Subject: [*] Gif.gIf.giF (68K)1.2.4J - Japanese Version
This is the Japanese version of Gif.gIf.giF. This version is designed for
68K machines.
Gif.gIf.giF is a simple program for producing GIF animations, and may be
used to quickly produce animated demonstrations of software that can be
placed on the web. The animations are viewable with Netscape Navigator 2 and
the Macintosh version of Microsoft Internet Explorer without add-ons,
plug-ins, or helper applications.
Gif.gIf.giF can produce small animated GIF files since the GIF standard
allows for an animation to describe only the changes between frames, rather
than entire frames. Placing animated GIF files on web pages does not require
CGI or JAVA programming, and does not require special HTTP servers.
Changes in version 1.2.4J
- Bug fix: improved the interface appearance on systems using black and
white displays and MacOS 8. Some windows had black backgrounds, making it
difficult to see and use controls.
- Bug fix: animations captured using an unregistered version of the program
with the display set to fewer than 256 colours could produce GIF files that
were slightly corrupted.

PlayerPRO is a complete music editor software (SoundTracker). You can
use it with any Macs without any specific hardware. PlayerPRO can load
and play following formats: MOD, S3M, Midi, MTM, MADx, OKTA, System 7
sound, MINS, WAV, XI, AIFF, AIFC, MED, 669, IT, ULT and XM.
What is a SoundTracker?
Still uncommon on Macintosh, these music utilities originated on the
Amiga platform, and have then been developed on the Atari ST, IBM PC,
and finally on Macintosh. These soundtrackers are based on a single file
system: the MOD format and its derivatives. The MOD format was intended
to be a compact way of storing music inside games and demos, especially
background music. The files consist of "patterns" of musical notes
inside "partitions" (pattern lists) which can be played in different
order, and more than once. (The number of tracks simulates the number of
musicians a conductor would have in his orchestra; in the case of a 4
track file, the conductor has only the possibility of having 4
instruments playing simultaneously, even when the players can change
their instruments).

Description:
SET is a game with 81 cards. Every card represents 1, 2 or 3 identical
symbols characterized by different properties like the colour, the shape,
the pattern and the number of the symbols. You have to build up a set by
choosing 3 of the 16 visible cards so that every property is either
identical or completely different for each card. For example: the colours
of the 3 cards must be either the same or completely different. And so on
for the other three properties.
Does this sound too complicate? Just have a look at it, and you will soon
be addicted to SET!
Available in english, german and french!

VCD Player simplifies the process of playing video compact discs on your
Mac. With most other players, you only get video in a tiny area of your
screen, or in an area surrounded by a huge border of some sort. VCD
Player smoothes the video playback process and allows you to watch
full-screen movies in the MPEG format, without any headache-inducing
distortion to make the movie unwatchable. There are various configurable
options that control sound and playback, and just as with a sound-only CD
player, you can control which track to start watching.
System Requirements
- Power Macintosh
- QuickTime 2.5 or later
- QuickTime MPEG Extension 1.0 or later
What's new in 1.4.5?
- VCD Player now can remember where you stopped, after you quit the
program,
restarted your mac, or even changed to another disc then changed back.

Subject: (Q) PB3400 and Umax Astra 600S
Welcome back from X-mas!
Netters, I hope that you can help out with a problem I've been having the
last few weeks; and shame on me: I haven't been thinking of info-mac until
during those restful Christmas days...
My problem is getting a Umax Astra 600S to work with a PowerBook 3400:
* SCSI Probe (the trusty old 3.5) does normally not 'see' the scanner
It just finds SOMETHING on the scanner's address (and yes: I have tested
different addresses)
* the VistaScan appl that comes with the scanner indentifies the scanner
as an Astra 600S - and displays the current SCSI address correctly as well
* it is most of the time possible to make a 'preview' - but not a scan;
when trying to scan the program will not find anything on the SCSI chain
* it makes no difference with an Apple active terminator
* any other SCSI unit seems to work; it is even possible to start from an
external hard disk (snaps in before the internal IDE disk, even!)
* the scanner is visible (with SCSI Probe) from another Mac - it is
identified correctly as well
Macfixit has no clues; the only 'look-alike' concerns 54xx-64xx and timing
problems on the SCSI chain - but I don't dare to apply that one.
Our reseller has not been able to help, neither the Swedish distributor -
and my mail to support@umax.com has gone unanswered this far (the mail was
sent Dec 17 or thereabouts).
Hoping for the best

