disk space
Digital Diary=81 allows you can keep track of many on-going and complex
projects, with fingertip access to the current status of each one.
Projects can be arranged in up to 50 main categories. Or if you prefer,
you can use the category level for your projects, and use the next level
down for detailed project subcategories. You can even arrange your
projects over several separate copies of Digital Diary to add yet another
level to your project hierarchy.
Digital Diary=81 employs a double entry method, which records all notes i=
n
both a Day File as well as a Project File. A third location, the 'To Do
List', is reserved for certain types of notes that require future follow
up, such as appointments and project deadlines. Digital Diary=81 ships with
note types arranged in two groups. The first group is set to be recorded in
the To Do List as well as the Project File and Day File. Note types can be
changed, added, or removed at any time. An on-screen reminder appears when
the program is opened on or after the date specified for a future event
listed in the 'To Do List'. Each project can also be assigned a status from
a user-definable menu.
A wide variety of reports can be generated, with information arranged by
project name, status, or note type. Varying levels of password protection
are available to control access to the program.
Here are a few of the many uses of Digital Diary=81:
Business, Sales, and Consulting:
* Project activities and decisions
* Upcoming deadlines, meetings, and appointments
* Telephone and meeting records
* Discussions with suppliers, consultants, clients and co-workers
* Decisions made and communicated to clients, co-workers, and subordinates
* Directions received from clients, authorities, and management
* Decision / activity 'streams' relating to issues within a project

Here's something I put together after many months of frustration:
I had this problem (green/yellow-flashing, blue-hued 15" multiscan)
solved--after much aggravation--and thought I ought to help out others who
are going through the same thing. So I wrote this (rather long) FAQ.
First, the problem is related to bad soldering causing the red gun to go
out. It's better explained on several Mac sites, including Macintouch
. It is a very common defect
and if your monitor has it it can't be repaired, only replaced. But the
good news is, if you have a 15" multiscan monitor that flashes
green/yellow/pink/whatever, Apple will replace it for free. For some reason
this policy is not being publicly announced, leaving a lot of people
frustrated. But you WILL get a replacement, in or out of warranty, with all
shipping paid by Apple. Just don't look for Apple Online Tech Support to
clue you in about it .
Call Apple. The way to get through is to call Customer Relations, or Apple
Repair Center in Memphis, 800-233-6555, at which a human answers right away
(no voice mail!!!). In any case, you'll have to get transferred to someone
in Tech Support. Tell TS plainly you have a 15" multiscan with the color
drop-out problem and you need a case number for a replacement. They are
very familiar with the situation. You will be asked a few questions to
establish it indeed has the problem. Be pleasant; from this point it's
going to be easy and you are nearly there. To expedite matters and avoid
having to call back again, do the following tests first so that you can say
they didn't work:
Check that the monitor cable connection is secure.
Try the monitor with another computer.
Zap the PRAM.
Re-synch the monitor.
You will get a case number (write it down and keep it!) and be transferred
to another line, where the replacement will be arranged. Have a credit card
number ready as you will have to guarantee $300 against returning the
defective monitor. You will NOT be charged anything, including shipping, as
long as you return the old monitor within 5 business days.
Apple will send you a refurbished 15" Multiscan within 2 days, usually
overnight. Return the old one using this box (prepaid shipping forms will
be enclosed.) The replacement monitor comes with a 90-day guarantee.
This should be the end of the story. In my case, the replacement was also
defective, with blue and red stripes at the bottom of the screen. So were
the second, third and fourth (skewed image, loud popping noises and screen
going black without warning, cracked case, you name it. I began to wonder
if they'd been refurbished in the first place.) Asking Apple Repair Center
to check the monitor before sending it didn't seem to help, and one
monitor's problem of arbitrarily turning itself off only showed up after a
week of use. But the point is, once you've received a replacement, each one
is guaranteed for 90 days. And unlike the Blue Hue Issue, if defective
these monitors will be replaced without mystery or fuss until you're
absolutely satisfied. Eventually my case had a good outcome & I've just
about forgiven Apple for being so darned evasive about the Blue Hue Issue
in the first place .
Hope this helps, and good luck
-fletcher

One of my facutly has been having a problem with MSWord 5.1a and a
PowerMac 6116CD (System 7.5 vanilla as far as I know). This is at her
home so I can't go see what's what.
When typing a document, the menus will jump off the side of the screen
(the apple, File, and Edit menus disappear). Restarting fixes the
problem.
She, of course, can't tell me what she did to make this happen.
Word is all she uses so I can't find out if this is limited to Word or
not.
Ideas?

