ScaleCalc
ScaleCalc is a set of simple model railroad calculators which include a
scale convertor, a grade calculator, and a helix calculator. Each of
these calculators is presented in its own window. You may have as many
of each window open as memory allows.
ScaleCalc is email-ware. If you like it, send me email. Please feel free
to include complaints, comments and suggestions.
The Scale Calculator
The scale calculator is the simplest of the windows to operate. Just
enter a set of measurements in either the unscaled or the scaled
section, select a scale and click on the arrow pointing to the other
section. For example, entering 1 in the miles box and clicking on the
downward arrow will generate a scaled measurement of 60 feet 7 and 7/16
inches. (Note: If you follow this by clicking on the upwards arrow, the
result will be 5279 feet, 11 and 51/64 inches. Since measurements are
only kept to the nearest 1/64 of an inch, some accuracy is lost.)
Conversion between scales is a two-step process best illustrated by
example. If an HO-scale object (say a car) measures 10 (real) inches,
and you want to know the size of the same object in N scale, enter 10
into the inches box in the scaled section. Select HO as the scale and
click on the upwards arrow. Then select N as the scale and click on the
downwards arrow. The scaled section will now show a length of 7 and 7/16
inches.
The Grade Calculator
To use the grade calculator, fill in any two of the four factors:
horizontal distance, incline (track distance), rise, or grade. For grade
use the percent, such as 2.5. Click on the "Use" radio buttons for the
factors that you want to base the calculation on and the "Compute" radio
buttons for the two factors that you want to compute. This will make the
"Compute" push button at the bottom of the window active. Click it to
calculate. Note: Exactly two "Use" radio buttons must be on to make the
Compute push button active.
Only for very high grades or very long grades will there be any
noticable difference in the horizontal and the incline distances.
The Helix Calculator
For the helix calculator, three of the four factors must be filled in.
Here the factors are total rise, radius, number of turns, and grade. You
may use a decimal point in the radius, turns, and grade boxes. (For

Subject: [*] Alans Solitaire 1.03
Alans Solitaire 1.03 - is an obscure challenging form of solitaire. It's easy to
play, quick, offers hints, and has an auto play feature. The object is to remove
all of the cards from the board. You win when all cards have been removed from
the board. You loose when all cards have been dealt from the deck and there are
still cards remaining on the board. Be forewarned, wins are rare! On average you
will win only about 5% of the games you play.

Subject: [*] blobsculptor-12.hqx
ENCINITAS, Calif. USA --January 1, 1998-- esp Software has announced the
release of version 1.2 of Blob Sculptor for Mac OS. Blob Sculptor is a
3-D CAD modeler application, allowing easy creation of complex 3-D shapes
using metaball/blob objects. Blob Sculptor can export the shapes to many
3-D object file formats, including DXF, 3DMF/QuickDraw3D, POV-Ray,
PolyRay, and RAW. Small, fast and powerful, it runs on any 68020 or
better Macintosh, with or without an FPU, and is also accellerated for
Power Macintosh. It runs on Mac OS 7 or 8, and does not require
QuickTime or QuickDraw 3D. QuickDraw 3D is only needed if you wish to
export to 3DMF format.
Many new features have been added since version 1.1, including:
-Can now export to 3DMF/QuickDraw3D.
-Main window expands on larger monitors.
-Can now display the final "preview" in place of the camera view, for a
constantly updated preview display.
-New "mirroring" commands for quickly making symmetrical objects.
-New gray window color scheme to match other modelers.
-Many more example blob files provided.
-Updated documentation.
Blob Sculptor for Mac OS is available on the esp Software web page at:
It is also available on CompuServe, in the POVRAY forum under "MAC & PPC
UTILS". It can also be found on the internet on the info-mac mirror
sites, in the info-mac/gst/grf/ directory as blobsculptor-12.hqx.
The original Blob Sculptor application is authored by Alfonso Hermida and
Steve Anger on MSDOS, and this is a Mac OS conversion of their original
work, with their permission of course. This utility is brought to you by
esp Software,

