About This Computer Replacements
Version 1.0
2/28/98
These are some replacement pictures for the MacOS 8.x "About This Computer"
dialog box. As yet another way to customize your Macintosh. Software
developers tracking memory leaks should appreciate a little change from the
same boring Earth from Space picture.
Included are a few variations on the MacOS logo, some shameless plugs for
the projects I'm working on (The Loft- formerly Event Horizon Reality
Studio), and a special one for those of use who know the ins and out of
ResEdit a little too well.
System Requirements:
MacOS 8 or above. That's it!
Installation:
There are two ways to use these:
1. Edit your Finder with ResEdit (not for the faint of heart!)
2. Use Mac Identifier 2.x
Enjoy!

Program: FontView
Version: 1.58b
Suggested Path: /info-mac/_Font/
Selected by MacUser as "...one of the 12 essential DTP utilities...",
FontView can display a window with the full character set for any selected
font. Each character in the main window may be examined more closely with a
double-click on any character. This will supply the character's keystroke,
an enlarged view of the character, HTML character entity values, and the
character's ascent, descent, and width. FontView also provides information
about the typeface's FONT, NFNT, FOND resources, and outline font files
(i.e. TrueType and PostScript outline font files). Fonts contained in font
suitcases can also be examined, without needing to install them in your
system folder.
See the URL for more detailed information
on FontView's features.
Requires System 7.0 or better, System 8 preferred.

Subject: [*] genealogy pro 3.0
Although Genealogy Pro 3.0 has been on my web
site for quite a while, I still get email regarding the
version 2 Demo product. I therefore though it appropriate
to submit the version 3 product to the ftp sites.
THIS IS NOT A DEMO VERSION. IT IS THE FULL VERSION.
Although intended as a beta release, it is probably more
stable and less buggy than the version 2.
I have only posted the 68K version as the I have
had reports of the power PC and fat version crashing.
However, if users wish, they can download the powerPC
version from the web site:
http://www.pobox.com/~mevolve
Unfortunately, I dont have the capital (or time)
to invest in substantially modifying this program
at this stage. Hence the reason for the incomplete
powerPC version. I know it will run ok on my mac
LC630 with a daystar powerPC card, but have not
been able to test it on other machines. As usual of
course, the 68K version will run on all powerPC
machines in emulation mode.
There is a little bit of documentation (no pictures sorry
- this needs to be upgraded too) at the web site.
Please remove the Genealogy Pro 2.1 demo's from your
ftp servers please.
While feedback is much appreciated, I cannot guarantee a
quick turnaround in reply.
However, hope you enjoy.
nb This is, of course, a software program for charting
family trees. Includes extensive databse, charting facilities,
etc.

This is a program that uses the Internet Config extension mappings to fix
the macintosh file types of files when you drag files (or folders) onto
the program. Unlike the other utilities like this, beyond just looking at
the file extension, it also looks into the file for various headers to
recognize files without extensions. It recognizes some common file
formats such as GIF or JPEG images, PDF files, PostScript files, QuickTime
movies, and several others.
This program is free to use or distribute how ever you want, I'm not
responsible for any problems it might cause.

This is a HyperCard stack shareware program called "it'll never happen to me."
(Version 3.0) It is basically an educational game designed to get kids (and
adults) to begin thinking realistically about risks and how to weigh their
relative importance. Kids and teens are often blissfully unaware of
risks--generally believing that they are invincible. Adults, on the other
hand, tend to worry about the wrong risks.
Requires a Mac and HyperCard 2.2 or 2.3, or a recent HyperCard player. A fat
standalone version that does not require HyperCard is also available upon

Subject: [*] Kineticon 1.0.2 - animated icons on your desktop!
Announcing the release of Kineticon 1.0.2!
Bring your Mac's motionless icons to life!
Kineticon is a system extension which replaces normal, static icons on your
Macintosh's desktop and in its windows with chosen animated icons.
Kineticon is fully configurable, allowing you to choose which icons should
animate simply by enabling them within Kineticon's editor.
Kineticon Editor (included in the Kineticon package) allows you to create
custom animations which can be made to appear in place of any icon
displayed by your Macintosh.
With Kineticon you will have THE COOLEST hard drive icon on your block!
With Kineticon you will have THE CUTEST trash can icon in your neighborhood!
And remember, if you don't like the included animations, you can easily
make your own!
Some of the changes in version 1.0.2 from version 1.0.1:
* Fixed a RAM allocation problem.
* Fixed a couple of seemingly random crashing bugs (Kineticon is now MUCH
more stable).
System requirements:
* Any Macintosh with at least a 68020 processor (both 68K and PowerPC Macs
are supported).
* System 7.1 or higher (may work on earlier systems above 7.0 - only tested
with systems 7.5 through 8.1).
* Color (doesn't work in grayscale or black and white, sorry).
* Free RAM: at least 300K. More RAM is needed depending on how many
animating icons are enabled.
* 2 MB of hard drive space (for the extension, editor and animating icon
files).
* Faster Macs (such as PowerMacs) are recommended.
Cost:
* All this for only $10 US! (Kineticon is shareware)
For more information, please read the READ ME file enclosed with Kineticon.

