Subject: [*] Bubblomania 1.5.4
Lord Jochen from Swordlord today announced the release of version 1.5.4 of
Bubblomania, his fast arcade/action game for the Mac.
What is Bubblomania ?
Bubblomania is a fast arcade/action game with subtle gameplay. The player
has to move a pin on top of the screen to catch the colorful bubbles, which
are rising faster and faster. There are lots of different bubbles. Some of
them are containing bonus points, lasers, bombs, or other stuff. And
offcourse there are killer bubbles to make your life miserable! To obtain a
highscore, you need to discover some tricks and secrets. But most important:
be concentrated and keep cool!
Bubblomania is US$10 shareware. It's available from the Bubblomania Homepage
and all major Macintosh shareware ftp sites.
System requirements: Any MacOS compatible computer with a PowerPC processor
running System 7.0 or later, and a color monitor with at least a 640*480
resolution at 8 bits.
Features
- Extra bubbles and backgrounds can be added as separate files, which are
available from my homepage.
- Extreme Action Mode option : an easy way of cheating. Combined with the
'Difficult game', 'Always shaking' and 'Fast as lightning' options, this
game will blow your mind!
- The maximum framerate is set to 32 frames per second...
- The score limit in the unregistered version is removed, so people can
practice the complete game...
What's new in Bubblomania 1.5.4?
- added Swordlord info in game and readme
- nicer introscreen
- finally added support for AppleEvents
Availability
Bubblomania 1.5.4 is now available for download at
, and very soon on all major Mac
shareware ftp sites.

My wife is using a PB 3400 we recently purchased and I would like to find
some way to automate with a double click on an alias or script on the
desktop to switch between TCP/IP settings. When she is near phone lines
she needs TCP/IP to be set to PPP, but when she's on her University's
campus, she can plug right into their network. This means that she needs
to be on the 'ethernet' settings of TCP/IP. I am aware that one can just
pull up the configs and choose the config you need, but this is a bit more
complicated than my wife needs to get. A script would be excellent.
Thanks in advance if you'd write directly to my email: daerid@io.com

Subject: "Insufficient System Memory to Run Word"
The same friend with the CD-ROM AVI problem is also trying to run Microsoft
Word 5.1a on his PowerMac, with 16MB physical RAM and 8MB used as virtual
memory (total: 24MB). System software (7.6.1) takes up about 11MB. Most of
the time, it will tell him there is insufficient system memory to run Word,
and the usual tricks (quitting and trying again; reducing Word's preferred
memory size; launching another app first; rebooting; etc.) don't seem to
work. No other apps are open at the time, other than Speed Doubler 8 and CE
Toolbox, which are background apps for Speed Doubler and Quickeys,
respectively.
All I can do is tell him to reboot with extensions disabled, which works
every time, but of course disables all the cool extensions I installed to
make the Mac easier for him to use (he's a computer novice). Are there any
fool-proof ways to make Word 5.1a launch reliably? And I know extra
physical RAM would be a big help, but that will have to wait for some funds
at his end.

Subject: (Q) 13 PCI slot G3, and 7 PCI slot G3 Powerbook
Dear Digest readers,
OK what's the catch, why haven't I heard of http://www.magma.com before?
Why hasn't anyone told the people who worry the G3 comes with too few slots
that there is a solution at http://www.magma.com.
Specificly at:
http://www.magma.com/pci/pci713rm.htm
http://www.magma.com/pci/pbgs7dt.htm
It would seem that not only is there a solution to the G3 slot problem,
there appears to be one where you don't have to be stuck with the fact Apple
is claiming it won't run MacOS X on anything other than a pure G3 processor
and having too few slots to go with it. Is there something about this
company that is so unkosher that the desktop publishing industry has been
silent to "MacWorld" about it? Because it would sure seem to resolve a lot
of issues "MacWorld" claims exist that wouldn't if what this company reports
to be selling are true. This would mean an OrangeMicro card can be attached
to a Powerbook, and that a 3dFX card could as well. This would mean that
you could have your firewire card, your DVD controller, your OrangeMicro
card, your USB card, and still have room to attach another 3 - 8 monitors to
one machine. Sounds too good to be true, but is it? :-)
Sincerely,

