Tim, if you can't get it, try Snitch which does the same things. It's

Subject: (A) SCSI Question
Thanks to all the folks who responded to my question, Re: connecting an
external SCSI device to the internal (Fast SCSI) SCSI bus of my 9600.
It is possible, but no ready made cable is available that I have found.
However, for under $15 you can buy the connectors and make one yourself.
It's very simple. As to the practicality of doing this; it's probably not
worth it for connecting a CD-R. Mine is a 4X recorder and works at 4X speed
connected to the external bus (SCSI 1). It might be beneficial for an
external Fast SCSI hard drive (like a SyJet, etc), but I don't have one and
have not tried this. Thanks again for your comments.

Dear Digest readers,
Is anyone aware of a freeware/shareware that will send a ping down the line
to a server,
and return the bits per second up stream and downstream one receives? This
software should be
independant of the dialer used, and be compatible with OpenTransport. I am
wondering if my Cable internet provider is giving me all the speed I should
be getting. I looked at Peter Lewis's OT Watcher and couldn't find a place
to issue a ping from. Any others?
Thank you.

Subject: (Q) screen redraw errors on a G3
I just bought a new Desktop G3 266 mhz model with a ATI Rage graphics
accelerator chip. It was already formatted with HFS+ and running System 8.1
when I got it. I formatted a Coniglio 3 GB hard drive with HFS+ and
connected it to it.
I've experienced several screen redraw errors, both in the Finder and in a
few applications (Bryce & Netscape). When this error occurred in Bryce, I
got a dialog box announcing it that it had experienced a redraw error and
couldn't perform the desired operation. In Netscape, when I filled in a
form online, the text I typed appeared several inches away from the box I
typed it into. In the finder, portions of just closed windows remained on
the screen until I covered them up with another active window and then
closed it. I've also noticed that the tabs on the pop-up folders at the
bottom of the screen often show different looking type on the tabs (at the
right, the font appears thinner and on the left it appears bolder).
Does anyone know why this is happening? Is it related to the accelarator
chip, HFS+ or System 8.1?
Other details:
The computer has 96 MB of RAM. The disk cache is set at 3072k and virtual
memory is on using 1 MB of VM (simply because it is recommended). I'm not
running any RAM doubling software or functionality or cosmetic extensions
(only Apple extenstions and printer and scanner drivers). This model also
has a built-in Zip drive.
Thanks for any input.

Dear Digest readers,
One of the numerous hit counter people isn't returning my calls for help.
As some people
may have heard of http://www.hitbox.com here, I thought perhaps I could ask
if somebody else knows of a better way to contact their tech support office.
I have e-mailed the address on their web page with no response, and left a
phone message at their contact site. Ever since the beginning of last week
their onsite statistics web page has inaccurately ranked me as zeroth in
ranking, even though I am in a category where my average number of hits
would have ranked me as 300th out of a possible 1000. Any idea how to
contact these people to get it fixed? Or does somebody know of a newsgroup
where I can report this, and probably get a better response?
Thank you.

Subject: [A] Best WWW browser for 68k Mac
I have been innundated with the results of many people's experiences. Many
thanks to you all.
It appears that Netscape is more popular than Microsoft Internet Explorer.
The majority vote went to Netscape version 2.02. It is pretty stable and
uses about 5MB RAM. There is also a version of Netscape 4 without news or
email built in which is more memory efficient than the full version 4,
requiring 8MB. I was warned off Netscape 3.01, although IE 3.01 is said to
be good. On a PowerMac with loadsa RAM, IE 4.01 is the bee's knees...
MacWeb is very old and doesn't even support inline JPEG images.
Coming soon to the Mac (2 months? I suspect longer from what I have read on
their web site) is Opera, a browser already available for MS Windows, which
apparently adheres strictly to the HTML standard, fits on a single floppy,
and is lightning fast. I shall certainly be looking at this one. The PC
version has had rave reviews. It is not free like the others, but is said
to be well worth the money.

Are you suggesting getting a CD-RW drive, but using CD-R media where
there's a playback-compatibility concern?
I'd appreciate the list's experienced advise on another matter. I'm
considering some sort of CD for LocalTalk network backup. I understand
LocalTalk is too slow and would cause data underruns, ruining any CD-R.
One alternative is to back up to another HD, then copy the backup file to
the CD-R.
Another possibility is a CD-RW. However, I'm not clear how it would handle
the slow-network problem: would it toast the CD-RW (probably not), just
waste a track occasionally (likely), or write over any such temporary
errors (too good to hope for)?
And is the media price difference of 10x ($20 as opposed to $2) worth it?!
Cheers,

Downgrading or upgrading the Acrobat Reader did not help. Buying a
PostScript level 2 printer is no option for me. The Adobe web pages were no
help either.
Downgrading was in fact the solution, not the Acrobat Reader has to be
downgraded, but the Adobe Type Manager. I downgraded ATM until I found a
version that worked with Acrobat Reader 3.0 and my venerable printer: ATM
vs. 3.6.

