This Hyperstudio stack allows one to view some of the images and text
concerning galaxies from the Anglo-Australian Obsertvatory web site. I
obtained permission from them to compile this information into a tutorial
presentation. More of their astronomical images can be seen at their web
site at www.aao.gov.au/images.html.
The tutorial is for educational use. A worksheet is included with the
stack that can be filled out by students as they view it. Hyperstudio
Player 3.1 is needed to view the stack. The included worksheet is in two
fromats, Claris Works 4.0 and Simple Text. This entire package is
freeware and can be distributed to anyone who is interested.

This is the beta release, and my contribution to the Macintosh graphic media
community. Drop a PICT file on ArtClipper and it will be rapidly displayed in
a window. You can then copy the picture for your documents. As in Anarcho,
option click on the title bar of the window, and you can choose any PICT file
from the current directory. This makes ArtClipper a fast clip art viewer.
ArtClipper is absolutely FREE. Use it at your own risk. There shall be no
commercial distribution of ArtClipper without my express permission.

Subject: [*] Audiodeck 2.0.6.
Audiodeck is an audio CD remote player for Apple CD-ROM drives. Audiodeck
also works with non-Apple drives which are 100% compatible with Apple's
drivers. System 7 and Color QuickDraw are required for Audiodeck to run.
Why should you use it?
This is a good question since a very nice looking AppleCD Audio Player is
included with CD-ROM Setup 5.0 and later, possibly already installed on
your Macintosh. On the surface, Audiodeck 2.0 may bear a passing
resemblance to AAP with its 3-D buttons and sleek overall design. However,
a great deal of subtle and not-so-subtle features are exclusive to
Audiodeck:
* can automatically play inserted CD's,
* can force internal CD input and enable playthrough,
* plays adjacent tracks in shuffle and program mode without skipping a beat=
,
* disable or enable individual tracks in shuffle mode,
* uses the existing disc and track titles of CD Remote Programs,
* but also extends the disc information database with new categories,
* and individual, custom disc settings (i.e.. volume),
* gratuitous Balloon Help for just about everything; plus much, much more.
But remember, always "Read The Fabulous Manual" before using a software.
Enjoy,
...David

Subject: [*] BanzaiSlider (never say newton is lost!)
(newton gps navigation talking moving map slides)
Newton is not dead, just lost and bought back by Apple. Find your
own way with BanzaiSlider!
This version replaces Bonzai and Banzai4800 and the first version
of BanzaiSlider.
The old BanzaiSlider version had more of the feel of sliding the
maps as if they were huge virtual screens that you could zoom in and out of
under the newton window (see BanzaiReader). Another new feature, unlimited
zoomout with newton press pict books.
The current version of BanzaiSlider has a map turnoff button to
allow you to see ETA's (now corrected to your time zone). The zoom slider
control is placed for compatibility to older mp120 and mp130.
Compatible with Garmin II and III (set at 4800 baud and with NMEA
sentence filter) as well as Scoutmaster GPS (just set Scoutmaster's
baudrate at 4800).
Rich Drinkard, a beta tester, made some suggestions on activity
sounds and map display and so that is improved. He also requested the
unlimited zoomout. Evidentally his 28meg flashcard on a mp2100 could hold a
very large map to find his way around. I believe we are going to see bigger
than 4 meg flashcards officially supported by apple on the mp2100.
Rich Drinkard reported me experiments that tripmate does speak NMEA
sentences! So, I shall be working on a version for it!
I am working on a mp100 Garmin II III and Scoutmaster version with
limited features.

Subject: [*] caret-patch-10
"Ever lost sight of the little caret, the thin blinking vertical line used
to indicate where the next character you type in is going to show up on the
screen? If so, you might have experimented with the blinking rate to make
it more conspicuous. If that is not enough for you, this little system
extension could be helpful. It draws the caret with a line two or three
pixels wide instead of only one pixel, the system default.
This works in all fields that use the system routines for TextEdit (both
with and without styles). They are usually used in dialog fields (e.g.
search/replace), save dialogs, file names in the Finder, and text windows
in TeachText and SimpleText."
In the attachment called caretPatch10.sit (StuffIt archive, 8k, binhexed
for transfer) you'll find the two versions of the extension and the
description, a SimpleText document:
caretPatch (2 pixels) (5k)
caretPatch (3 pixels) (5k)
caretPatch 1.0 Read me (8k)
This should replace the earlier version (v0.2) found in
gui/caret-patch.hqx
It should probably called "caret-patch-10.hqx".
All three files were checked with Disinfectant 3.7.1 and showed no virus
infection. Please feel free to include these modules on any CD-ROMs you
produce.
All the best,

