MiniWin 3.4 Demo

Requirements:
Power Macintosh
System 7.5 or greater
If you would like to have small windows with quickly identifiable icons on
your screen, instead of a bunch of look-alike collapsed window titlebars,
then MiniWin is for you!! It consists of two INITs that you simply drop
into your System folder.
The Demo version will show you how MiniWin can make your life easier by
giving you more screen space when you need it. No need to close or move
windows! No need to hunt for the right titlebar! WOW!! Who could ask for
more??
If you like what you see, you may purchase the full version, which is a
self-contained control panel, for the paltry sum of $20.00. Upgrades are
free to registered users! See the Read Me file for the details on the
extras you get when you purchase the full version. Thank you for trying
MiniWin.

OS 8.1 to OS 7 List Views
v1.0, January 20th, 1998
What Is It?
OS 8.1 to OS 7 List Views is a ResEdit resource that you can paste into
your OS 8.1 Finder to make it use the same list order as OS 7 did. In OS
7.x, List View fields were ordered File Name, Size, Kind, Label, and then
Date Modified. I liked this much better because you could see the important
info (Size, Kind, Label) without widening your window to fill half the
screen. In OS 8.1, the relatively useless Date Modified field comes before
Size, Kind, Label necessitating the wider window views. Requires OS 8.1 and
ResEdit.

Objective Software announces the maintenance release of PrintGuard 1.0.5.
* Version 1.0.5 (98/01/19)
- added the possibility to reverse the function of PrintGuard. You now have
two choices:
1- display a message to alert the user that an expensive printer is
currently selected (primary function). The current selected Printer is
*equal* (=3D) to one of the two printer names.
2- or display a message to alert the user that the currently selected
printer is not the good one and that he *must* select another one with the
Chooser. The currently selected printer is *different* (=82) from either of
the two printer names.
PrintGuard - a control panel to alert users trying to print on previously
identified network printers. Useful for your company, university,
cybercafe, wherever there are free access computers with network printers.
Imagine your network includes a dye sublimation printer and somebody tries
to use it to print a 300 pages manual... and just think how much this will
cost you! PrintGuard will warn this thoughtless user that the printer
he/she chose is an expensive one to use.
With the 1.0.5, you can also display a message to alert the user that the
currently selected printer is not the good one and that he *must* select
another one with the Chooser.

This sounds like you have a failing component, maybe the HD, maybe the
HD controller maybe a component on the logic board. A service technician
will probably be able to tell you more. In the mean-time don't turn the
machine off and MAKE GOOD BACKUPS! Failures have a high probabilty of

Quentin:
It may be something as simple as a corrupt desktop file which needs
rebuilding. Try restarting while holding down the option and command
keys simultaneously (command=apple on some keyboards). You'll eventually
get a dialog box that says something like "you really wanna do this?"
Click "yes" and the rebuild should proceed by itself. If all goes well
you should get the computer back. No telling what is still *on* the
computer since the system has been reinstalled, but something is better
than nothing, as they say.
The only other thing I can think of at the moment is that PRAM might
be whacked. Again while restarting, press command-shift-P-R
simultaneously until you hear the startup chimes strike a couple of
times. See what you get. This action does reset many control panels to
factory defaults, so there may be some minor tweaking to do after.
Good luck.

You could write an AppleScript for StuffIt Deluxe that would compress multiple
items into separate archives, or however you would like StuffIt to do it.
StuffIt Deluxe is very scriptable.