The two best methods for me are:
1. cron -- http://gargravarr.cc.utexas.edu/
"Cron is a program that launches other programs (including AppleScript
applets) at preset times. This scheduling of program launches can be as
simple as =B3run this program every hour=B2 or =B3run this program at noon
every day,=B2 or as sophisticated as =B3run this program every third minute
during the four o=B9clock hour on the first Monday of every month.=B2 It is
based directly on the cron d=E6mon in the BSD Unix operating system (there
is no common code at any level, however), and has been in widespread use
on the Macintosh since shortly after System 7.0 was released in 1991."
2. T-Minus Ten -- available from info-mac servers
T-Minus Ten executes your AppleScript from the background (and not as a
stand-alone application).
For both method you may need Okey Dokey Pro (look on info-mac servers).
Okey Dokey Pro presses the default button in modal dialogs after a time
limit.

There is Cron among the shareware or freeware group, and if you have Script
Debugger {commercial} there is Scheduler included, and Scheduler
{commercial} is available separately as I recall.

I certainly am no expert in this matter but I have learned, in talking to
people who do this as a profession, that the appropriate scanning
resolution depends on what you want to do with the picture after you have
scanned it. If you simply plan to use it in a web site or anywhere else
where the output medium is a computer screen, anything much higher than 72
dpi is probably wasted because of the resolution of most screens. For
printer output probably 300 dpi is max because that is the max resolution
of many printers. Even then the image will be pretty big and printing it
will take quie a while becuse of the large amount of data to pass to the
printer. For general purposes I usually use 200 dpi for both photos and
line drawing stuff and find it to be generally satisfactory. I recently
bought Photo Vista (for stitching a series of photos into a panoramic view)
and found that, although it will handle photos at 200 dpi, you have to be
pretty patient so for those cases I have been trying 150 dpi. I hope this
is of some help to you.

Subject: [Q] AppleShare over TCP/IP?
Thanks to a wonderful little piece of software called DAVE, I am sitting at
home with shares volumes from my work-Mac mounted on my desktop.
I use DAVE at work to mount PC volumes (it's a cross-platform workspace),
and it did not at first occur to me to use DAVE to connect one Mac with
another. Last night I was trying to accomplish this feat using AppleShare,
clicking "Server IP Address", and typing in my TCP/IP address from work, to
no avail. DAVE, however, works fine. (won't let me mount anyone else's
shared Mac volumes 'cuz I'm the only one running DAVE, but I can mount my
own, plus all the PC volumes I want).
Got me wondering, though...OK, so I gather that AppleShare such as it ships
with MacOS 8.1 does not function over TCP/IP. Am I remembering things that
did not actually occur, or did I genuinely read at some point a press
release concerning how some forthcoming version of AppleShare is going to
be TCP/IP native?
Or is this a feature of "AppleShare IP", whatever that might be? Is that
perhaps to the built-in version of AppleShare what QuickTime Pro is to the
free version or something like that?
(I also note that OS 8.x comes with bits and pieces of Apple Remote Access,
but they seem to be "client" pieces and the implication would seem to be
that one needs the presumably commmercial "server" pieces on the remote
machine in order to mount volumes using ARA client...??)

I have a Quadra 610 and I have found that Explorer is the best. Personally
I use, 4.01 and if that doesn't satisfy, you might try IE 3.01.
MacWeb is small, but hasn't been updated in years and doesn't support JPEG
inline and so you need to use an external helper like JPEGView, though it
does work. :-}
I don't know if it supports Eudora as a helper, probably so.
Re: older versions of Netscape, I have Netscape Navigator 3.01 and it is a
hog and will not support Eudora unless you hack its Prefs with ResEdit or
use an AppleScript that hacks them for you. I have never used any of the
Navigator versions previous to 3.01, but I would think they might have the
same problem with Eudora and I do understand that they have bugs, etc.
Sorry that I am not more encouraging. The best I can think of is get a 3.01
version of IE and run that.

