CustomCompanyFolders 1.0
Hello, and thank you for downloading this shareware product. I hope the name
wasn't to mis-leading. I'm trying to say that with letters from the alphabet I
can create a lot of custom designed initialized folders.
They could be:
1. Your Name (short like Al, Ann, Joe, Pat etc.)
2. Your initials (2 to 3 with or without periods)
3. Your company logo (with initials only, like MMI, MM Inc., in-line straight
or slanted)
4. Computer related folders like Inits, EXTS, Apps, Inet etc.
So I've just included a set of A thru Z folders for $2 sharerware and an
invitation for you to contact me with your ideas of what type of "custom"
folders you might like. It's kind of like that key chain rack of names you see
in gift shops when traveling............. Your standing there shuffling
through to see if they have a "JIM" left that you could buy.
Some suggested uses for these $2 shareware "Initial Folders" that I hope
you'll purchase:
Use the "A" folder on the desktop or anywhere, for aliases, or Applications.
Use "C" for Cyberdog or "D" for Downloads. I think you get the picture.

Subject: [*] Dark Steel
Dark Steel is a cool metalic mac icon set. First when first released,
the Mac OS came with those bland, blue folders. Logically icons to
replace these blue miseries popped up. First came different colored
versions, then we were introduced to 3D liked beveled versions. After
getting bored with the limitations of folders, people progressed to
shapes other than folders.
When I came into the icon world I wanted to get everything out of the 2D
folder concept before moving on to other areas of icon design. Since
Epoch Icons was brought into this world I have been bringing all types
of cool 2D and 3D folders to your desktop, but here is one of the last
and finest 2D "3D" folder set. It features metallic and glass icons that
are so real you can almost feel the cold, dark metal on your desktop.
>From pure beveled metal to distorted, eroded, cracked, and tarnished
metal fantasies.
The set includes a couple of mini-series:
-Dark Steel
-Gold
-Dark Metal
-Mirrors
and

Subject: [*] Disk Charmer 3.1.1; disk erase/copy/verify utility
Disk Charmer is a neat utility that lets you conveniently erase and
copy disks, and handle disk images in DiskCopy and DiskDup+ format.
If you have Mac OS 8.1, you can now use the Mac OS Extended format
(a.k.a. HFS Plus) and even set the minimum allocation block size.
Disk Charmer lets you create larger disks: you gain 8K on 800K disks,
18K on HD disks, 1.5MB on Zips.
At least System 7 is required.
Help Balloons are everywhere.
Disk Charmer has a nice, modeless interface.
It fully supports drag&drop.
It supports the handy "Undo" feature we all know and love.
Disk Charmer was recently mentioned in MacWEEK:
New since version 3.1:
* Attempts to work around the infamous Apple Menu Options bug
(thanks to a kind, knowledgeable soul...)
* The Make disks larger option now creates slightly "less larger" disks
that cannot be corrupted by Mac OS 8.1
(see the separate document for details; thanks, Fran=E7ois Grieu).

mounted drives.
[Drive Monitor 3.x is PPC only, users of 68k based machines may be

MacOS 8.0 or newer.]
This was originally just a little program I threw together when I couldn't

I had...) It is now MacOS 8 Savvy, supporting some of the cool new appearance
manager features. __It now also supports volumes larger than 2GB properly.__
Well, lets see.... What does it do?
-Sort by whatever field you want
-Only show the fields that you are interested in
-Displays the names of all mounted volumes
-Displays the size of each of the volumes
-Displays the amount of free space on each volume
-Turns the entry for a volume red (default color) if it exceeds 90%
capacity
-Indicates if a volume is locked.

chess database for the Macintosh. ExaChess Lite provides most of the
features of ExaChess in a version suitable for maintaining a personal
games collection, and is free.
This release, version 1.2, adds several new features and fixes a number
of bugs. The new features include a Copy Position command to copy the
current board position as a picture, and a facility to search a database
for games between players over a particular Elo rating. See the Release
Notes for full details.
ExaChess now has its own web page! For the latest information about
ExaChess visit .
The features of ExaChess include:
- Direct support (without conversion) of ChessBase, NICBase, and PGN
databases, as well as ExaChess's own database formats.
- Search across all databases or just a single database file by player
name, event, year, result, ECO code, opening name, position, partial
position, material, special game features, or any combination of these.
- Shows ECO code and opening name for each game and statistics for all
matching games.
- Finds and allows easy removal of duplicate games from any database.
- Resizable, customizable 2-D color board with smooth animation.
- Flexible game parser that handles free-form text input, both algebraic
and descriptive, including move and position evaluations, variations
and text comments.
- Records full tree of moves. Switch to variation or return to main line.
- Shows opening tree (next moves for any opening position) with stats
from the database. Quickly find matching games for any opening position.
- Supports play against the database or against external 'chess engines'
via Apple Events, including ZZZZZZ (supplied), Crafty, GnuChess, and
MacChess (available at Mac and chess Internet archive sites).
ExaChess Lite omits a few features of ExaChess and is restricted to
showing the first 256 or 128 games only of larger databases.

