Roberts Sarasota, Florida ====================== In response to: Subject: [Q] Clear memory cache in Netscape Date: Sun, 17 Oct 1999 03:26:44 +0000 From: Marlon Deason I have used Netscape for years an have honed my settings down to exactly how I want them. However, since upgrading to Mac OS 8 a few years back, I find that I rarely have to shut down my computer. Since I have a PowerBook, I often just close the lid and let the system disconnect my network/PPP connection and put the system to sleep. Upon waking the computer, I simply reconnect to the Internet and continue on my way. I have long ago discovered that the harddrive in my machine is slower than RAM. So I set Netscape to run with no files being saved to the HD cache (ie. HD:System Folder:Preferences:Netscape=83:Cache). Rather, I set Netscape to the maximum RAM usage (under the get info comments) and let it store all of the files downloaded from the Internet internally. This works great, up to a point. At some point, usually after several days of surfing, Netscape will complain that it is out of memory. I usually cannot load any further pages into Netscape until I quit and restart. I already know how to clear the HD cache for Netscape, what I would like to be able to do is clear the internal RAM cache which is stored in the running application. If I could delete the cache while Netscape is still running, I could get some marathon sessions on the net. The only info I have to go on is that there is an obscure command which lets you view files stored in the internal (RAM) cache. Something like about:internal cache (?) The next reboot all I got was a flashing busy cursor to pointer at the Apple menu in an endless loop. So I turned it off, and read the readme that came with it. Sure enough it states QuicKeys has certain keystrokes that duplicate its function and could cause a conflict. That disclaimer should be on their website, and their advertisements to the registered people of previous software. Not in the readme. Now that I've purchased the product not knowing it has the conflict until after I purchased it I am asking for a refund....we'll see if that happens. Another problem I found is that GoMac doesn't like Stuffit Deluxe 4.5's extensions, or for that matter Microsoft Excel 5.0. In the former a lot of programs cause the Finder to quit unexpectedly, and the latter Microsoft Excel will not load if the toolbar is visible. I am aware there are upgrades, but these are too costly at the present time. I am beginning to think Power On software needs to do more beta-testing before releasing their products to the general public. I will endeavor to read all readmes now before installing the software if it is at all possible. So buyer beware....all is not what it seams, and do read those readmes. They aren't meant to be placeholders on your hard drive for no reason. I'm afraid it is just not possible to add FireWire to your iMac. The first two varriations of iMac (rev. A and B) have an undocumented port (mezzanine) which was intended for a DV/DVD upgrade which Apple never produced. The slot was removed from the next two varriations (C and D). I didn't know what it was when I first got it and had misplaced it--but now it's found, and working. It's important to note that most video monitors won't show anything until you reset the resolution to 640x480. If you leave your PB set at the default 1024x768, which is what you do when driving a data projector, it won't work. The adapter is model "7-pin SVideo-RCA," and does not use a standard S-video connector: there are seven pins instead of four. VideoWare now has replacements of this rare and crucial beast for sale for $26.99. This is the only place I've found that knows about it and can actually supply it. See .