I did a couple of tests and found that NN 4.04 loaded pages
over twice as fast as IE 4.01. And IE 4.01 is supposed to
be a lot faster than 4.0.
MacWeb is dead. I liked it, but it simply is unable to
handle far too many pages on the web today. Not even
complicated ones.
Opera Software (www.operasoftware.com) recently announced
that they have signed a contract for porting their Opera

high speed and small size. For a review, see

I have no idea how long the port will take. Opera will cost
$35, but I plan to be first in line with my money when it's

Wow! That IS a stumper! This the first Mac file I have ever not been
able to find through www.filez.com (an otherwise killer app search
engine).
But next down the line in calibre is www.macdownload.com which turned
up:
The Informinit, a database of all know extensions, which does list it.
That might give you more to go on.
Also from the same search I turned up:
FileBuddy, a droplet enabled app which gives you an expanded get info
box for files which you drag on to it.
Snitch, a control panel which permently expands your get info windows
(sounds sort of like what you are looking for).
Good Luck

I have wondered that myself. Apple has something called the Human
Interface Guidrlines that says how things should look on the Mac. I
don't think that get get too specific and it is only a guideline so not
everyone follows it.
What I really loose sleep over though is, who's mouth is featured on the
Macintalk extension? My wife says it is Drew Barrymore. I'm not sure,
but wouldn't Drew make a great Macintalk voice?

GMI was by Scott Fenton and is GREAT! Scott now has a version for

Don't know about "Get More Info", you might try Snitch. I understand it

I like to use FileTyper and its FileTyper Menu, so I also would advise you

Well, I've had similar problem with my Zip drive that I bought a few years
ago (when they were nearly twice what they are now). I read somewhere that
there is a solution that may work. It's called "resetting the drive" or
something like that. I haven't had any troubles on that drive since I tried
this.
What you do is hold down the eject button while restarting the machine (it
may be turning the drive on, i can't remember but if the first dosn't work,
try the second). From memory, this resets the drive's internal stuff and
makes it work better or something.
If needed I can try and find the original article. Please email me with your
results.

Dear Macophiles,
I have used Word 5.1a very happily for over 5 years now, and find that
it simply WILL NOT launch when I have Kaleidoscope loaded. It starts
the welcome to Word box and then quits with an error 1 or 2.
I tried trashing my prefs; it asked me to locate the Word Commands
folder & then did the usual death thing.
This is rather disappointing! It really doesn't seem to be an extension
conflict, I've tried loading just KS & no luck....
Anyone got any ideas ??

Hi Phil:
It certainly did come with Symantec's Norton Utilities (commercial
software) as a Desk accessory (not an application) in their 2x versions
to 3.5. Last version it was included in was 3.5. After that they dropped
KF and some other neat and usefull stuff, like Fastback and came out with
Fileguard, an Improved Filesaver, better Speed Disk and some other stuff.
I run with a Powermac 7100/80 and OS 8.0. Keyfinder still works fine as
needed. After seeing your post, I just tested it and it's still working
just dandy. Sits in the Apple Menu Items folder therefore accessed from
the Apple menu any time needed.
For freeware, or is it shareware, you may want to look for Pop Char. Sort
of like a handy dandy popup menu, that lets you drop in special
characters in your document on the fly. I never used it, so I may be a
little off in it's description, but lots of others have and could fill
you in more about it, also if it works in OS 8.0 and 8.1.
Perhaps this info would be helpful to you.

Check out the Macintosh E-Mail Resource Page(MERP)
Besides having information for all the Mac email clients available in one
place, you can find out all about Outlook Express, Claris Emailer and
EmailTools. We will soon add a Eudora section too.
The FAQs on Claris Emailer haven=B9t been updated in quite a while so this
is the only place to get the latest info. There are also tutorials to
help get folks started.
We welcome any contributions and suggestions for improvement.
Here's the official announcement:
This announcement is from:

We are pleased to announce the launch of the Macintosh E-mail Resource
Page
(MERP). There are many great E-mail clients available for Macintosh
users, and this information is spread out on the World Wide Web. This
page is here to serve as a starting point for everything Macintosh and
E-mail.
The MERP is designed for new users shopping around for a new e-mail
client, or for current users that are looking for valuable information
about their current E-mail applications. Links to those resources are
categorized below. As time goes on we will continue to update this page
with new and relevant information. However, what we will not do is
provide redundant information to you. The various "Unofficial" sites
about Eudora, Outlook Express, Mailsmith, and Emailer have a great deal
of information related to those applications.
There is a lot of information about e-mail clients that is universal.
There are also many shareware and commercial products that function with
all the e-mail clients available. Most of the links on this site point to
external sites and are in no way associated with the Macintosh E-mail
Resource Page. Links that point to pages that are hosted by the MERP are
indicated. Please feel free to send in feedback about this site and I
hope you will find it a valuable resource.