End desktop clutter forever! Avoid the most tedious file operations. This
utility will move, delete, shred or alias files that are dropped on it. Put
copies of it in your Apple Menu, on your launch pad, or in deep folders. Make
aliases of it on your desktop and rename them according to the desired option.
Keep a number of Valets around in convenient places. With them, you can move,
delete, and alias files quickly and easily. Desktop Valet 3.0.1 is Apple
Event aware. The Folder button accesses Valet's home directory. Despite
these improvements, it is still very small and incredibly fast. Desktop Valet

Subject: [*] Icon Machine (FAT) 1.2.1J - Japanese Version
This is the Japanese version of the Icon Machine package.
When I first started using System 7 and saw how you could customize icons
by pasting them in the Finders Get Info windows, I immediately said, Hey,
what we need is an icon editor! And the idea of Icon Machine was born, and
has been evolving ever since. Other people have made icon editors too, and
I have tried out as many as I could get my hands on (because if I found one
I liked enough it would save me a lot of trouble!) but I was never quite
satisfied. If you want a thing done right....
Icon Machine is an icon editor- it lets you customize the icons of items in
the Finder. To edit the icon of an item, just drag it onto the Icon Machine
icon in the Finder, and Icon Machine will open a window in which you can
edit the icon. When you're done, use the Save command to apply your new
icon. Icon Machine has been designed to take advantage of other great
features of the Mac OS to give you the power to make the icons you want.
Here are a few things people have said about Icon Machine:
"The Photoshop of icon editors!"
- Andrew Miller
"My initial reaction: This is cool!"
- Craig Hockenberry, author of Icon Dropper
"I think Icon Machine is tremendous."
- Brian Kelley, Apple Wizards
Icon Machine 1.2.1 features the following improvements:
A potential crashing bug related to the Other Size dialog and contextual
menus has been fixed.
Return and Enter are interpreted correctly in the Other Size dialog, and
the OK button is outlined.

Subject: [*] POLYCHEM
This is an update of the chemistry demo that provides a titration module
from a comprehensive multimedia tutorial and simulation tool. One that
helps teachers and students by providing hundreds of hours of student
activity.
The software is aimed at senior high school to junior college levels,
with an emphasis on the applied nature of chemistry. Most high schools
use it for years 11 and 12.
Research has shown that the students using the software are well
motivated and enjoy using the software. They prefer the software to
traditional types of instruction and have more have fun in chemistry.
Students are on task for a longer time and have been more motivated.
This environment can be used a significant teaching tool, not just as a
supplement. Students are empowered to take more responsibility for their
own learning and can spend time learning, not just copying down notes.
The program contains notes, computer generated interactive questions and
exam questions from a large number of chemistry topics, the demo shows a
titration section. There are also many simulations of equipment and of
chemical processes. There is also an extensive section on organic
chemistry that contains notes, interactive sections, simulations
questions and nomenclature problems. There are also chemistry based
games, demonstrations and activities. A key feature is the provision of
model answers for the computer generated questions to help student
reflection and analysis.
The text notes displayed can be modified on screen, even over a network,
and printed. The text can be enlarged using the controls for use by the
teacher on a classroom projector or to benefit students with visual
impairments. Examination questions can be added and altered, and
facilities are included so that other developers can add topics and
modules. Provided the user has write privileges to a disk, then
assignment marks can be recorded as well as user names, times and dates.
Computers required are Macintosh, 16mB RAM recommended (there is also a
Windows version). The program uses 4mB of physical ram so it may run on
8mB machines if there are few memory intensive extensions. A Mac 040
would be the minimum configuration computer, with a colour 640 x 480
screen.

Subject: [*] QIM 1.2.0; (QuickInstaller Maker) Installer builder and compres
QuickInstaller Maker (QIM) allows you to create straightforward an
installer for distributing any kind of file. You can build your own 68k,
PPC or FAT installer application in a very simple way, choosing many
features such as: compression, target processor, computer restarting,
destination folder. The Built Installer can show your own logo in its main
window as well as a scrolling styled "Read Me" text in its splash screen
and also a scrolling styled help text. Both texts may have embedded Picts.
QIM is able to build single self-extracting installers and installers using
external documents, for distributing your creations by using the media you
want.
Even if you will never create an installer, QIM will be anyway useful:
becoming the archiving application of your choice, since any single
QIMDocument (QIMD) holds compressed items without limits.
QIM can also create compressed archives and BinHex files for a more
convenient, free, world distribution. QIM package includes QIMExtractor
FAT, a freeware utility able to extract from compressed archives, BinHex
files and QIMDs: people without QIM will have the possibility to extract
from these kind of files, by using QIMExtractor. Last, but not least, QIM
can create SEA applications.
QIM is shareware, it costs less than a small utility and anyone should
afford it.
QIM requires at least System 7 and a 68030 processor to run.
The Built Installer (TBI) requires at least System 7, but runs on every
processor type.

