Symantec Tech Support Several DOS/Windows gurus have told me Symantec isn't the same outfit it was with Peter Norton, who left not long ago. They have been having problems with Norton Utilities, especially (now removing it from all DOS/Windows systems), which has also been a problem with me in a Macintosh environment. Norton Fastback erased my entire hard disk one day, and an honest Symantec tech support told me I would be better advised to use something else (he recommended Retrospect, which I now use happily). From all this I'd be inclined to assume that I have to start living my life without Symantec. >My current concern relates to Leslye's new Kodak DC50 digital camera. I just bought the Kodak DC50 and have had zero problems with it or the PhotoEnhancer software. I'm using it on a Power Mac 7100/80 running System 7.5.5. Have you tried reinstalling the software? And if you're interested, I ordered the Photoenhancer Plus upgrade ($69) -- not arrived yet. And I'm also using the 4MB SanDisk FlashDisk memory card and the AC power adapter. The 4MB memory card holds 34 "Better" images (64 "Good" or 24 "Best"). But I'm mainly itrigued by their 85MB card (cost unknown but probably beyond me), which is rated at 575 Best images, 863 Better images, and ">999" Good images. Good grief, with a gadget like that I could take pictures forever. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Feb 1997 01:35:11 -0700 From: Kreme Subject: L2 Cache On 2/23/97, Ked Shayer wrote: > Your computr should speed up majorly > > >Recently I added 32MB DIMMs and 256k L2 cache to my 7200 > >machine. Major & Dennis J. Gorin" Subject: Mis-diagnosis with Tech Tool??? I recently installed Open Transport on one of my Macs as well as OT/PPP. Once I was finished the installing and restarted the computer, I ran Tech Tool (latest version) to do a routine System Analysis. To my surprise, it told me that I had a damaged System file and to replace it with a fresh copy. So I did just that. In fact, I went through all the trouble of starting up from another hard disk, trashing the "damaged" System file, doing a clean reinstall to get a "fresh" one, and then proceeded to reinstall Open Transport all over again on top of that (both versions, 1.1.1, then 1.1.2). After restarting the Mac again, I ran Tech Tool once more. It gave me the same diagnosis as before--damaged System file--on this brand new System file. I had experienced no crashes or freezes after installing the new System file, so right now I have absolutely nothing to blame this on. Does O.T. write something to a 68K System file that would make Tech Tool "think" that it is damaged in any way? That's the only answer I can come up with at the moment. If anyone has any other thoughts on this, please email me. Turn off the 'enable fast saves' in the preferences-it's a 'feature' that causes these kinds of problems, as it appends the changed portions of your file to the end of the original document each time you perform a save. john in Sydney jhaywood@laurel.ocs.macq.edu.au ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Feb 1997 14:25:23 -0500 From: Simon Kidd Subject: Symantex's Directory Assistance II At 5.43 pm -0500 22/2/97, Phil Scott wrote: > >If DA-II will no longer work on the newer systems 7.5.3 and above, >what are the alternatives? While I can't help Dave with the part he needs, we're experiencing a similar problem with an Apple Color LaserWriter 16/600. A few weeks ago a warning light came on to announce that the photoconducter cartridge was wearing out. So, I dutifully called Apple supplies to order a new one only to find out that it would be back-ordered until Feb. 21 (The initial call was made in mid January.). At first we were told that it would be shipped overnight (we paid extra), then when it didn't come in the next day (or the next for that matter) we called and were told that whoever told us it was in stock was wrong. It appears that Apple has two problems: one, it can't keep stock on hand, and two, the right hand doesn't know what the left is doing. I agree with Dave: If Apple treats its friends this way, soon it won't have any friends left. I have been an Apple evangelist in our school for ten years. I've converted many. Lately, however, I've begun sounding like a lone voice crying in the wilderness. Charles Pearce, Assoc. Prof. A. Q.