Help! My Power Macintosh 6500/250 occasionally develops a tic that goes
like this:
I select "Shut down." The Mac seemingly re-opens the Finder, cycling
from a blank desktop back to a full, ready-to-go Finder. The only way I
can shut down is to cut power. Sometimes I've been able to short-circuit
this loop by selecting "Sleep," waking up the computer, then selecting
"Shut down," however this doesn't always work. I'm not sure, but I think
it may be connected to my use of QuarkXpress - it seems to happen more

Subject: Net configurations for 68K Macs
A few digests ago, we had a question from someone with an LC who wanted to
know what browser would offer the best combination of features,
compatability, and performance. Let me take that one step further: what
would the most reliable networking setup for a 68K Mac look like? I'm
configuring a IIci to give to a non-profit org, and want to minimize
support calls I get from them.
Dial-up connection: MacTCP? MacSLIP? FreePPP? Open Transport?
Browser: MacWeb? Mosaic/Netscape? Opera?
News: NewsWatcher? NewsHopper?
Mail: Eudora Light?
And how would these vary among the different flavors of 68K, like '020 or '030?
We could go back to old editions of the digest, or maybe Adam Engst's
books, but there may be more recent software that still works with the old
generation of Macs.
Unlike Windows-standard machines, there are a lot of ten-year-old Macs
still out there doing useful work.

Several suggestions, download Internet Explorer 4.01 as it has some fixes
for various bugs.
Then before you install, delete {or disable by moving it out of the System
folder completely or using a Extensions Manager} all of the old IE stuff,
look in the System Folder, the Extensions Folder, and the Preferences
=46older. That way you will be doing a clean install of Internet Explorer

Do the install and restart.
If the problem persists call the Explorer Tech support line, you get 90

knowledgeable and helpful.

There are a couple of diodes along the top of the Plus's analog board
which smoke at the slightest provocation. The originals are unmarked (or
when I've got to them, the marks have already burned off :-) but
scrounging in the junkbox has usually yielded a workable substitute.
Whatever I put in there seems to get REAL HOT, though.
If you don't recall a smoke leak, then maybe the problem is just a dry

apparently involved in sourcing all the voltages used in the entire

Subject: QD3D questions
Hi,
I have a couple of QD3D questions:
1. Can I somehow regulate the thickness of the linear geometry objects such as
line, ellipse and so on?
2. I have two objects: a box with a texture applied and an ellipse. The
ellipse object lies over the box. Both associated with the certain view and
they are being rendered in the same loop. The view has a Phong illumination
shader submitted. Now the question: how can I get the effect that the ellipse
does not reflect light and stays solid when rotating the view? I tried to
make set of attribute for ellipse object and assign there a null illumination
shader as a surface shader attribute. It didn't succeed at all.
3. What is uv parametrization. How to manage it?
4. When I entering any QD3D application I get the debugStr user break which
says Error Loading:DriverServicesLib (-2804) and then immediately the other
user break Warning: Failed to load Extension 1. How do I get off this breaks?
5. How can I draw an arc or torus segment with QD3D?

It's been behaving just fine for me but there is a little irritating thing
Apple has done that you have to work around. QT 2.5 could do lots of stuff
and you could access all its features through the Movie Player. Now QT 3
can do even more stuff but apple tries to get you to buy the Pro version of
QT3 by limiting Movie Player's access to most of these functions. You can
beat this by retaining Movie Player 2.5.1 when you install QT3 and then
trashing Movie Player 3 and using MP 2.5.1 instead. That way you'll get
access to all the keen new features of 3.0 without all the crappy little
advertising bits everytime you use it.

A hub provides a crossover, connecting transmit pair to
receive pair. To do this without a hub, you need a
crossover cable. This works fine, but only with two
devices. If you need a third, you need a hub. If you start
with a crossover cable and then get a hub, make sure you
get a hub with a non-crossed port (many have one port
switched, crossed or not). Otherwise you will have to
rewire one end of the crossover cable to make it
straight-thru.
Here are two resources I found extremely valuable:
http://wwwhost.ots.utexas.edu/ethernet/descript-10quickref.html
http://www.sustworks.com/interests/ethernet.html
The first is far more extensive; the second is clear and
simple and has some very good wiring pictures.
If you have any interest in giving both Macs Internet access
via a single PPP connection, check out IPNetRouter on the
home page of the Sustainable Softworks site
(www.sustworks.com).
You can buy prewired crossover cables, but not in nearly the
variety of straight-through cables. If you already have an
RJ-45 crimping tool, you can easily make your own.
Otherwise it's more economical to pay someone to make it.
With 5-port hubs available for under $60, consider whether
it's worth the extra hassle (even though it's only a
little) of using the crossover. I eventually straightened
mine.
When you have the wires correct, the green lights on both
Ethernet cards (and on the hub if you are using one) will
light up. No light means bad wiring.
