The PB 3400c has a ADB port on the left side at the rear near the foot
button. Its behind a small door that opens downward, and is almost
invisible.

There is a small door on the left side that covers the ADB port. It isn't
grouped with the other input/output sockets.

If you dis-allow fast saves you'll get a full save (compatible with Quark
XPress etc.) and then you could try installing "Hi's Universal Saver". From
his Web site:
"Hi's Universal Saver is a little application which runs quietly in the
background and automatically saves your work at an interval which you
select. It should work with any application that has a Save command (word
processors, painting, drawing, database and many, many others)." and his
site is at:

I hope this helps.

I was one of the respondents to the previous post. In the case I was
discussing, the problem is definitely a hardware one - and the workaround
(it is NOT a fix) is to adjust the monitor's internal geometry controls.
If you are *POSITIVE* that the symptom appeared for you IMMEDIATELY after
installing this Elixir program, then it may have altered your monitor
refresh rate. I can't see why it would want to, but anything's possible
(except skiing through a revolving door). Try in this order :
1. In Monitors and Sound, change "Recommended" to "All" so you can see all
the available refresh rates, and see if there are any settings shown that
fix your problem.
2. Trash Display Preferences, restart, zap PRAM, and see if the problem
disappears.
3. Assume it's a hardware problem which has coincidentally appeared right
after installing Elixir, and either follow the directions in my earlier
post, get someone else to follow them for you, or live with it 8-)

For this purpose, I use a shareware program called "Add/Strip". IMHO it works
extremely well, it's fast and reliable. It's available in the Info-Mac
Archive.
It does all kinds of jobs, just anything one might think about when it comes

It costs $ 25. (BTW, I have a PPC 8100/80 with System 7.1.2)

Subject: (Q) movies from mac to NT?
We have a series of Quicktime movies that were based on simulation output.
The movies were made by stringing a bunch of gif frames together. The
movies play fine with the Quicktime player included with the mac OS. The
problem is that we would like to move them to an Alpha NT 4.0 machine that
is acting as our web server. The files are too big to fit on a floppy. We
tried tranfering by FTP (through a unix machine to further complicate
things) (zipped or not) and never got a playable movie out of it. I am
guessing we might have a problem with file resource forks, but I don't know
how to solve it. I would appreciate any suggestions on how to transfer the
movies to the NT machine so we can serve them on the web.

Subject: (Q)Cable Modem Conniction
I am interested in getting a hi-speed cable modem connection through my
local cable TV company. I have a Quadra 605 with a 68040 processor.
They claim this connection is 50 times faster than a 28.8k modem.
However, Im sure this is based on a much faster processor than mine. So
my question is how much does the processor speed contribute to the
overall download rate? Or, how much faster will it be than my current
56k modem? Just trying to justify the $40 monthly access fee.

There is a tiny little door that covers the adb port, I believe it is on
the same side as the floppy, but could be wrong. It is toward the rear on
the side. Just kind of feel around, pushing gently and you should find it.
I don't have a G3 powerbook, but was shown by guys who do. I personally

Divide it into categories (e.g. net stuff, stationery)

Bud:
These require an Intel processor to run them. You can install an Intel
processor on an expansion card in your Mac, but that's kind of expensive.
The only way you can run them on a Mac's Motorola processor is to run them
on an emulator (software pretending to be an Intell processor). Connectix
makes one called Virtual PC and Insignia makes one called Real PC and
another called Softwindows. There all kind of in the $75 to $400 range I
think. Virtual PC with an OS (Win 3.1 or '95) costs us about $225 Canadian.

Files with names ending on ".exe" are DOS or WINDOWS applications. you
won't be able to use them unless you emulate a DOS or WINDOWS
environment on your PC. There are several possibilities, for example:
- Virtual PC
- Real PC
- SoftWindows
Don't ask me which is better than the other, I use none of them, but
surely each emulation has its Pros and Cons.
Depending on what Mac you have, you can also add hardware (a DOS
compatibility card, as it's called, from Apple or third-party
vendors) which in fact is a "PC in a Mac".
Best wishes, Christian

Yes, you can buy SoftWindows or Virtual PC or Real PC and run Windows on
your Mac. Then you can run the .exe files in that emulated Windows
environment.