Here is the new version of the 'Verbs & Nouns' application - 1.9.1
'Verbs & Nouns' is an application for practising inflection, translation
and pronunciation at the level of single words. Features include the
opportunity to do inflection exercises, and translation exercises in

identifies the words that the student has difficulty with. Along with
the program, you need a module for the target language concerned. The

Two questions:
(1) Does the mouse appear to be more erratic when the computer has been on
for a little while than it did when you first started the computer up?
(2) Have you tried to clean the mouse?
I had the same type of problem at one time. In my case I had something
corrupted that was stored in PRAM. Doing the usual (command, option, p, r)
PRAM zap did not work for me. I had to remove the battery and leave it out
until everything was completely reset. (approx, 30 min. that's how long it
took for my computer anyway)
Hope this works for you.
I also have a request to everyone. I am designing a web page and I would be
interested to know what you would like to see on a web page. I would like
to focus the page around the Macintosh folks but not limit it to. Any
suggestions you may have would be welcome.

may load slow if you have a slow modem)

The mouse on my computer is now erratic, moving around the screen. Do I
have a problem with the mouse and need to buy a new one, or could it be an
extension problem?
Suggestion:
Most likely your mouse needs cleaning.
Turn the mouse upside-down and turn the plastic retaining ring on the botto=
m
which keeps the ball in place counterclockwise to disengage it. Then take t=
he
ball out and inspect and clean it. It may have accumulated some dirt. Next=20=
clean
the three small rollers inside the mouse with a Q-tip moistened with a litt=
le
water. If you have a can of DustAway or other oil free compressed air, try
blowing out the inside of the mouse as dust bunnies like to accumulate and=20=
hide
along the rollers.
If all this fails it may be time for a new mouse as the contacts inside do=20=
wear
out. You can find them cheaper via mail order.=20

Subject: [A} Help with Apple MIDI Manager
Fred asked about the Apple MIDI Manager and OS 8. After a recent crash, he
can't get it to work.
The Apple MIDI Manager is a bit old, so it doesn't follow the usual rules
about where files go. From memory, I think the Apple MIDI Manager extension
itself goes in the Extensions Folder, but everything else goes loose in the
System Folder.
Does anyone know what Apple's current plans are regarding MIDI? The last I
heard (some time ago) was that the Apple MIDI Manager was no longer
supported, as we are all meant to be changing to OMS. But I haven't seen any
evidence of this. MIDI and Quicktime ought to be closely integrated, but it
is not obvious in Quicktime 2.5, apart from the control panel that allows
you to route MIDI to an external synth instead of the Quicktime synth. And I
still appear to need the Apple MIDI Manager. I'm confused.

Subject: [Q] Epson Stylus Color printers
Hello.
I do graphics work and was recently thinking of upgrading my Apple
StyleWriter 1500 printer to a faster networkable color printer. I read some
good things about the Epson Color Stylus 800 and Photo printers. I wanted
some feedback from anyone using these printers, or anything else, that
could suit the following requirements:
* ethernet-networkable -> how is Epson implementation of this with the
adapter? Does the machine print faster?
* color quality and print speed -> do they print out pages fast? how are
the colors for graphics work?
* PostScript options -> I know that Epson offers a PostScript RIP
(software). Since I print alot from QuarkXPress, I need this feature. How
do images' quality change / reproduce? What about the resolution?
* Has anyone used these printers with StyleScript (new Freedom of the
press)? How are they using this software RIP? Does the quality suffer at
all?
* What about the cost of the consumables? Do the C M Y K inks come in
different tubes, or is it a one-shot replacement system (ie: waste alot of
unused ink because one color has run out)?
Any other rants or raves would be appreciated.
Thank you.