Subject: [*] ResEdit Appearance Templates 1.0.2
The new Appearance manager introduced with MacOS 8 is programmed with a set
of new resources ('alrx', 'dlgx', 'ldes', 'tab#', 'dftb' and 'xmnu'). In
Apple's preliminary distribution of the Appearance manager programmer
documentation, a Rez file was included, which allows users of Resourcer (or
Rez code 'jockeys') to make a set of Appearance manager templates. The
Appearance Manager SDK 1.0.2 includes only a set of Resourcer templates.
ResEdit users are left out in the cold.
This package consists of a set of templates that allow editing of new
Appearance manager (up to version 1.0.2) resources with ResEdit, with a
couple of caveats. It will be of interest to developers and hackers who do
not have Resourcer, or who prefer to use ResEdit.
This package does not contain instructions on how to program the Appearance
manager, nor does it explain the data in the templates themselves. This
information can be found in the Appearance Manager 1.0.2 SDK at
The software required to use these templates is Apple's ResEdit (version
2.1.3), which can be downloaded from Apple's ftp site. It is not necessary
to have the Appearance manager in order to use the ResEdit templates.
This version does not change the templates, but includes some notes with
regard to compatibility with Appearance Manager 1.0.2.
This file should replace the previous version in

This is the Japanese version of the StuffCM package.
StuffCM is a contextual menu plugin that works with Aladdin Systems'
StuffIt Engine. It can stuff, unstuff, convert, BinHex, segment and join
files directly in the Finder through the contextual menu commands. To
install StuffCM, drag it and StuffCM Control to your System Folder (they
will be routed to their respective folders inside the System Folder) and
restart your computer.
Check out MacUpdate's review of StuffCM
(http://www.macupdate.com/reviews/adam/stuffcm.html):
"StuffCM is such a sublime addition to the Mac OS, it's a wonder that it's
not built in."
Version 1.2.1 features the following improvements:
*Uses the real Appearance Manager pop-up menus under Appearance 1.0.1 and
later.
*Button titles are no longer cut off if you use Chicago as your system font.
*Recompiled using CCMArea 1.3.2, fixing some contextual menu problems.
*No longer displays error alerts in applications like URL Manager Pro and
Internet Explorer.

Subject: [I] Great service from Panasonic
We hear so many stories of problems. How about a positive experience. Maybe this
is what is to be expected with this level of product, but I rarely have such
good luck.
Last summer my wife, realizing the way to my heart is through a computer, bought
a Panasonic Panasync 21" monitor for my birthday. Last week through
circumstances which (ahem) "may" have been my son's fault, it died.
I called Panasonic, and they took all my information (still under warranty). The
next day, they called and arranged to _come to my house_ to do a swap, no
questions asked. (I live in a town that takes an extra day from places like
MacConnection because the overnight companies "don't normally go out that far.")
The next business day, they came, made the swap, helped me set up and verify the
new monitor, and left; no charge. A disaster quickly and happily fixed. I still
cannot believe it was that easy.
I have no connection to Panasonic other than customer, but I'd recommend you
give them your business.

I have a Quadra 800, and just upgraded to System 8.1. It works
quite well, except that in upgrading, I lost my Trash Can. I have tried
cleaning up my desktop, etc., to no avail. Right now, I am using the CMM
to erase stuff - but that gets old after a while. Any suggestions would be

Another problem I have is with the cursor - it changes color when I
go into a text area (MS Word, Eudora, SimpleText) etc. It changes to a
light yellow that almost matches the white background making it almost
impossible to see where I am editing. Again, any suggestions would be
welcome.