The way the Power Mac handles Virtual memory is that by switching it on all
your programs will take up less ram but take a little while longer to launch
and in some cases be a tiny bit slower. Try turning VM off and see. Also try
the tests on images to see the true speed.

Utilizing different dip switch settings, the best I can get is a picture
that will not hold horizontally.
Now the funny part...I also have a 15" apple multi-scan monitor that can
bundled with my performa 638CD; it's almost three years old and works
fine. When i connect this monitor to the mac IIsi, i get nothing...a
blank dark screen.
Anyone know what's going on? After getting it to work with the toshiba
monitor, I reset the video to 256 colors, which should then work on the
apple monitor...but no luck.
I hate to use the toshiba 17" with this unit...can someone help?
FYI, the two adapters I have...one is one row with 10 dip switches, the
other is a two row each with 10 dip switches. Various permutations all
failed!

Subject: My problem connecting a powerbook and a mac via scsi disk mode revisited
I went back to the dealer, and told them nothing happened when ran with the
machines attached. We, and a couple of customer kibitzers, reread the section
in chapter 14, pages 433-434, third edition of Mac Secrets, and still are not
sure what to do.
I called the dealership where I got the powerbook 180, and got contradictory
advice about the terminator. It is not clear whether it is needed. If
needed, it is an odd terminator, since it must terminate the SCSI cable AND
connect to the desktop Mac. There is such a terminator, they think.
They told me to try again, with a different SCSI number (I had used 2) in
powerbook set up, so I tried 4.. A huge SCSI symbol marched across the
screen. But, when I turned on the desktop machine, the icon for the powerbook
did not appear. What could be wrong? Could the terminator is in fact needed?
If this can be gotten to work, all powerbooks and desktop machines owners
would be well advised to do it, since it promises to transfer data at terrific
speeds.
Thank you.

Subject: Netscape Navigator - Dialing in from different *locations*
Hello,
as I use my internet browser both for business and for private purposes, I
have to dial in from two locations, i.e. *work* and *home* ( from one and the
same phone ) , because this allows me to get my telephone costs split up
accordingly.
In the AOL browser, this can be done very elegantly in the first dialog box,
where one switches between the two locations with a simple mouse click. Very
practical !
Now I want to use Netscape Navigator, but as far as I know, the only place to
set the phone number for dialing is in MacTCP. I find this not only
impractical for the access through the apple menu, but also too time-consuming
to do several times a day. Apart from that, errors are made more easily .
Is there a way to solve this problem with NN ? Is it possible to have a quick
and easy way to choose and switch between phone numbers ? Perhaps with some
plug-in ?
BTW : Can Internet Explorer do this the way I need it ?
FYI : I have a PowerPC 8100/80 with System 7.1.2 and Netscape Navigator
4.0.3.
Thanks for any answer !

Subject: Norton and 8.1
After receiving warnings from several quarters that Norton Utilities for
the Macintosh NUM 3.5.x won't work with Mac OS 8.1, I decided to call
Symantec tech support, who say:
NUM 3.5.2 is compatible with Mac OS 8.1, but if you want an 8.1 NUM boot
disk (for a G3, for example), you need the NUM 3.5.3 replacement CD-ROM,
which 3.5.x users may order from Symantec for the cost of Priority Mail
shipping ($4.95). Currently on backorder, due to ship in "10-14 days."
No current version of Norton Utilities for the Macintosh includes disk
repair or optimization/defragmentation (Speed Disk) for HFS+-formatted
disks. Indeed, for safety, you dare not use any version before NUM 3.5.2
with HFS+-formatted disks. At least 3.5.2 and later see HFS+ disks as
remote volumes and won't attempt to repair or defragment them; earlier
versions can cause HFS+-disk corruption problems that are not easily
repaired. Symantec wouldn't give me a due date for the new NUM for HFS+
(previously announced for "fall," which someone reminded us runs until the
end of the year) but allowed as how they are working on it "feverishly" and
that betatesting should begin"soon."
I guess that only leaves me wondering how come Apple's new HFS+ disks
caught Symantec so much by surprise, apparently. Don't these people ever
talk to each other?