Subject: [*] GEOCAD 1.2.6 german submission
GEOCAD 1.2.6 is the latest german version of the number-one shareware
desktop mapping tool GEOCAD for Macintosh computers. GEOCAD 1.2.6 allows
to create maps based on GEOCAD's own coordinates or on cbd-coordinates
from CIA world mapping program, which are available for free and cover
the entire world with more than 15,000,000 coordinates. The layer
concept of GEOCAD allows the user to create overlays of different object
types and representations, such as grid lines, coastlines, rivers and
whatever should be plotted. GEOCAD 1.2.6 is shareware, and you may use
it free for 14days, then you have to pay the shareware fee of US$30,-
Changes in version 1.2.6:
- introduced a user-defined section line for cylindric projections to
allow the user to plot any part of the world in the center of a map
- grid lines can be delimited in range, so they can be cut at any degree
e.g. not to reach the north pole in a plot of arctic regions
- some minor bugfixes
Changes in version 1.2.5:
- dramatically improved memory management for more performance and
stability
- improved cacheing of single layers makes redraws of multilayer-maps
faster
- improved layer concept
- improved dtp-capabilities, such as high-resolution pict-export
- enabled renaming of objects types (e.g., 'small town' instead of
'city')
- improved selection of single objects and their children (e.g.,plot
only 'Italy' and children)
- alias support for coordinate files
- fixed a bug that created unwanted horizontal lines in some cbd-maps
- fixed some hundreds of minor bugs
System requirements:
- Power Macintosh (ppc)
- System 7.5 or later (GEOCAD is 100% MacOS8 compatible)
- at least 16MB of free RAM (including virtual memory)

The Icons
Here is a small collection of insect icons that I created on my Mac
using ResEdit. Not only will they make your Mac look tr=E9s cool, they
will will also provide limitless opportunities for bad puns about =93bugs=94
in your system.
They're Freeware!
They are absolutely free. Gratis. No charge. Send no money. However,
I would like to receive an e-mail if you use them. This is my first
experiment in freeware distribution and I'm interested to see where
these things end up; so if you give them away to others, please include
this Read Me.
A Final Note
Next time you find an insect in your house or see one outside, take a
close look at it and think twice before smashing it into pulp. Once you
start looking closly at insects, you will be amazed by their infinite
variety. Trust me, bugs are cool.

Subject: [*] More File Info CMM Plug-in 1.1
Have you ever wanted to check the type and creator for a file
easily without using utility program like FileBuddy? Have you
ever wanted to know what is the actual GIF/JPEG file size after
taking off the fancy thummail icon and other resources ?
Unfortunatelly, the information such as file type, creator, size
of the resource fork, size of the data fork does not appear on the
Get Info dialog. It can only be obtained by some special utility
programs. Although using such utility is not a hard job, it still
a bit troublesome for the lazy person like me. That's why I develop
this plug-in.
This is a MacOS 8 Contextual Menu Manager plug-in. When you
control-click on Finder files, the plug-in displays such information
to the contextual popup menu that appears.

Subject: [*] PowerReplace 6.3; a text conversion utility
Announcing the release of PowerReplace 6.3! PowerReplace is a powerful
text conversion utility. It does the conversion using a small file called
"Filter". The syntax of filter is very easy to understand. PowerReplace is
also an utility to build text conversion application. It can create small
stand-alone daughter-application called "SelfReplace", who makes your
favorite conversion more easily and efficiently.
PowerReplace can replace character (including NULL, CR, LF, TAB) or string
by any other string. By use of the asterisk-sign(*) representing any
indeterminate string, it can replace also a string only whose two
extremities are known. It supports all character set, hexadecimal string
and regular expression(pattern) for find/replace.
ver. 6.2 -> 6.3:
- Added Stack Windows command in the Control menu. Use this
command to move all windows to its standard position.
- You can now add string to the begin and the end of the
text files. Syntax:
"*BOF*" "The begin of my file.\r"
"*EOF*" "\rThe end of my file."
- Fixed a few bugs.

- System 7.1
- Any Macintosh

SFX Machine Demo 1.11 - Audio Multi-Effects Plug-In
SFX Machine Demo 1.11 adds dozens of new presets, some new features, and a
few bug fixes.
BIAS's SFX Machine is the ultimate sound design and audio effects tool. It
recently won Electronic Musician's 1998 Editor's Choice Award for Best DSP
plug-in of 1997, and Keyboard magazine called it a "Key Buy."
This Premiere-format plug-in can be used as a sample creation tool, a sound
design tool, or a multi-effects unit that goes far beyond the usual types
of effects. It has a simple front-end that lets you load presets and modify
them using sliders. Over 240 presets are included, and more are available
from our web site. In addition, a powerful modular synthesis engine lets
you create your own effects. If you want, the Randomize button will make
something up for you.
SFX Machine requires a Power Macintosh, a Premiere-format host program and
at least 16 Meg of RAM. It works with BIAS Peak, Macromedia's Deck II,
Opcode's Vision and Studio Vision Pro 3.5, Adobe Premiere, Digital
Performer 2.1, Emagic Logic Audio 3.0 and TurboMorph. If you don't
currently own a Premiere-format program, you can download Peak LE from our
web site or from Info-Mac.
SFX Machine lists for $299 and can be ordered from 1-800-775-2427
(1-415-467-8446 International). For more information, see our web site at