Mike, have you asked your ISP if it supports Rockwell-chip 56k (flex)
modems like your Hayes Accura? If your ISP uses only USRobotics X2 56k
modems, they won't connect to your Hayes at anything higher than 33.6kbps.
Some ISPs offer different phone numbers for X2 versus flex modem users.
Good luck.
Ted Logan
P.S. I got up to FreePPP 2.6.1b6 and have stopped there happily, but it
wouldnt hurt for you to upgrade to whatever version they're up to now. I,
too, started having problems around the time of FreePPP 2.5v3 when I got my
new (USR56kX2) modem, so maybe that's part of it. Unfortunately, I've made
so many changes since then I can't say what fixed what anymore./Ted

Subject: [Q] Mac OS 8.1 Update kit
Hi Mike,
I read your post in info-mac.
I succesfully updated to 8.1 on both a Motorola Starmax 3000 (180 Mhz
603e) and a Performa 476 (25Mhz, 68LC040) Mac. I used the 13 part file to
do so.
The part one of 13 file is a little larger and of a different icon than
the others, as it is a "self mounting" disk image. You do not need to
lauch disk copy (any version, though version 4 is history) at all. It
will self mount a disk image and access all of the other parts as needed,
automatically. I ran the update from another drive on the performa, and
the same drive on the powerpc. Both worked flawlessly.
Be sure to backup, rebuild the desktop, and check your disk (Norton or
disk first aid, etc.) first. Then restart using apple's extension manager
set to MacOS8 base. (If you use Conflict catcher, I suggest that you
disable it for this and then put it back.)
When you double click on the part 1 of 13, a dialog progress bar should
appear verifying the checksum, etc. and then it will mount to your
desktop and open a window with the install (or update) icon and some read
mes. Double click on the install (update) icon, and away you go.
If you want to see what has been updated and untouched by the updater. Go
into your system folder first (before the update). Set one of your
finder's labels to something like system as of "current date" or whatever
and label everything. After the update, anything that still has your
label has been untouched and anything that was updated (overwritten) will
have no label.
Good luck, (it worked fine for me)

Double-clicking on the "smi" ("Self-Mounting Image") file should
automatically assemble the 13 pieces into a single image (not 13 floppy
images). The "zero K needed, zero K available" message is an almost certain
sign that one of the 13 files, the smi file in all likelihood, is damaged.
By the way, although the method is similar, Disk Copy won't work on this
file.
I'd suggest you test the integrity of the data in these files, perhaps with
ResEdit or other such utility, and download once again whatever is found to
be damaged. If you have a fast connection, just re-download the whole
shebang from an authorized source.

I don't understand Disk Copy any better than you do, probably not as well,
but most of my similar problems have been solved with Disk Copy 6.1.3.
I recently downloaded the new Quick Time disk image (9MB). After decoding,

[Q]
I have isolated a conflict via Conflict Catcher 4.1 on a Motorola Starmax
3000/180 (603e ppc) with the Quicktime extension group. At Ease 3.03 is
used on this computer. Since the MacOS 8.1 upgrade, if I insert a
diskette or zip disk, the active application will quit unexpectedly. If
in the finder, the finder quits and I drop back into At Ease. If the QT
group is disabled, the behavior disappears. Interestingly, this problem
does NOT occur on my 68LC040 Mac with At Ease 3.03 and OS 8.1, so seems
to be only on the power mac. This is not a problem with MacOS 8.0.
Any one else with this problem? Could there be another explanation. It
sure is a nusaince not being able to have QT installed. (I didn't isolate
which of the QT extensions it is, but on my 68K machine I don't bother
loading the QTMPEG extension, so perhaps that is the issue)
Thanks for any help, email accepted.

I recently got a second monitor for my Mac and hooked it up with an old

still looks washed out. Adjusting the brightness and contrast of the
monitor itself also don't do any significant good.

As of right now, the only control packages for USR Sportster Voice modems
that I have found are MegaPhone and MCC Voice (which ship with the product.)
What I am looking for is either:
* enough control information to create a driver that will allow the following
* a desktop application that answers the phone when you click on it.
Nothing fancy, but real useful.

Subject: Apple Express Modem prob
I recently aquired a Duo Dock 230 and have been trying to setup my
Internet connection. I've installed all the necessary software (MacTCP,
FrePPP, ect.) yet my modem does not respond. I've tried numerous modem
inits and still nothing.
I get an error message that reads: "PPP wait
timout while waiting for 'OK.'" I'm positive there is something wrong with
the modem because I hooked up my old modem and it works (hence me typing
this message).
Anyway, does anyone have any advice? I've checked about
everything twice, but the damn modem will not even give me a dial tone. I
am not a regular subscriber so if you could please send me directly I
would greatly appreaciate it.

