What is ProMaker? For those who don't know ProMaker yet: ProMaker is a FileMaker Pro productivity shareware tool for enhancing working with ScriptMaker. If you are a FileMaker Pro 3.0 or 4.0 user or developer and write ScriptMaker scripts this small application can save you a lot of time. ProMaker Utils makes it possible to paste an entire ScriptMaker script (all steps) from a TEXT file into a FileMaker Pro script. No more clicking until your hands hurt, just enter them in one go! Also works with almost all international FileMaker versions. New features We have added the following features in this version: - Added support for FileMaker 4.0. - Added Import of Print2Pict text files. - Scriptmaker detects which version of FMP is running (e.g. US/German/etc.), and can paste accordingly. - Added (optional) extra pasting of comment steps in which the names of scripts/layouts/fields is given. How does it work? - Open FileMaker Pro and the script you want to paste the steps in. - Use ProMaker Utils to open a TEXT file with the script-steps in it (some sample text files are included). - Enter the complete script by pressing command-E. System Requirements Macintosh with 68030 or better or Power Macintosh. System 7.1 or later (also tested on the upcoming 8.0 release). ProMaker Utils requires 750 Kb of RAM. ProMaker Utils doesn't use a patch or an extension so no potential conflicts there. Of course you need a copy of FileMaker Pro, this should be version 3.0v4, or an International version. The program keeps a record of exercises, and identifies the words that the student has difficulty with. Along with the program, you need a module for the target language concerned. The program can also be used as an authoring tool to write your own modules of inflected words for any language. A built-in 'inflection-generator' simplifies the addition of these words. A 'Find' feature allows the modules to be used as bilingual dictionaries. Ready-made modules are already available for certain languages. Here is a summary of comments. >1 Is there a Mac admin program for Netware? Our network administrator says >no-but they don't >understand Mac's. No, there is no NWAdmin for the Mac. One respondent noted that the NW Client Installer for the Mac -can- install a Macintosh version of RCONSOLE. It is as useful as the PC version of RCONSOLE. Remote Console, which allows you to view the file server console, runs on Macs. It does not install from NW Client Installer with the Easy Install option, but is there if one chooses a Custom install. The same person also noted (from people he knows who have gone to Novell's BrainShare conference) that Novell is recoding lots of stuff (including NWAdmin) in Java. If that's true, then it won't matter that you have a Mac. See http://yes.novell.com/java/documentation/4620809.htm for details. >2 Would Virtual PC running Win95 allow me to do this one job from my Mac. I have heard of an available database that could possibly be transferred in the form of a preference file, either for a specific app, or via the CD Remote Program in the preference folder. The Energy Saver control panel has quit shutting down my monitor all of a sudden for no particular reason. I just noticed that it stays on all the time. The only things that have changed since it was working before is that I have installed an Apple 233MHz processor card in place of the 132MHz one and I upgraded Apple Remote Access to version 3. This is in a 7600 with a 1705 monitor running OS8 and nothing else special in particular. Anybody have any ideas on this? I left 7.5.5 in tack on my original internal HD I attempted to start up with the internal - as it was progressing it went into a rebuild of the desktop for no reason and then froze. I restarted and cancelled the rebuild - evrything O.K. I did notice that MacLink Plus control panel was now "x" out. I ran Norton's and found a small problem with the Catalog tree which it fixed. Restarted no problems. Ran Norton again. Everthing O.K. I figured I would rebuild to reesatblish MacLink Control panel - It froze again on Rebuild. Restarted. Norton again says o.k. but I still freeze if I rebuild. Odd this would have just happened when I attempted to install OS8 on anothjer external and that MacLink CP would corrupt. Pelletier" about (Q) Mac Based on the question in Digest v15#233 from "Denis M. Pelletier" about (Q) Mac OS 8 and Pegasus Mail 2.21, it might be of interest to other readers to post the following. I already sent a copy to Denis. ########### The following informative message recently appeared on the listserver "owner-evangelist-digest@public.lists.apple.com (EvangeList Digest)". Based several questions that have appeared on these UseNet groups, I asked the author, MATT CHANDRONAIT, to post his information here also. As he doesn't have access to these groups, asked me to post it for him. