No. is is not a condition. There is a jumper that controls the spin up at power on time but that was already in place. The problem turned out to be that the driver was not configured to autoboot. The disk was being picked up by the control panel SCSI-Probe which mounted the disk once the system was up and running. Now with the driver configures to Autoboot and Bootable it works fine. I looked into my 8.5.1 System Folder and found both Apple Enet and Ethernet (Built-In) extensions. Huh? I went to the font of all such knowledge, the excellent shareware Informinit. This is what informinit says about Apple Enet. >Apple Enet 10/100D extension: provides support under Mac OS 8.1 for the >10/100 >Ethernet PC card supplied with the PowerMacintosh G3 Server. Right. My 7300/180 is really a G3 Server with a 10/100 Ethernet PC card. I wish. I, for one, have to wonder what the Apple installer was thinking when it put that extension in my System Folder. I flushed that puppy to no detriment. I also wonder about an extension the Apple installer put on my PB5300cs that killed networking from a boot disk through my Dayna PC Card. But that's another snarl. In my case, having "Apple Enet" didn't do any damage that I noticed. Removing it changed nothing that I care about. But apparently it really does a number on some of your machines. I've just signed up for Internet access by cable with France Telecom, the national phone service here (I'm in Bordeaux). No problem, except that I was told to get an Ethernet card with a RJ-45 connection. No problem, except that I'm using a PowerBook 180 which doesn't have an Ethernet port. No problem, I can use the SCSI port for the connection; Asant=E9 (and probably others) make slotless Ethernet controllers, although none of them are available here in France. No problem, I can order one from one of the mail-order houses in the States. Here's the problem: what do I order? Since this will be a long-distance affair, I want to be sure that I'm getting exactly what I need since exchanges will be costly and complicated. Naturally, salespeople at the local Mac shops can't help me since they have no experience of material that isn't on the French market; the technicians at France Telecom can't help me, since they are equally clueless. The fact that I'm using a Powerbook doesn't necessarily mean that I'll be plugging the device directly into the HDI-30 port--it'll be going into the back of a Zip 250 drive that is already connected to the PowerBook's SCSI port, so I'll be using a 25 Pin D-Sub connection (this means that the Ethernet device will have to be able to be terminated). The ADB port is available. I'm not entirely sure about the sort of network connection France Telecom is providing (although they did indicate that it would be a 10BaseT connection). My main concerns are: 1) whatever I get will be suitable for use with my PowerBook 180 (68030 microprocessor), and 2) that the device will take whatever connector France Telecom is likely to use to have at the end of their cable (RJ-45?). Anyone have any ideas of what material would be best suited for my needs? Any timely help will be greatly appreciated, as the technician will be coming to install the cable modem on February 16 and I'll need a little time to get whatever material over here from the States. Bowersox wrote: > Does anyone know of a spell checker that can be downloaded or what > ever to use with Microsoft outlook express? Here is a nearly universal, inexpensive method; Keep your favorite word processor open with a blank document while you are typing into any program which does not have a spell checker (i.e., email, news, etc.). Do a quick copy-paste from that program to the word processor, check spelling, and copy-paste back to the other program (replacing the original, un-corrected text). Or, save a step, by doing the original typing via the word processor, then copy to the email program. Once you get used to that, it does not use much extra time. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Jan 1999 08:34:48 -0400 From: Mod Dog Internet Services Subject: system sound turning itself off I'm running system 8.0 on a G3 with an Applevision 750 monitor. About 2 or 3 times a week, the system sound will somehow turn itself off. In the Monitors and Sound control panel, sometimes the system volume will have been turned all the way down, and sometimes it's still set properly, but regardless the volume won't play until I restart. In addition, occasionally the monitor will flash or flicker like a strong electric charge just ran through it, but continue to operate ok. I've checked all the cables and they appear to be connected just fine. Is this an indication that something really bad might happen, or should I not be too worried about this? Thank you.