Subject: Desktop Printer Error
To the Info-Mac Community,
I have been experiencing a slight problem within the past few weeks.
Upon startup of my computer, at the end of the boot sequence I get the
following error message:
Desktop printer unknown error "-192" at '18'
Clicking the OK box removes the message, and allows me to get on with my
work. I can still print from my various applications with no apparent
difficulty. I am therefore wondering what significance the error message
has since normal printing has not been affected. I would also welcome
suggestions on how to fix/repair any files that might be damaged so that
I will no longer get the annoying dialog box popping up every time I
start my computer.
Additional Information: I have run Norton Utilities 3.5.2 and it has
found no errors. I have also tried running Tech Tool Pro 1.5 with
similar results.

Subject: Getting info off Classic with dead monitor
Friends:
A colleague confronted me with the following challenge: he has a Mac
Classic at home with a dead monitor. (My first Mac was a Classic, he
sniffed wistfully :-) ). He wants to recover some files from the hard drive
before setting the machine out to pasture. What is the best strategy for
achieving this?
He doesn't necessarily want to repair the monitor (unless that is cheap and
easy). He and I discussed schemes for setting up an AppleTalk network
between the Classic and his PowerBook 1400. However, we weren't certain how
to do this without access to the Classic's Control Panels to turn on file
sharing (I think it is running System 7.0.1, or something from that era).
We discussed setting up the Classic as an external SCSI disk for the
PowerBook, but I think that only works in the other direction (i.e. some
PowerBooks have a SCSI disk mode). We even discussed creating a boot disk
with a minimal System that already had filesharing enabled, but couldn't
see a way to implement that.
Any suggestions? Thanks (in advance) for your help!
Kindly "cc:" your responses to me so that I can report to my friend in a
timely fashion.
Best fishes,
Clint

Place all 13 files in one folder. Click on the first image and it will
automatically launch the update. You should only have OS 8 extensions
loaded.
Also mine were on a separate partition. Don't know if this is necessary.

Subject: Mangia - exporting recipes
I'm posting this here because I know that Mangia has been discused in this
forum in the past. For those of you who don't know, it's a cooking/recipe
database, basically, with one of the best interfaces of this kind of
program that I've seen.
I've used it happily for some years, but have been experiencing lots of
crashes under OS8, making the program pretty much unusable. Problem is
that, over the years, I've added a lot of my own recipes to the database,
which I can no longer access. I would like to be able to export these from
Mangia to a FileMaker Pro database, but there is no import/export option
available within Mangia, and FMPro does not recognise Mangia "cookbooks" as
database files.
I've tried contacting Sierra software (who bought Mangia from Steve
Upstill, the author) but they are unable/unwilling to help, and I haven't
been able to get hold of Steve Upstill, who has been extremely responsive
to questions in the past.
So, to (finally!) get to the point - can anyone suggest a work-around so
that I can get my recipes out of Mangia ? I do not know if Steve based the
program on an existing database, or if he wrote the whole thing from
scratch. One thing that occurs to me is if it would be possible, instead of
printing a recipe, to be able to "print" it to a text file (analogous to
what things like like print-to-pict do) - that way I could at least,
laboriously, get them into FMPro one at a time.
TIA