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Subject: Followup - Novell and MacOS8 This follow-up message is from: MATT CHANDRONAIT, Thanks one and all for the huge stack of messages regarding this issue. I had asked for help from the Evangelistas regarding issues that may have surfaced during the installation of MacOS8 in a Novell(ed) environment. And, surprise surprise, 99% of the messages report a flawless and in most cases improved performance. Here is a list of the reported problems: --- One problem that arose was with the use of the Novell Netware client for the Mac. On some systems it was reported as being unable to recognize the Novell network after installing OS8 (This has to do with MacOS 8 and Netware authentication through the Chooser and compatibility with Open Transport). However, Novell has released an update to the Mac Netware Client - Update to v5.11 - - available for download here: which fixes this problem. Also, the use of the 5.11 client fixes a rather large security hole that has to do with bidery services. - --- Some reported that OS 8 would crash/slow down/give limited use to MS mail for PC networks. - --- One IT Director reported that he had a lot of problems with Novell IPX drivers with Open Transport 1.2 and Token Ring cards - --- One direct incompatibility is that the Pegasus Mail Mac client cannot see the Novell directories under MacOS 8. So if you are trying to use the Novell server as a Pegasus Mail server from the Mac you might have some problems. I saw no mention of and therefore do not know if the Novell Mac Client update (5.11 - see above) fixes this problem or not. As far as directly affecting the Novell Network: The change from Classic Networking to Open Transport was only internal to the MacOS architecture, making it easier for applications to communicate with the network resources on the Mac. This is all _internal_ to the Mac. MacOS 8 is only an improvement on this architecture. All of this being internal means that not only will MacOS 8 not affect your Novell network in any way, but that it CAN'T. Also, it can't affect any of the other systems on your network - be they UNIX, NT, VAX, or if you are running IPX/SPX, Appletalk, SNA, Netbeui, DECnet, LAT & TCP/IP all on the same network. How about some of the other positive statements? - - OS 8 has less "chatty" Appletalk thereby making your company's network faster as a whole if they do not use the Mac Netware client with MacIPX. - - OS 8 works perfectly fine with Novell 3.11 and up! - - OS 8 "... works BETTER with Novell servers than 7.5 or 7.6" - - People from MIT, the Navy, Sierra On-Line, the Australian Government, Novell, Apple, Arco, various college and university IS heads, professors of computer science and information, Westinghouse, and from various other companies and organizations from all over the world claim to have increased performance and satisfaction when dealing with OS 8 and their Novell environments. I even heard from military personnel somewhere in the former Yugoslavia. - - From an Apple Engineer: "I have several very large customer companies who have Mac and PC clients with Novell servers. To name a few, Hughes Aircraft, TRW, JPL, Boeing, and Northrop. "They are all installing MacOS 8 without any problems interfacing with Novell servers being used for file serving, print serving, or application metering. "There is no technical justification for not upgrading Mac clients to MacOS 8." What more justification does one need than that? I hope this helps some of you out there that are in the same predicament I was in - being in a primarily PC environment and trying to convince uneducated network admins to let you install OS 8. Some people just told me to install it behind their backs since they most likely could never tell the difference ;) As a side note, I printed out all of the messages I was sent (some 150-170 of them) and went through them ALL searching for the ones that mentioned problems and incompatibilities. When I was done, I had a stack of **6** that mentioned problems, and a HUGE stack that conveyed the virtues and values of OS 8 in a Novell/Mixed-platform environment. It was very satisfying to drop the two stacks on our Network Operations Manager's desk... one with a light *flip!* and the other with a huge *THUD!* Thanks a thousand times over to all of you out there for the fabulous assistance! Keep the Faith! - -Matt Chandronait Artist/Web Designer & Mac Evangelista to the core Cheers, Hans M.