Subject: [q]Word Graphics Filter Can't Be Found
Hello All,
This question may be moot for a number of people since Office '98 is imminent,
but I'm not holding my breath for my company to spring for it, so I need to
find out if there is any solution for me. My problem is that the filter that
converts from MS Windows-based Word file graphics to Mac (v. 6.0.1) is not
working and nothing I do seems to have any effect. Whenever I encounter an in-
line graphic generated in the Windows-based document, I get the message, "Word
cannot find the graphics filter, or there is not enough memory to load it.
(Help) ((Okay))" I'm not exactly sure of the timing, but it could have started
when I installed System 8.1, since one file that converted fine at the
beginning of January now causes problems. BTW, it is claimed to be a Word 4
document, nothing fancy. On the chance that upgrading the system broke a
link, I uninstalled and reinstalled the entire Office 4.21 package & upgrades,
to no avail. Restarting with extensions off or with System 8.1 only extensions
and the Microsoft dialog library (without which Word won't open) yield the
same result. I also tried the memory angle, but even a 20 MB partition does no
good. The filters are in the Word Extensions folder, as they have always been.
Has anyone else encountered this problem, and has anyone figured out a work-
around? Thanks.

Subject: Apple ColorSync 20 Display
If anyone has any experience with the ColorSync 20"/850 display monitor
from Apple, I'd be most greatful if they'd share their experiences with
me at bnordby@athena.valpo.edu. I have always been extremely pleased
with Apple's Sony Trinitron monitors, but I'd like to hear some
real-world reactions to the following:
1. Does the monitor display 1600x1200 resultions in enough clarity to
easily read text on, say, a web page or a Pagemaker/Xpress document (12pt
Times)?
2. Does the monitor offer a focus control (it's not available in the
software control, so I'm hoping there's a manual control for it)?
3. Are the speakers cheap and tinny-sounding, or do they offer good,
full-range sound (I've seen the specs, but when it comes to speakers I
have learned to always try them out personally).
4. Is the screen geometry/image quality good at high resolutions? I was
playing with a ColorSync 17" display at CompUSA and noticed that there
was a wee bit of horizontal convergence out of sync (blue); when I tried
adjusting it, I discovered that it was already adjusted as far as it
would go in that direction. So there was a slight blue fringe on all the
text at 1280x1024-- not enough to easily be noticed, but annoying to
perfectionists like me.
Unfortunately, I simply cannot find any ColorSync 20" to play with, with
or without speakers. And the local CompUSA only had a 17" without
speakers. If you have experience with the 20, please drop me an email
and let me know! THANK YOU ;)

Subject: Norton Disk Editor Problems
I have found problems with the 3.5.1 and 3.2.1 versions of Symantec's
Norton Disk Editor in the Norton Utilities for Macintosh, which I wish to
share with others who are interested in using that utility.
PROBLEM #1: In the regular "Hex View" display of a disk sector, if
absolute-sector scrolling is used to move from a sector of one file to
sectors of the opposite fork of either that file or of other files, the
fork designation in "owning file:" becomes incorrect - it is locked onto
that of the original fork. In other words, you can be misinformed as to
the fork of a file's sector if you use absolute-sector scrolling to arrive
there.
PROBLEM #2: Again in hex view displays of sectors, if the Read Sector
command (cmd-R) is used to move, as before, from a sector of one file to
sectors of the opposite fork of either that file or of other files, the
displayed fork length -- the hex number following the word "of" -- is given
for the wrong fork of the destination file. At the moment I have the
impossibility "$2247 of $C3" displaying on my NDE after having used its
Read Sector command. Thus, file fork length numbers cannot be trusted
after a Read Sector command.
PROBLEM #3: For 3.5.1 only, if one attempts to use the "Utilities" Menu of
the Norton Utilities application, v. 3.5.1, in order to launch Norton Disk
Editor, it calls up (at least on my system) the Floppier utility, v. 3.2.1,
which is also on my disk, instead of the Disk Editor. Fortunately, NDE is
present as a separate application in the 3.x versions.
I did complain about the first two of these problems to Symantec,
beginning with a letter five months ago (which yielded only a form letter
in response,) and followed by complaints in October to their online
technical support. However, I have no great confidence that they will have
repaired these defects in NDE even yet. I have heard no indication that
versions 3.5.2 or 3.5.3 have such a fix. Perhaps someone who has the use
of one of these latter versions can tell me whether this is so or not.
None of these problems were present in the much older version 2.0 which
I purchased many years ago. Though there has been a number of far worse
difficulties surfacing with Norton Utilities throughout recent years, the
above problems are symptomatic of a general malaise which has been apparent
in the NUM project under Symantec's stewardship. Peter Norton, what have
they done to your fine creation?