Subject: 2 FileMaker Pro ?s: Printing long fields & starting other apps...
Hi All,
I have 2 questions about FileMaker Pro (FM) 4.0 which have totally stumped
me. The first one is life-threatening, the second is just a "nice to have".
1) I have a text field which CAN (but must not) contain a LOT of text. So
much text, in fact, that you need a scrollbar to see it all. However,
quite often this field is empty. When I go to print, I only get the
visible part of the field when, in fact, I want the whole thing printed
(that is, it would be REALLY nice if the field could "grow" to accommodate
all the text). I don't want to make the field huge because, in most cases,
it's empty. Any ideas how to get this field to print out in its entirity
(without making the field so huge it would fit all possible text which I
might enter since I really don't know how long it could be)?
2) I want to have a button which, when clicked, will launch another program
(this is on Windows '95, but I'd like to know in general for the Mac too).
I want to be able to lauch a scanner/ocr program from within FM so I can
scan text, and then copy it into the above (long) text field. Is this
possible?
MUCH TIA for any help you can provide...
Sincerely,
E. Blasberg
P.S.- I would greatly appreciate it if replies could be made directly to me
as I'm not reading the lists so regularly at the moment- Thanks!

Subject: [Q] 6116 & Word
One of my facutly has been having a problem with MSWord 5.1a and a
PowerMac 6116CD (System 7.5 vanilla as far as I know). This is at her
home so I can't go see what's what.
When typing a document, the menus will jump off the side of the screen
(the apple, File, and Edit menus disappear). Restarting fixes the problem.
She, of course, can't tell me what she did to make this happen.
Word is all she uses so I can't find out if this is limited to Word or
not.
Ideas?
Thanks,

Subject: Apple 15" monitor problem
We have an Apple 15" multisync monitor that appears to be losing the red
color, though after it warms up it runs okay. However, it takes several
hours for it to return to normal.
We took it to our local dealer, who informed us that this particular
monitor was covered under an Apple "replacement" program. They said it
would cost nearly as much to replace the monitor as to buy a new one,
which, of course, doesn't make much sense.
Is there any way around this? We have tried contacting Apple directly,
but get shuttled from one customer rep to the next with no help. Any
information anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Subject: Games for Babies?
I'm excited. A former Windows user at work took advantage of the company's
ditching all their Macs to buy one for his 2-3/4-year-old son. The little
boy does not speak yet, and apparently has some problem with translating
thought into speech. He appears to understand but can't get words out. His
father got the SE30 for him with a graphics card of some kind that lets it
run a 21" greyscale monitor!
Anyway, he's looking for games for his son. It will be the son's computer.
I mentioned that people had talked about "Baby Bash" and I will look for
that for them. He was also hoping that there was something that might let
the child hit a key on the keyboard then see the letter really big on the
screen and perhaps have the program say the letter or its sound.
He's also looking for little games where the child will be able to drag
things around. He has doubts that the boy will be very good at
double-clicking, though we will slow down the double-click speed and I
happen to think his son is going to surprise him.
Meanwhile, can some of you parents out there suggest good games for this
computer/child combination?

I did one of my periodic sweeps of the net the other day checking for
upgrades to my various programs. I was disturbed to see that Address
Book is no longer available. I dropped a note to the "more info" e-mail

Book's author, has died.
Jim was among my favorite shareware authors. He listened to my patented
rants and raves, and he most often responded to them with ADBK upgrades
that shut me up. At no extra cost to anyone. I considered him one of many
friends-I've-never-met on the internet. He was one of the good guys.
I suspect I'm far from alone in missing him.

Since Apple's online documentation of QuickTime 3.0 is dicey at best, I
have a few questons about it that maybe someone out there can help with...
Will there be NEW types of files that are double-clickable in the Finder?
>From what I can tell, it sounds that way. Regardless, I just want to make
sure I don't trash out any older utilities (like JPEGView, Sparkle, and
AVI to QT) if I'll still be needing them. Also, I could be mistaken here
again, but it also sounds like .wavs and other sound formats will be
double-clickable.
And lastly, when is it supposed to go final?

Subject: telnet ftp failures
I have encountered an interesting problem. I am using BetterTelnet
1.1.1 on System 8 to connect via dial-in to a host. If I ftp a file
from the host, it works properly. Quite large files (<6Mb) have been
sent without problems. However, when I try to ftp a file to the host
that is about 8K bytes, it fails every time.
The failure occurs at the same point in the file each time. A packet
trace shows that 4 data packets are sent by the Mac and the first three
are ackd by the host. Immediately after the 4th data packet, the Mac
sends another packet from port 20 to the host with the contents
"tcp_disconnect_one" and the Reset bit on. The host thus terminates the
connection.
I know I used to ftp large files to the host with a PB-170 and system
7.0.1. I don't remember if I ever did it after swithing to the PB-3400.
Any ideas will be appreciated. Thanks,
