thanx to everyone who tried to help me solve the broken desktop.
it _seems_ that the real culprit may have been some disk damage that
subsequently caused some system damage. Fixing the disk and then installing
a new system folder seems to have solved all the problems.
for those that asked me why I still use sys 7.1 - I like it! Till 8 I had
not seen _any_ reason to switch. Everything that was added to 7.5 or 7.6
that was not a memory hog was available to us lowly 7.1 users. Without
doing all that beta testing! Which is why I still have not bought 8. when
i'm convinced that it's no longer beta - i'll consider it. (of course I
only left 6 when I bought the centris and could not start up with 6 at
all.) generally I find 7.1 to be as stable as anything out there. So why
switch? :) (contextual menus might get me though)
I knew it was not a word virus (which seems redundant to me anyway) as I do
my part to fight bloat. I will not buy a word processor that needs user
configuarble menus!! (i would rather stick with golden oldies like acta,
writenow etc... and when I really need to control the page layout i'll use
a page layout program.)
and writenow works fine on system 7.1. in fact I would quickly nominate
writenow for the best mac ever award.

I wholeheartedly suggest the 8.0 upgrade (haven't had time to do 8.1 yet).
I find it more stable and several of the new features (click-and-a-half to
burrow into folders, ctrl-click to get contextural menus) I find really
useful. I stuck with 7.1 on my home computer because I didn't think 7.5+
added anything compelling for me (I used 7.6 at the office) but 8.0 has won
me over.
I have a Performa 6115 with 24MB RAM and a 350 MB HD.
I use it at home and most my time is spent on the internet between
browsing, newsgroups, info-gathering and email.

i'm trying to figure out how to segment files for a mac (.sit, sea,
.hqx) on a win 95 or win NT machine to transport to my home mac PPC. The
files are too big for a floppy so i want to be able to segment then on a
windose machine and then put them back together on a mac.

Just zip them to multiple floppies on the Windows machine and use ZipIt (in
the Info-Mac archive) to unzip it on the Mac.

Subject: a Problem, good luck.
The infamous Apple Bar problem (we see only the out line of the apple
menu box.) occurs after installing Netscape or running Norton
Utilities(on some occasions, it has also happened just on it own.). On
several other occasions, the problem has occurred after installing
First Class Client. My theory is that the installers themselves make
some sort of modification to the system and/or the finder file (One
these computers we are running a program called FoolProof, to prevent
students from get to places were they should not go.). We have tried
everything recommended, (trashing the finder preferences, etc.) The
only thing that works is re-installing the system from disk or CD (and
even that does not work.). The first time you drag the mouse onto the
Apple bar and the context menus, it appears fine. However, when you go
to do it again, all of the Apple menu bar items have disappeared
including the context menus. As you drag the mouse over the items in
the Apple Bar and the context menus, the icons reappear however only
temporarily( this would not be so bad if the control panels menu would
still scroll.). When you exit the Apple Bar, the icons disappear again
when you go to open it again.

I am not sure if this is what you do - but do you have an alias which
you double-click pointing to a harddrive with the "mommie's" name?
If so, just throw the alias awaz (and create a new one from the renamed
disk, if you like), and everything should be fine (I hope).

Word95 and Word6 share the same file format (surprise!). You should
use MacLink Plus to convert to Word 5.1/Mac. Comes free with system
software since about 7.5 or 7.6. System 8.1 has MacLink Plus 9.0.2
bundled, but the latest version is 9.7 from DataViz. You can get an
upgrade from them - the upgrade looks whether you have installed an
earlier version, no matter whether you bought it separately or it
was bundled with system software.
I think the MacLink Plus version which comes with earlier system
software (7.6.x) can translate Word6; if you do not bother doing a
"two-step-translation" for files in Word97 format, you can first
translate them to Word6 using Microsoft's utility and in a second
step to Word 5.1 using MacLink Plus.

MacAddict's latest CD has a couple of sources: Extension Overload 2.5 and
The InformInit 1.3 (NOT an init, despite its name), both shareware, and
both likely to be available on Info-Mac archives. Both are self-contained

hi again,
every have one of those weeks.
just got a used laserwriter pro 630 (with less than 300 pages on the engine).
two questions -
1. i'm getting three gray lines down the entire length of every sheet I
print (the widest is about 1.5 inch, the other 2 are less than an inch) I
seem to remember from an old printer that this may be a sign that I need a
new toner cartridge. Considering that there seem to be only 300 prints that
seems a bit weird - on the other hand the printer has been moved around a
bunch and the cartridge has probably seen lots of light - packing and
unpacking.
so should I just get a new cartridge, or is something else wrong?
2. if (and hopefully when) I need a new cartridge, I heard a rumor that the
630 takes the same toner as the hp laserjet4 and that this cartridge is
both easier to get and cheaper - any comments, experience?

Dear Peter,
My experience with MacOS 8.1 has been splendid. I would certianly shell
out the few $$ and get the MacOS 8.1 CD (Not the download version on
Apple's page as it seems riddled with bugs). MacOS 8 has been as solid as
a hammer and OT 1.3 (only with MacOS 8.1) is highly stable and efficient in
my opinion. You might want to get more ram, although, I don't think you'll
run into any serious problems with 24MB. Regarding the browser, there's
nothing better than Nav. 4.04 out there. Don't even waste time with IE.
You can get the Standalone version of Navigator 4.04.1

Subject: Problems copying fonts / ghost fonts
Hello Mac Users,
I've just recently saw the article titled "Stabilizing your System" from
The MacAuthority July 1997 Vol 6 No. 7. On the subject of fonts, the
article points out that....
"The most common cause of font problems is copying many fonts at once,
which can result in the Finder copying the font incorreclty and creating
what's called a ghost font." The article also mentions that ghost fonts
can cause a font to display correctly on screen but prints in a different
font. Ghost fonts may cause the font to display on the screen as a
different font.
Could someone explain what causes these ghost fonts? Which system
software version(s) does it happen in? Has anyone in this list
experienced ghost fonts? How many fonts can you copy at one time and not
create ghost fonts? I mean what's the best way to prevent them? And if I
have created ghost fonts during a copy how can I tell that they are there?
If I copy a folder containing fonts and then do get info on the original
and the copy and I see that the "byte" count is the same for both the
original and the copy can I assume that I have not created ghost fonts in
the copy? In other words, when ghost fonts are created in the copy will
the get info show different number of bytes for the copied folder than the
original?

I have a problem:
Recently I upgraded the Mac's at my work to system 8 (a 7100/66, a 6100/60,
a 7500/100). The problem is I cannot upgrade the system on a 7100/80AV!
When I run the Installer, it says: Cannot run in this machine.
I cannot run the system from CD too!
Please help me! My reputation here is getting down :->

a way to convert my old dictionaries to Nisus' format. Do I have to open
them as textfiles and confirm every word, or what should I do?