Actually, while working at a home-based business one summer
which employed a variety of Macs, I did observe strange watch
behavior on the Mac Portable I was assigned to (The original
Mac Portable, 68000, non-backlit screen). I noticed that
the watch hour and minute hands did move as mentioned above
in all sorts of situations under System 6.0.x. But when the
same applications were used on my supervisors's IIci running
on System 7.0, the hour hand didn't move.
As for why they changed this between System 6 and 7, I have
no idea...perhaps it bogged-down performance and they just got
rid of it to free up some much needed CPU cycle time...and
then when Macs eventually ran System 7 efficiently on 030
and 040 processors, the software engineers forgot all about it!
Hmm...something to really think about for a change!

I wondered if anyone else had experienced problems playing "CD Extra" CDs
under OS8? On my 7200, TWO icons of the CD mount on my desktop, the CD
won't eject unless I trash both of them, the CD won't autoplay, and
launching an application stops a track playing in the background. I do
get an offer from AOL in a window that automatically opens when the CD
mounts, but I could live without it cluttering my desktop. Will updating
my CD driver help? If not, could someone pass this along to Apple?

Subject: [Q] software to sync files on two Macs?
I want to automatically backup software files on a server to an off-site
hard drive.
I want this to automatically happen in the background when the server is
somewhat idle. Basically I want the software to look at the server hard
drive and if a file changes, to copy it to the remote hard drive. The
remote hard drive could be on a Mac or Unix or NT system but in the scheme
of things, it is just a hard drive on the network.
Apple has a File Syncronization Control Panel (beta software) that ships on
the developer CDs and that meets my needs perfectly EXCEPT that it has a
memory leak and eventually crashes the server. It can even backup files
that are being used by the server.
I presume such software exists for PowerBooks that I could use on my servers.
I'd really like for this software to sync the hard drives via TCP/IP rather
than AppleTalk but if the best software uses AppleTalk, I can adapt things
to use AppleTalk for this specific purpose.
Any suggestions?
I have tried Retrospect and it does not meet my needs. It is geared for
backups of client machines when they are being shut down and that rarely
happens on my servers. Plus with a human has to restart the server when the
backup is complete, also not acceptable.
Thanks in advance,

No keyboards have batteries. The button (it's actually called the "power"
button) does not get power from a battery. The entire keyboard receives
power through the ADB port on your Mac, even when the Mac is shut down.
So when the keyboard is not plugged into the ADB port, there is no power
coursing through it, except possibly a tiny bit which has been stored up
in the capacitors.

Well, how come I see this then :-) ? I use Emailer 2 and I read the
mailing as we speak. Don't know if it's the same in Emailer 1.1, however,
but it can never hurt to upgrade to 1.1v3 if you haven't already.
Upgrades can be found at:
http://www.claris.com/
Emailer's handling of included MIME is somewhat strange, however: If I
forward a message in Communicator and read it in Emailer, I see it as
several included MIME files (no, not one, that would be too simlpe).
Double-clicking them in the Finder brings them up as standard
"Incomming"-windows. But InfoMac mailings look allright.