I recently upgraded a PowerMac 7100/80 from OS 7.5.5 with Open Transport
1.1.2 to 7.6.1 with OT 1.1.2. Both setups used/use Free PPP 2.6.2 to
connect to the ISP over first-rate copper phone lines for which I pay
Southwestern Bell a $3.50 monthly line conditioning fee for optimal modem
connections (USR56k V.90 modems on both ends).
Previously my dial-ins to the ISP were virtually problem-free. Now I'm
experiencing intermittent connection problems -- reported by no one else
among the ISP's clientele. Free PPP reports a connection but it's dropped
at password stage. This may happen twice and on the third try the
connection holds and communication is established.
Sometimes I open Free PPP Setup and open TCP/IP only to close it with no
changes because I read about a year or two ago that this worked for someone
else, reason unknown. It seems to work for me now, too: if I can't connect
normally with Free PPP, I open Free PPP Setup in the Free PPP Menu, open
and close the TCP/IP panel without change, and then click on the "Connect"
button. Works every time so far.
All suggestions/commiserations gratefully received.

Subject: PROBLEMS CONNECTING GCC PLP II PRINTER TO PM7300/180
Dear Macophiles,
I own a GCC PLP II printer, which I've had for about 8 years. It has
been a very good printer for me, hasn't given me any problems the whole
time. Late last year I purchased a Power Macintosh 7300/180 and OS8.0.
Until tonight I didn't try to connect and use the PLP II since I also have
a Color Stylewriter 2400, which served my needs. When I connect the PLP II
to the 7300, the computer won't boot--it freezes with a blank screen
showing only the pointer (which is also frozen). The boot process never
even gets to the happy/sad Mac screen. I can shut down using the button on
the front of the 7300.
My computer has OS 8.0 (Japanese version) installed. I have GCC Printer
Manager 4.1.3 installed. I verified that the SCSI ID of the computer's
internal hard drive and internal CD ROM aren't the same as the PLP II. I
changed the SCSI ID on the PLP II anyways. I connected the computer and
printer using a 3 ft and 6 ft cable. I tried with an external hard drive
between the computer and the printer, and then with only the computer and
printer in the SCSI chain. I tried with an additional terminator connected
to the back of the PLP II. None of these have solved the problem, every
time the result has been the same.
Previously I used this printer with a Macintosh Performa 550, with none
of these problems. I was using System 7.5 something, also Japanese
version, and printing came off without a hitch, so I don't consider the
problem to be with the Japanese system. Folks, is there something which
prevents the Power Mac 7300/180 from working at all with the PLP II? I
cannot find a more up to date version of the printer driver than 4.1.3,
which goes back to 1995. The problem is really vexing since the computer's
boot up process is interrupted before it even starts. Please help, the
Stylewriter is down now.