Subject: OpenTransport 1.3/OS 8.1 bug (Q)
Dear Digest readers,
Here's the situation. I just upgraded to MacOS 8.1. I try
visiting http://www.lycos.com, one of the oldest internet search engines
out there. Netscape Communicator 4.0.4 has 17MB of RAM in its Finder Get
Info box, and the Finder has another 68MB free. No Virtual Memory, No RAM
Doubler, No Speed Doubler, no RAM Charger. Desktop has been rebuilt, PRAM
just zapped three days ago. Netscape's preferences has image loading
off, Java and Javascript are off, and Cookies are off. Yet when I visit
Lycos, Netscape simply bombs out with a Type 2 error. This has only
happened with Lycos, and no other applications are running. Netscape
appears to load the site just fine, as I see it counting up the K it has
downloaded, and then when it begins to format the page, nothing has
appeared yet is when it crashes. This is right after a cold reboot. I am
also using the OpenTransport/PPP 1.0.1 dialer.
OK, so I download Conflict Catcher 4.1 as OS 8.1 the upgrader recommends
after seeing that I formerly had Conflict Catcher 4.0. Scan my startup
files using the new Conflict Catcher and it tells me all of my
OpenTransport Shared libraries are damaged, the TCP/IP control panel is
damaged, the Chooser is damaged, and the AppleTalk Control Panel is
damaged. So did Apple by mistake put on its ftp.info.apple.com upgrades
site (where I downlaoded the 16MB upgrader from) an upgrader whose files
were damaged? Could anyone else care to run the Conflict Catcher 4.1 Scan
Startup Files menuitem and see if their's are damaged too?
Any way to determine what kind of damage it is?
Is it in any way connected to the fact I can't get Lycos properly loaded on
Netscape?
Now normally these upgraders have a clean install option. I couldn't find
it on the net install version. Anybody know where it is?
Also I thought the upgrade included MRJ 2.0, which I can't find anywhere
from what was installed. Yet Apple's web site says it is part of the OS.
Are they suggesting I download it separately? It seems obsurd to have to
download a huge upgrade file, and not get the full upgrade as it would come
on CD-ROM.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
abrody@smart.net

Subject: Spigot VDIG won't load on IIsi
Hello. I need some technical advice:
I want to use a VideoSpigot for CU-SeeME but can't get the VDIG to load.
I've got the following setup:
VideoSpigot Nubus card
Mac IIsi 9 Meg (clock chipped to 25 Mhz)
Quicktime 1.0, 1.5, 1.6, 1.6.1
Spigot VDIG (1.0), VDIG1.5b18
System 7.0.1, 6.0.8
ScreenPlay 1.2.2
The ScreenPlay software shows that the Spigot Hardware is working fine.
Video appears in the window and is recordable. My problem is strictly
with the VDIG not loading at startup.
I've tried just about all combinations of the above software. I read
that SpigotVDIG is supposed to go with Quicktime 1.0 and VDIG1.5 goes
with Quicktime1.5. It didn't matter. I tried using system 6.0.8 freshly
installed. I even tried switching the upgraded oscillator back to the
original 20MHz processing speed in case timing was at fault..
Every time I start up the Mac, the VDIG icon comes up CROSSED OUT.
I'm pretty frustrated by now and have run out of my own ideas and resources.
I'd really appreciate hearing some other people's suggestions.
Is anyone using a Spigot on a IIsi with success?
Thanks in advance for your help,

Subject: two questions
Hello all,
I have two questions. The first one is that as the Mac tech support guy at
my local ISP the occasional oddball question comes up for which I have no
direct experience. I was hoping someone else could educate me or point me
in the direction of further information. The situation is that a client
wants to set up a firewall on the Mac. He's currently connected to an
ethernet network and the firewall would require the use of a second
ethernet card. How is this best implemneted? Is there specialized software
that would be needed so that both cards would be recognized?
The second one is that I'm looking for a shareware program that would
record a quicktime movie of my cursor movements/actions so that I can
design a better Macintosh Help Section for my employer. I tried a quick
search on my own but I must not be using the correct keywords. I do seem to
recall that there was at least one shareware program that did just what I'm
looking for, but I don't recall the name.

Au Contraire one of the best reasons for upgrading to OS 8.1 is support for
Win95 long file names. I just copyied a folder full of .html files to a
(preformatted) MeSsy DOS floppy, walked down the hall to a Win95
workstation and all the names are preserved! :-)

I don't think your control panels are scriptable with AppleScript. I would
use KeyQuencer from Binary Software and write a Macro to do it. If you get
the full commercial version of KeyQuencer you can create applets that you
can put in the Startup Items folder and then the macro will do what you
want it to do when it loads.

but satisfaction brought it back.