Yes, it can. Settings Menu, Preferences and finally TCP control. Supports
OT/PPP, FreePPP and MacPPP as a standard - others can be downloaded from

responses to my postings. They came at a time when I was extremely busy so
I simply saved all the messages to a folder, not realizing until I finally
got back to deal with them last week that the way I was saving the messages
lost the header information. Thus I had no way to send an e-mail of thanks

I have replied privately to those who did and I want to publicly thank

for having to take bandwidth to make up for my failure to check what I was

Subject: Getting rid of Now Utilities
I have been forced to switch to Mac OS 8 and can thus not use Now Utilities
any more. I have tried to find other software to replace Now Utilities, and
have found the following:
BeHierarchic provides hierarchical menu searching, but only one menu (the
apple menu), Now Utilities allowed me to have many menus for different
purposes (templates, applications, files, etc.)
SearchFiles searches for files by content, but cannot combine content and
other file properties, like search for fiels with a certain string in the
file name and then search the content of the found files.
I have not found any replacement for the very useful Now SuperBoomerang,
which adds command to the normal file-opening dialogue to go directly to
recently accessed files and folders.
ConflictCatcher replaces Now Startup Manager.
Can anyone advice me on how to get the things I lack. Most important for me
is a replacement for Now SuperBoomerang, but also better alternatives to
BeHierarchic (allowing more than one user-customisable menu) and
SearchFiles (allowing more complex search conditions) would be very useful.
Send your replies both to the list and to me personally, since my browsing
of the info-mac digests is delayed in time.

Looks like a Type 11 error to me. First, try increasing the memory
partition for the different programs and see if that helps. If it
doesn't, I can't give any other advice than to upgrade to the latest
system version possible, in this case MacOS 8, if 8.1 isn't out when you
read this. 7.6 and 8 are much less prone to Type 11 errors.

hi, everybody.
some microsoft internet mail & news 3.0 questions: (i really don't like
microsoft software, but netscape communicator drove me to it. hooray for
unbundled nav 4!)
1. how can i view binaries in the newsgroups? im&n grabs the image and puts
it into an invisible "temporary items" folder which i can use from the
finder, but gives me no way to view it that i can find in the application.
(and i've already tried all sorts of things in the helper apps prefs.)
2. how can i find the url of a site someone sends me as an enclosure from
navigator? sometimes i would prefer the option of viewing the page in
navigator as opposed to the crippled capabilities of the mail window.
i'm guessing these are those sorts of typical microsoft problems that would
all go away if i converted to the religion entirely, but i think i still
have a little use left in this soul.

Seems like a virtual ID card or something like it. Communicator can add

otherwise trash it.

I can strongly recommend the U.S. Robotics 56k Sportster (external)
Faxmodem with X2 technology -- usually around $170 net ($220 retail less
$50 mail-in rebate). It's flash-ROM upgradeable, which means you'll be
able to upgrade to whatever new standard comes out of the current
technological debates, including even 56k flex (unlikely because I thinki
X2 has already won most of the copper phone line battles). Under no
circumstances should you buy any modem that's not flash-ROM upgradeable.
This is the sixth or seventh USR modem I've owned along with numerous other
brands in 16 years: no problems of any kind, ever, with USRs; others, even
Hayes, not so good except the old Supras (before Diamond: see below).
If you get the USR 56k, use only the recommended AT&F1&D0 initiation string
with your Macintosh. Various modem-string Web sites, including even one I
got through Adam Engst (apologies, Adam), contain a myriad other USR 56k
modem initiation strings, all long and complicated with S-register settings
and so forth, and they're all wrong (one actually disables X2 and 56k
instead of enabling them). Read the USR manual and do exactly what it
says, neither more nor less: unlike some others, U.S. Robotics modems have
always been designed by geniuses to be used by idiots, so K.I.S.S.
Incidentally, the new Supra modems are not like the old ones before Supra
was acquired by Diamond. The main difference is that the new ones are crap.
P.S. No sense using a 56k modem, you're surely aware, if your ISP doesn't
also use them. Always check first with your ISP to make sure your 56k
technology matches theirs. No help to you if you use an X2 modem to
connect to an ISP using Rockwell-chip (56k flex) modems. They don't talk
to each other except at fallback speeds. Fortunately, most upscale ISPs
these days use U.S. Robotics 56k X2 modems exclusively. Even AOL is
wall-to-wall USRs, I think, if you don't mind a spot of damning with faint
praise.
