, then click it one time. This will reverse the sort back

Last week I placed this submission to the digest:
I have a colleague with an 8100 who is running system 8.1. Ever since System
7.6 he has had difficulty with the CD player's functionality. Although all
other functions of his machine seem to work well, whenever he wants to listen
to some music on CD, he must go to his Monitors & Sounds (v 1.3.2) control
panel and re-instruct the OS to recognize the CD player as a source for sound.
Here are the responses I got:
----
I have been having similar problems oon my PM 6500/225. Under MacOs 8.1,
there is a new CSM called SoundSource Strip that does just what you're looking
for. It will toggle between the Sound In port and the CD player.
****
Have you replaced the battery?
****
The answer is that the 8100 is known to suffer from this problem. The solution
is to use the older "Sound" control panel to set CD playthrough.
This setting will then be remembered.
You can copy the Sound control panel from an older system folder, or I believe
it's installed in the "Apple Extras" folder of OS8. It does not have to be
placed in the Control Panels folder, and it can co-exist with Monitors and
Sound. I have mine (along with Monitors) in the Apple Menu of my 8100.
----
Thanks to everyone who took the time to make thoughtful responses that helped
to solve the problem!

The patch will update version 3.5e - not 3.5.4 and earlier. If you have
3.5e, and the updater doesn't run, have you changed the name of the program
in the Finder? It should be "WordPerfect" or "Corel WordPerfect". In any
case, it's best to do a clean install of 3.5e from the CD, and then update
it.
If you have 3.5 (not with the "e"), the upgrade to 3.5e is on a CD, about $25.

I believe, Michael, that the updater patch is only for WordPerfect 3.5
*enhanced.* The enhanced version of WordPerfect 3.5, known as v3.5e, is
being only half-heartedly marketed by Corel, from what I can tell, and
is available from Corel directly for about $30 plus shipping as an