Subject: [*] FontBook 3.2 (e) FAT
FontBook 3.2 (e), FAT
FontBook is a nice, tiny MacOS font utility. FontBook helps you to keep
track of your installed fonts, especially symbol or dingbats fonts.
FontBook let's you print reference cards for your most-used fonts. On these
reference cards you can find out all the different key combinations. It
contains a table with entries for all characters: e.g. what key is printed
when you press shift-alt-F or shift-5, etc. Or do you know the key code of
the big dot in the Helvetica font?
And, since version 3.0, there are many other nice example pages, that help
you to find the right font in the right time.
Some other features of FontBook:
- MultiPrint: Print all installed fonts with a few mouse clicks
- more than 20 example layout pages
- Save or Copy the entire page as a PICT file
- Choose any font from the system or from a disk (without installing it!)
- and many, many more...
FontBook 3.2 fixed some bugs in FontBook 3.1 and FontBook 3.0. And I added
a lot of new features like MultiFont pages (up to 75 fonts per page), some
new layouts, enhanced printing capabilities, etc.
BTW: FontBook is also available in German!

Subject: [*] MacCDDBv0.8
MacCDDB is a program that checks an internet server for the tracknames of
the audio CD currently in the computer. The tracknames are saved in a
file, where the Apple CD Audio Player can read them. This saves you from
having to type them in yourself :)
Requirements:
o System 7 or later
o OpenTransport
o CD-ROM drive
Version 0.8 fixes a major bug, where the program would not be able to
update the CD Remote Programs file.

Subject: [*] NameSplitter 1.2 (FileMaker utility)
This is a fully functional FileMaker Pro (version 3.0+) database for
Windows or Macintosh.
The file is designed to handle a situation where you have an existing
database with a person's name in one field ("Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.")
and you want to separate the components into separate fields -- "Dr.",
"Martin", "Luther", "King", "Jr.".
You can import the data from the single field of the original database
into this Splitter, and it will divide the data into five fields --
title, first name, middle name, last name and suffix. You can then use
the FileMaker Pro Lookup function to move the separated data back to the
original database.
This Splitter includes some sample data to show you how it will handle
certain situations. You might play around with this data to see how the
Splitter reacts. You should delete the sample data before importing your
live data.
More specific instructions are included in the database, but it's very
easy to use, especially if you're familiar with FileMaker Pro.
There is no fee for using this database.

Subject: [*] The MacLocksmith 2.1.0 FAT; file-folder-disk protection
The MacLocksmith is an useful application to save your files from
indiscreet eyes. It protects your files/folders quickly by using a strong
encryption method and a password. Also it locks/unlocks disks by software
flag.
By using Special Keys you can activate some its extra ability: you can
set/unset lock bit of files, lock/unlock names and, finally, show/hide
files and folders.
The MacLocksmith works very fast and can scan your disks looking for files
to treat.
It's Internet Config and Drag Manager aware moreover it's Appearance savvy.
The MacLocksmith requires at least System 7 to run .

[snip of long and complicated method]
There is a much simpler solution. Create a folder for each user. This
folder can be anywhere on the hard disk, a network disk or even a floppy
disk that the user carries with him/her. Find the file "Eudora Settings"
that is probably located in your "Eudora folder" inside the system folder.
Copy that file in each user's folder; you can leave its name as "Eudora
settings" or, for clarity's sake, you can call it "Andrew's Eudora" or
"Susie's Eudora" etc...
For each user, double-click the user's settings file in the user's folder.
This will start Eudora and, if it's already running, will replace the
currently active settings file. Customize the settings (name, address,
etc...) and voilą! Eudora has created all the accessory files and folders
by itself. You are now free to move the users' folders, make aliases of
the settings file for easy start, and upgrade your one copy of Eudora as
often as you wish.
Moral of the story: Start Eudora by double-clicking on its icon and it
will look for its settings in the "Eudora Folder" inside your System
folder (or to another location if you hack it like Andrew Minuhin
explained). But start Eudora by double-clicking its settings file (which
can be anywhere) and you can load any settings into one Eudora.

Subject: [A] Simple compiler wanted
I would recommend CodeWarrior "Discover Programming Edition" for $79. It
will support C/C++, Pascal, & Java in 68K native. If you want full
capability (e.g. PPC & Win95/NT), the full compiler costs $450. Nice
environment, I haven't done anything with a Mac interface yet, just file
input & output + console output. Comes complete with books for each
language. You also might want to consider the Apprentice series which
includes a couple more languages (e.g. Python, Perl) and a variety of
prebuilt librairies.

Apple has a tool for its developers called the "Apple Guide Visual
Authoring Tool" which is supposed to be able to read in Windows .HLP
files and help you convert them to AppleGuide format (although I think
you need to be a registered Apple developer to get access to it).
You also might want to do a search for a product called "Guide Composer",
it may offer this capability as well.
Or you could look into the QuickHelp engine that Adobe, Macromedia and
others use that bring the Windows Help functionality to the MacOS. IMHO,
it's not an elegant solution (AppleGuide is much better...and cooler) but
it does work. I think Altura Software wrote QuickHelp.
Hope this helps,
Chris

You need to ZERO the disk space after you have deleted the trash. Two ways
I know of, I'm sure there are more:
1) Norton Speed Disk and select the option to write zeros to empty disk space.
2) Speed Doubler has a "security erase" mode.

[Q] Networkable Scanner?
I need a scanner that can be easily shared by the 24 students on my
network. The scanner is used primarily to scan color PICTs into
Photoshop. Currently one computer is connected to the scanner, and the
student using that computer has to stop working while someone does their
scanning. Not efficient. I am aware of the HP networkable scanner, but
I understand that is a grayscale PC only printer. The ideal would be a
utility like ScanShare that would put the scanner on the network for
choice in the Chooser, just like a printer. I have an old version of
that software that I never did get to work properly. Anything else out
there? ANybody using ScanShare?

If you are trying to turn off the num-lock light in MSWord 6.x, press & hold
the SHIFT key while depressing the num lock (clear) key.
The num lock key is a binary switch controlling the numerical keypad and some