Subject: [Q] PowerBook 540c and date
My friend Kim bought a PowerBook 540c when they were new. She has ALWAYS
had a problem with the date on this PowerBook. I, of course, suggested
the battery and take it in for service while under warranty. She took it
in, and said the techs had it open and tinkered, and that batteries (PB
battery and the bitty internal battery) are fine. So, since it's had this
problem since it was new, and the batteries are good according to all
tests, we don't think the answer to this problem is "battery" -- as is so
common to a date problem.
Symptom: If she shuts down, and leaves the PowerBook off for more than a
day, she loses time. It used to go back to (she thought) April 1st, 1901,
but I convinced her that it could have be that 01/01/1904 date. Then I
taught her how to do a clean install (to System 7.5 with Update 2.0 for a
result of System 7.5.3). After that point, the date would reset to
04/25/1972 at 2:43 PM. Both before and after the clean install, she would
occasionally get a date around 1940 or 1945 -- she doesn't remember, but
it's always the same apparent date (within limits of her memory). Her
PowerBook is almost always plugged in at work, or sometimes at home. She
rarely uses the battery alone.
So, does anyone else have any ideas what would cause this behavior? I'm
out of ideas. TIA,
- Joni

I am working on a project which involves porting Linux-PPC to a PowerPC

It occurred to me that a dual-port SCSI disk would serve to transfer
applications and data from a development Power Macintosh running Linux
to the semi-embedded system.
Has anybody ever heard of such a disk -- better yet, has anybody used
one? Please mail directly to me; no use cluttering up the Digest.

There seem to be dozens of font display programmes all of which do
different things other than the thing I want!
Can someone direct me to a programme which will print out the font name

There are lots of programmes that let me print unusual characters and whole

If people Email me privately I'll post a summary if any-one else is at all

Hi, can you use the LaserJet 6 printer on a Macintosh? I know you can if
you use Infowave's PowerPrint, however does one NEED to purchase PowerPrint?
In other words, can the LaserJet 6 printer be used as is with a Mac (I'll be
using it on a Quadra 800, no network). By the way, if I were to use a
package like PowerPrint, would the LaserJet 6P printer give me good output?
Do you think I should also consider Stylescript?

Subject: my friend has a small (OK, so maybe it's NOT so small) problem...
Folks:
A friend of mine just got a VERY nice PowerBook Duo 280c from a corporate
auction, and he got a great deal on it. Unfortunately, he didn't get the
dock OR the floppy drive for the thing, so he has no CONVENTIONAL means
of transferring files. Just recently, however, we started transferring
files via modem.
Last night, in about two hours, I sent him the System Folder off of the
OS 8 disk that he also got at the auction. When he tried to replace the
PowerBook's System 7.5.3 Folder with the Mac OS 8 one, he restarted, only
to get that horrid flashing "?" floppy icon.
Now, my question is this: with absolutely NO means of starting up from
another volume, what is the next step he should take? Is there a cable
available that attaches to that long, thin, weird-lookin' port on the
back of the Duos that can be connected to a Zip drive? Is there some
type of key-combination he should hold down during startup? What is the
answer to this one?
thanks, on his behalf,
Sincerely,
Mark Fiske

Subject: Need help with seemingly Finder-related CD-R burning problem
Fellow software creators ...
(Reply to: desmail@hyperion.com )
I've been experiencing a frustrating problem with burning hybrid ISO/HFS
data CD-Rs on the Mac for several years and I'm looking for a solution or
explanation. Mac software creators should readily understand the behavior
I'm looking for my CD-R to exhibit. To give a simple example, when you do a
Put Away on a floppy, whatever folders on that floppy that were open when
you did the Put Away will re-open whenever you re-insert that floppy. This
works flawlessly with floppies. With CD-Rs, however, I can't seem to get
this behavior reliably. In general, I know that I must have the folder from
within the HFS partition open when I burn the CD-R, but I can't find a way
to make it happen everytime. The following things *can* help before burning
the CD-R, but nothing has proven to be sure-fire: rebuilding the desktop,
restarting the machine, re-opening the folder, waiting a long time for the
Finder's latency, clicking on the folders, etc. It happens with GEAR and
with Toast. It happens with HP burners and with S&F burners. I discovered
today that it might additionally have something to do with the version of
the OS. I created a CD-R today whose folder would open on a System 8
machine, but not on 2 different System 7 machines I tried. Personally, I
think it's a Finder bug. Anyone have a response? Much appreciated! Reply

Subject: Plain Talk, Speech Recognition and a PC Card modem
I just discovered and installed Plain Talk 1.5 on my PowerBook
Great software and the idea of speech recognition in a useful
manner is cool!
The problem I have however is that whenever I use my PC card
modem the Sound-in setting changes from "Built-in microphone" to
"PC-Card" or sometimes to none. So every time I connect to the
internet I have to reset the Monitors and Sound control panel.
It makes using Speech recognition very cumbersome.
Does anyone have any recommendations as to how I can keep this
from happening. Or maybe even a way to correct the problem via
apple script. (Does Applescript have access to
"sound-in"options? I'm unfamiliar with it, but willing to
learn.)
Any advice or recommendations are really appreciated.