Subject: Scanner Problems
Ever since I installed a Umax 600S Scanner on my Mac Quadra 610,
36mb RAM, (1st in the SCSI chain...then in order: Zip Drive, Ext Hard
Drive, CD-ROM), I have been having problems with freezes, crashes,
bombs, blinking question mark disks at startup, etc. Umax tech support
has been completely NONEXISTENT!
I've tried:
1.Extensions on & off
2.Rearranging the SCSI chain
3.Disconnecting all other SCSI devices
4.Disk First Aid, Rebuild desktop, Zap PRAM
5.Trashing and reinstalling scanner software 4-5 times
a. Vistascan 2.4 (Umax scanner driver)
b. Pagemanager
c. Photodeluxe 1.1 & 2.0 (seperately)
6. Clean re-install of system software (7.5.5) - TWICE
7.Re-installed Global Village software many times, because after
almost every crash a warning box would come up saying "...the GV
telephone engine is not installed.." even though it was right there in
my system folder. ( Could GV be a cause, or merely a victim)
After the latest crash, I re-installed (clean) the system software,
re-installed the above applications, tried a scan in Photodeluxe, which
hung. I force quit it and tried the text scan in Pagemanager, which
printed out with a black line on the left side. I installed about seven
3rd party control Panels, re-started and froze. Restarted again with
extensions off to a blinking question mark.
I trashed the finder preferences and reinstalled a fresh System file and
Finder and re-started OK with ext off. I trashed The three scanning
programs above, restarted with extensions on, re-installed all 3rd party
control panels and extensions, replaced and repaired programs ( like PPP
and Navigator) that wouldn't function properly, got on the net and CRIED
FOR HELP!
My computer seems stable now. All the SCSI devices are hooked up in
the above mentioned order and turned on. No problems. I'd like to use
my new scanner and printer but I'm afraid to use the scanner software. I
downloaded a different scanner driver for the Umax from Silverfast, but
it was more like Lead-slow. It took 6 minutes to scan what should have
taken 20 seconds.
I tried testing for extension conflicts, and had some of the same
problems with extensions off. It seems like the PROGRAMS are
conflicting and not the extensions. Is that possible? What's the
solution for that?
How to use my scanner without crashing/corrupting every thing? That is
the question. I've had a rough week. Any suggestions would be greatly
appreciated.

Subject: Setting AppleScript for certain times
We are working on a project here to script some repetitive tasks
involving FileMaker databases, using AppleScript and FileMaker's
ScriptMaker. Currently we have a script which does what we want it to, but
has to be started manually.
We would like to find some way of having this script run at a given
time (preferably with the option of at a given time each day, or each
week.) I have suggested one of the available "cron" utilities, but he said
he would prefer something more reliable, preferably Apple-branded and
preferably within AppleScript itself. In an excellent and reliable
handbook for AppleScript, I found an example of a script which stays in the
background and activates its payload at a preset time; despite that this is
all within AppleScript, he is not happy with this because the script would
have to be in the background continuously throughout the computer's
operation.
Can anyone comment on the reliability of the various "cron"
packages? Can anyone comment on the relative merits of using a cron
utility versus trying to build our own timed functionality into an
AppleScript?

Hi,
First of all, congrats on making the 'intelligent' choice in what is a
fantastic and powerful writing tool. Once you become addicted to it's
unique features, you will not turn back.
Dictionaries are one of the few areas that I am not intimately familiar
with in Nisus Writer, so I'm not going to waste your time by offering a
guess on the best way to do this.
Instead, I strongly urge you to subscribe to the nisus discussion list and
post your question there. This list is very enthusiastic and helpful, with
a lot of very bright folks active on it, including numerous Nisus personnel
(including the president who is extremely active in answer posts and
helping solve problems right on the list). The list traffic is right
around 5-10 messages a day, so is pretty easy to manage, yet it also very
consistently active, so it doesn't disappear for weeks at a time -
generally there is always a useful and informative discussion going on.
Believe me, if you want to get the most out of Nisus Writer, this is THE
discussion group to be subscribed to.
To subscribe, send an email to: listserv@dartmouth.edu with the message
contents:
subscribe nisus
You will then recieve instructions from the listserv on how to post
messages, how to change your subscription options (such as to recieve
copies of your own post or not, whether to recieve messages in digest form
or not and so on). KEEP a copy of this instructional message around
somewhere as it also includes instructions on unsubscribe'ing, should you
need to later.
Also, another excellent source of information on using Nisus Writer to it's
fullest, especially because it makes clear at the outset what is different
(both good and bad) about Nisus Writer from using other popular word
processors such as MS Word, is the book "The Nisus Way" by Joe Kissell,
published by MIS:Press. This book was written with version 4.1 in mind,
but most (95%) of the same basic concepts and strategies are still valid
with the current version (5.1.1). Disclaimer: although I helped with
technical editing of this book, I recieve no royalties. It is simply a
great 3rd party software book that is invaluable for Nisus Writer users.