Subject: Eudora with multiple users
A further step to take with multiple Eudora users using the same workstations:
On each work station create a empty WORD PROCESSING document entitled:
Eudora Folder, place this in the system folder (on the top level). If you
create an empty FOLDER entitled Eudora, Eudora will just fill this up with
each users settings, etc.
This step is required by the Eudora application, otherwise it will still
create a folder entitled Eudora folder in the system folder with each users
settings in it, and with each consecutive user Eudora will over write the
previous user's info. When the word processing document (entitled Eudora
Folder) is in the system folder this is a sign to Eudora to save the
settings, mailboxes, etc to disk. If a user tries to open Eudora from the
application (and not their settings on their disk) they will receive this
message:
"Eudora cannot continue. The owners of this Mac insist that you open Eudora
from an Eudora settings document. Ask them for help. Quit now."

Subject: Hard Disk Toolkit 2.5 and Powerbook 5300 Sleep problem
Greetings. I recently "upgraded" the drivers on my Powerbook 5300 using HDT
V2.5 (from HDT 2.06). Powerbook is running System 8.1 and has an IBM 1GB
hard drive.
After installing HDT 2.5, the Powerbook will not wake up from sleep mode. I
tried setting the "Power Management" on, with no effect.
HDT tech support's only suggestion was to reinstall version 2.06 and
"downdate" the drivers to the old version.
Has anyone else seen this problem, and/or have a suggestion for fixing it?
Thanx in advance.

Subject: Iomega Findit Problem With IDE Drive
I have used the Iomega packet of Disk Direct/Findit to back up an APS HD
quite successfully, but now have a problem with backing up the IDE HD on my
Power Mac 6500, as it seems the Findit application does not see this drive
when called upon to automatically catalog the HD contents on shutdown. I
downloaded the latest Zip Tools from Iomega, but this has no update for
Findit. In fact, I can find no reference to Findit on the Iomega home page.
At present, I have to go through a lengthy cataloging of every Zip disk,
whenever I attempt to perform a back-up. It works, but not as it did with
the old APS SCSI HD.
Any solution?

Subject: memory/modern memory manager
I have heard about this "Modern Memory Manager", but I don't have it on my
system. I am running 7.6.1 on a 7300/200 with 32 meg of ram. Why doesn't it
show up?
I am also wondering why I suddenly can't print a color Clariswork 3.0
document on my stylewriter 1500 with a colour cartridge? When I switch to a
B&W cartridge, I can't print B&W or Grayscale...
I have allocated plenty of memory to the program.
I am also having problems with other apps being out of memory no matter how
much memory is allocated to them.
My cache is set to 515, I have virtual memory off, and there is no ram disk.
I would really appreciate your insight on why these things may be
happening. I know my Mac inside out, but I can't figure out why this is
happening.
Thanks for your time,

I am using a 4400/200 with KT (Japanese) 8.0 at work. The monitor is a
multiscan 15" Iiyama, which works fine (usually) at 800 x 600 resolution,
32000 colours, although other resolutions are available as well. Except,
every so often, it suddenly switches to clunky 640 x 480, and gives this
as the only resolution allowable, meaning my screen is a mess, and my
working area tiny. It stays this way for a few weeks and then, one random
restart (I shut it down every night) it's suddenly OK again. Anyone come
across this before? It was doing the same thing under KT 7.6.1 as well.
Is it related to Window Monkey, about the only "widget" I have on it?
(Please say no-it's wonderful!) [That's right; no Kaleidoscope, or
anything else.]

I recently bought a Performa 5260 (PPC) which behaves strangely every
time I restart it. The power light goes out and the monitor becomes black
for a couple of seconds, indicating the computer is momenteraly powering
down just as when I shut it down. Then a harsh mechanical sound can be
heard followed by the hard drive spinning up and the power light and
monitor getting back to life again.
Is this a normal behaviour or should I be alarmed by the temporary loss
of power and the 'kicking' sound?
Thanks for any info!

Something I found that works well on an ongoing basis is to insert a Zip
with a system on it (not really sure if the Zip must have a system) then
go to the Startup Disks Control panel and select the Zip as the startup
disk.
This has worked successfully for me. When I have a Zip (with a system
in the drive) and I reset I simply allow the Zip to cycle throught the
eject then insert the Zip back in (don't force it).
When there is no Zip disk in the drive during the start up process it
simply boots off the internal HD.