Subject: Providing for NoFrame Browsers
I built and have been maintaining a website for my church for a year or so.
Thus far I have not employed frames but I would like to do so. I have
constructed (but not deployed) a version of our website that is fully
frames-functional. My hesitancy in deploying this version is in providing
for browsers that are not frames-capable. I believe I understand use of the
requisite tages (i.e and ) but I have two specific
questions for anyone willing to elucidate me on either one:
1. One of the benefits of using frames is to take the navigation out of the
individual frames and putting it in a single directory frame. However, if I
want the site to be usable to non-frames-capable browsers, how can I
provide for intra-site links within the individual pages without having
them clutter the page when viewed as a frame? For example, for a
non-frames-capable browser, if my home page points to page A and I want
page A to be able to point back to my home page, I normally would insert in
page A a link to the home page. However, if I want that same page to be
used in a frame structure, I don't want to show the redundant linkage
because that information is already in my index frame which will be show
all the time. Can I put the "Home" link within a -
pair in page A? If I did that, would it be invisible when viewing that page
in the frame structure but visible when viewing it via a non-frames-capable
browser?
2. How can I test my site's performance for browsers which are not capable
of supporting frames? Do I need to use such a browser or is it possible to
tell a frames-capable browser to pretend it is not frames-capable? If so,
how do I do that? If it is not possible, how can I find a
non-frames-capable browser to use for testing?
TIA

Subject: Random stalls (Q)
Could you please help? I'm experiencing unaccountable stalls. They happen
while working in applications, during startup or even at idle when no
application is open. The stalls seem to occur at random intervals.
The mouse is not affected and continues to move properly, although it can't
do anything.
At first I thought it was due to a malfunction in my APS external drive,
but now it's happened even when the APS is offline.
I'm running System 7.6.1 on a Centris 650 with 20 mb RAM, virtual memory
off, and a screenful of extensions and control panels.
The scsi chain is: CPU - Zip - Conner - APS - Apple CD drive - HP ScanJet
P5. That's ideal; I've never been able to get all the devices on line at
the same time. Might the combination of the Zip and external CD drive be a
factor? I've heard that two removable media in a chain is a no-no, but I
never had trouble when using System 7.5.1.
Personal replies appreciated.

Subject: SCSI Disk MOde Questions
I am trying to use SCSI disk mode with a power book 180 running 7.5.1, and a
Mac IIvx running 7.5.5. I am trying to follow the directions in chapter 14 of
the Mac Secrets book, and having little success. I wonder if I am
misinterpreting the instructions somehow.
First, the book tells me to buy a HDI-30 SCSI Disk Adapter Cable. I was told
that I could buy an adapter that fits on one end of a standard 25 pin SCSI
cable that attaches a zip drive to a G3, for instance. I did that. The
adapter fits the description in the book, i.e., it has a switch that allows it
to operate in SCSI or in DOCK mode.
I opened the powerbook setup control panel, and choose the number 2, and
selected it. And shut down both mac. Then I connected the cable, with the
adapter at the power book end, to both machines. Here is my first question:
I was told by someone at the Mac store that I do not need a terminator,
whatever it is, to do this. So I tried to do this without the terminator on
the "fat" end of the cable, which I assume means the Mac II end.
When I turned the power book on, connected to the off Mac II, the disk that
appears at start up had a question mark in it, and that was that.
So the questions are: The book talks about both buying a cable and buying an
adapter. Is the adapter, plus a 25 pin SCSI cable equivalent to the HDI-30
SCSI cable? In other words, is the HDI SCSI/DOCK adapter correct, or is there
a cable to buy. Also, do I in fact need a terminator? I assume the store
will sell me a terminator whatever it is... Is there anything else necessary?
Thanks for the help.

About a year ago we got a Powermac & a stylewriter 2200. The 2200 is a
really nifty little portable colour printer, that gives great quality
copy. However, it has an annoying tendency to turn itself off
(environmentally friendly, but not user friendly) and takes up a printer
port, when we'd like to be able to hook it up to appletalk. Anyway, the
time has come to upgrade the system, from 7.5.5J to 8.1J. I've been
checking the apple sites (US & Japan) and can't find any info on what the
current recommended 2200 driver is. Does anyone know whether the 2200
driver as supplied a year and a bit ago in Japan is compatible with 8.1?
I can't see why it wouldn't be, but we use the printer a lot, and if I
upgrade our system, and switch the printer into "paperweight mode" my
wife WON't be impressed...
(Does anyone have a good source of info for this 'orphaned' printer? A
suggestion for how to free up the printer port, other than by getting
another computer, would be really appreciated, as would a way of stopping
it turning off! All I've found on any apple site is the 1 page technical
doc., with no drivers at all.)