Dear Jerry:
This was a problem with 7.5 and early PPCs. Apple released an alert
about the Menu shift and supplied a fix in the 7.5.1 upgrade which was
not a total fix and then System 7.5.3 provided a fix. Upgrade to
something later than 7.5 or get Apple Menu Option 1.0.2
See Apple note below
Blessings.

Apple Menu Options
Apple Menu Options is updated with System 7.5.1, but glitches and
incompatibilities with third-party menu enhancers may remain, and
users
still report menus shifting off the menu bar with the 7.5.1
version.
Use Extensions Manager (or the trash) if you want to disable AMO.
Apple subsequently released the post-7.5.1 Apple Menu Options
1.0.2 to
fix the menu problems

Good luck finding one, I don't think has been a new AppleScript book
printed in a year or two. You can find most changes to AS in Sys8 at Bill
Cheeseman's site:
http://oasis.bellevue.k12.wa.us/cheeseb/
He also has a great bunch of starting links to get you to more AS stuff.
>2. Can I set the desktop printer default at startup using a script.

For this you will have to install one of the printer Osaxen's, you should
be able to find links to the Geae archive on Bill's site, and once there
look under the AppleScript/Osaxen directory. I think one is called
UsePrinter.
>3. Can I set caps lock to off at startup using a script or other means.
> Caps lock intereferes with passwords and catches students out.
Can't defeat that unless you can have a little robot that you can script to
press the key. What you could do is have the script display a dialog box
telling the user to make sure the Key cap key is not down.
display dialog "Please make sure the Caps Lock Key is not down" default "Ok"
should do it I think

an INIT or Control panel conflict, is present on 68X and PPC Macs. The bug

Subject: Quadra 840 deceased?
Hello,
Disaster has struck upon my Quadra 840 av yesterday.
In short: a freeze, a restart, startup chime but no video-the harddrive
spins idly-exit quadra. I was not doing anything special other than having
Disk First Aid check out the harddrive. The last thing I installed was
Microsoft Office, but hey, that was three days ago, and we can't blame
Muckrosoft for everything can we.
I have tried:
checking the HD on another Mac (it was fine) removing the two nubus
cards, booting from: 3 other HD's, two different CD's (7.5 & 7.6.1),
floppies (7.1 & 7.5): no go.Disassembling the Mac completely, cleaning
the motherboard, simms etc. with special spray, taking the battery out
again for 8 hours, replacing it even though the battery is perfectly OK,
testing each individual Simm-boink, but no bootup.
Kicking he Mac-that relieved some of my frustration
Set up a SCSI conflict with the CD and two harddrives at SCSI 3 to make
this machine realize that there is something wrong here- nothing
happened. No "sad mac", no special chimes, no sign of life but the hardrive
spinning idly.
If anybody out there has any idea what the problem might be, or how to
spot if this really is a hardware problem, I 'd be very grateful for any
input.
As you may well imagine, I am rather desperate-the II cx I borrowed for
now works, but my real work can only be done on the 840AV.
Also, if anybody has a Quadra 800, 840 av, or PPC 8100 or 8500
logicboard for sale, consider me game (private email please)
Again, thanks a kabillizisigavillion in advance for any comments, advice or
tips on how to bring this good old workhorse back online!
Thanks,
Wout.

When linking into the internet I usually tap into a second phone line
as my business line is too costly. However, due to my forgetful
nature, I often forget to switch back when I'm done and shut down the
system. Is there a way to create a file that will put a mesage on the
screen when I shut down to remind me to switch back, as well as maybe
some other reminders? I've tried writing one in several apps, but it
has to open the app, which takes time and then only displays for a
split second. Since there are startup screens, are there any
modifiable shut down screens? I'm using a Performa 6205 with system
v7.5.
Thanks for any assistance.

Subject: Sick SCSI Port Part 2
In a message in Digest #1 (which I didn't receive via e-mail, so I'm not sure
was distributed anyway), I wrote:

I haven't received any replies, but there is some more information: I looked
at the underside of my motherboard and there is a build-up of what appears to
be oxidation on some of the solder joints. If this is causing the problem, is
there anything I can do to clean off this crud without damaging the rest of
the board? I'd really like to avoid purchasing a new computer or having to
work with one which may crap out more completely at any moment.
Thanks,

Subject: Word Macro Viruses Hit Office 98?
This morning I got up close and personal with the Word 6 Concept macro
virus for the first time. What a waste of time!
It seems as if I recall that Microsoft says you can't turn off macros in
Word 6 (although their anti-virus patch does just that, one file at a
time). Like many, I never use macros and would prefer that they be disabled.
Does anyone know if you can turn off macros in the version of Word that
comes in Office 98?