Subject: Tech Tool Pro 2.0.2 (C)
I just got the new TechTool Pro of the 2.0.2 persuasion and sent the
following note to MicroMat. Maybe some of y'all would be interested
in my initial findings.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Thank you, folks, for (1) sending my TechTool Pro 2.0.2 upgrade
from 1.0.3, (2) waiting until TechTool Pro was solid before you
sent it to me, and (3) including my serial number on the mailing
label. The last is rather important. I didn't need a serial number
to install 1.0.3, so I didn't actually have it anywhere else.
If I might have the temerity to address the issue, a couple notes
on installation. No, nothing was amiss with standard installation
onto the boot HD on my 7300. And your CD booted on the 7300 right
smart. However, I prefer to glom my emergency toys onto a single
boot disc (Floppy disk if possible as the most general. M/O or
ZIP disc for biggies).
Tech Tool Pro is a tad largish for a boot floppy. Norton 3.5.2 isn't.
Y'all might work on a critical subset that fits. Or not.
At any rate, I have a boot ZIP for my desktop machine (and for my
Powerbook) that pretty much has everything I can do to fix busted
stuff. I could not install TTP onto that ZIP if I booted from HD.
Your installer said there was a duplicate copy of the TT Protection
CP and asked if I should replace it. Say what? That puppy only existed
on my HD. You went to the active system folder instead of to the one
on the disc I requested. Naughty. You did a proper install only after
I booted from the ZIP.
Then came the Powerbook's emergency ZIP. The "VST" drive isn't like
a SCSI ZIP drive. Won't boot a desktop Mac. The VST boot ZIP doesn't
have the horsepower to link into the home ethernetlet to install from
your CD that is shared (the way I normally install software on the PB).
Hmmm. What to do? First cut: copy the TTP folder on CD to the PB's ZIP.
No joy. The PB booted from ZIP, and TTP asked for the CD. Second try
was the charm: copy the TTP folder from the installed version on my
desktop HD to the ZIP disc. Didn't even want my reg-no afterwards.
I don't think I'm doing anything outre. If an HD goes Dixie, I want to
be able to diagnose/repair it from an external. That your CD boots is
great for machines that have integral CD-ROM drives. Doesn't help for
my PB5300. It'd be useful if y'all (1) installed everything on the
selected boot disk and (2) included instructions on coping with other
machines.
This is just a suggestion for improvement on what appears to be a great
product. We've needed an alternative to NUM for quite a while. And Disk
Essentials certainly wasn't. Y'all have done a good job with your
freeware TechTool for many years. TechTool Pro seems to be a typically
outstanding MicroMat product.
BTW, I tested TTP2 the same way I tested Disk Essentials. Against Norton.
DE found problems that it fixed. Norton found problems with DE fixes and
fixed them. Ad infinitum. TTP2 found problems and fixed them. Norton did
not find any problems with your fixes. Y'all may not be right, but you're
consistent.

I recently inherited a TI OmniLaser 2108, a once-was-quite-high-end
PostScript laser printer based around a Ricoh engine. Is there anyone using
this beastie with a Mac? I downloaded the PPD from Genicom, but I can't get
it to work with LaserWriter 8. I coaxed the printer's front-panel menu
through to put it in AppleTalk mode, but on the back there are only
Centronics, and 9-pin and 25-pin serial ports. I tried using a modem cable
to the 25-pin serial port, which didn't work for AppleTalk (though I could
use a term prog to print text OK).
I have another, better laser for my Mac anyway, but if I can get this
varmint working, it would be just the ticket for draft work.
Also, does anyone happen to have a spec sheet for this printer? From
reading the PPD, I guess it's 300dpi and has 512K of RAM, but I'd like to
know more; e.g. RAM expandability. The mainboard is real hard to get out, I
want to leave it in there unless I really HAVE to pull it.
