I bought a crossover cable at the campus computer store fr $6 and it works
like a dream. I transferred all my files in about 10 or 20 minutes (200 megs

Subject: (C) cavaet emptor - Norton Utilities and i-Mac
Dear Digest readers,
Some Mac catalog retailers are offering discounts on Norton Utilities 3.5 if
you purchase an i-Mac
The only problem is that the i-Mac will not run MacOS 8.0 or earlier. It
only runs MacOS 8.1 or later. Norton only works with MacOS 8.0 or earlier.
As such the i-Mac is incompatible with that version of Norton. So if you
are getting the older version of Norton in order to run on the i-Mac, DON'T!
Otherwise your entire hard disk will be erased because Norton can't handle
MacOS 8.1's HFS plus. Norton Utilities 4.0 has come out according to
MacMall's catalog, though I haven't seen any official word on Mac Network
News, or MacWeek about it. That may be i-Mac compatible, but it still
remains to be seen.
In the meanwhile, yes it is worth it to get Micromat's Techtools Pro 2.0 for
$99 if you want to make sure your hard disk stays uncorrupted. Take it from
a long time user of both Norton and Techtools (since 1991).
Sincerely,
abrody@smart.net

Subject: (Q) Netscape and clippings
Anyone know how to create a text clipping out of a Netscape page window?
Netscape is the only application I know where you can't wipe the text you
want, and drag it to the desktop to create a clipping. I don't want the
whole page, just the highlighted text. Surely, either Netscape itself
supports such a function and I don't know the "secret handshake," or maybe
there is a plug-in somewhere to make it happen.
Thanks for the help, gang. Suggestions to switch to IE4 cheerfully ignored.

I will be connecting to an ISP in the same building. I don't wish to

Subject: 1.4M disk images with 800K drives
I am sending this to a subset of the Classic Macs group, rather than
posting to the group itself, because I think this has been addressed
before but not enough detail. Besides, I want to pose this question only
to those group members who have demonstrated sufficient knowlege or
experience on SE related questions in the past:
I have a standard SE with two 800K drives and a 250MB internal HD. Across
the room, my Plus has an external SCSI 50MB HD. On my SE, I have not only
ShrinkWrap 1.3.2 but also DiskCopy 4.2 AND 5.0.
Is there any way I can use either DiskCopy or ShrinkWrap with any of my
current equipment to turn 1.4 MEG disk images into usable applications and
files for my SE? Or, I seem to recall there being a simpler way using
ShrinkWrap without taking the 50MB HD away from the Plus?
Every time I have seen this question addressed, the writer seems to assume
that the reader can also read his mind on a point or two, which ends up
making his advice unusable to the beginner. I just know that one of you
will know the step-by-step procedure...?
My Thanks and Best Regards to You All,

I've been asked by our school's headmaster to find some sort of screensaver
for our machines that will display a *fullsized* clock on all the computer
screens. The goal is that by combining this with having each machine regularly
check in with a timeserver, we'll have synchronized clocks in the school
without having to by a synchronized clock system.
I know that Basic Black will give a *small*, *moving* clock on the screen, but
is there anything that will give a large stationary one. I don't really care
if it's analog or digital, just as long as it does the job.

Subject: [Q] Good disk partitioning sw
Recently I managed to find a G3 Series powerbook. It has a 4G disk which I want to partition. The only partitioning sw I know of is FWB's Hard Disk Toolkit, which I see has the advantage that it is compatible with HFS+.
However, before I rush out and get a copy, I'd like to feel somewhat more informed :-) I'd be grateful for advice/comments/feedback, positive and negative, of FWB and any other disk partitioning sw people have used.
Compatibility with HFS+ is *not* necessary, since I expect to end up with partitions around 1G or smaller, for which the benefit of HFS+ is not nearly so dramatic. However, compatibility with 8.1 would be good, since I believe that 7.X doesn't run on these machines.

Esther Michaels

This all came about when I saw the Classic Macs post about the Acrobat

unstuffed as folders containing the installer, fonts, etc. I am hoping you

I don't know of way for Eudora Pro to display them. Though if you set the
vcard as TEXT you can read the info if you wish.
If you want to get rid of them automatically, you will have to hack
Eudora's EuIM resource with ResEdit. In 4.01 there is a set of items that
are auto deleted, look for "garbage" in the EuIM resource.

In the Mac Mall which came yesterday, there was a small ad for Appleworks

I have used Clarisworks since I converted my home computer from an Apple

had worked very well for me.
A few months ago I got a card from Claris telling me aboutr a clariworks

BBEdit Lite is Freeware.
BBEdit 4.5.x is commercial and there are shareware or freeware plugins for
BBEdit that sort very nicely.
I am not sure if the plugins that I have will all work with the Lite
version. Also the commercial version is scriptable and uses grep.

I don't know of any TEXT editor that does columns very well, but
AppleScript is very versatile and extensible.
There is a Educational Discount for BBEdit and you might check out that.
Also Tex-Edit Plus and Style are Scriptable and shareware and not
expensive. While they don't use grep, there is a osax that will do grep.

Subject: Eudora Attachments
I have encountered a problem with Eudora Light in sending attachments. I
am trying to send various files to be used on PCs and Macs. I seem to have
no problems with recipients who use Macs. However, those with PCs have
troubles with the attached files.
I have discovered that if I send a pdf file using the Apple I encoding,
then the recipient on a PC sees the file with an Acrobat symbol and can
actually open it properly. However, if I send a tar file then it shows up
as a generic document. Opening it results in garbage. I have discovered
that the problem is that the MIME type for the PDF file is correct, but the
MIME type for the tar file is text/plain rather than
application/octect-stream. How does Eudora decide which MIME type to use
for a file? Is it using Internet Config? Thanks,

Subject: i-Mac first impressions/Norton
Dear Digest readers,
Yes I know nobody asked me, but I am going to post this anyway. Today I
walked into a CompUSA and saw the i-Mac on display.
Contrary to what some articles on the net state, the mouse is very clear as
to the forward position for dragging it, like all mice are. The forward
(up) direction for the mouse is the same general direction the mouse button
is found on the mouse itself. The mouse is designed to work with your hand
as if you were dragging and clicking items on the screen with the fingers
pointed up. Just remember that, and you won't have trouble using it.
Also for those of you who haven't figured it out, the CD-ROM drive's eject
button is on tray itself, and not to the side of the tray. A friend of
mine said he couldn't even find the CD-ROM drive.
Keyboard seemed sticky to me, but that could have been because of all the
use it has gotten on the
display floor. Not a big deal, since according to one net article, you can
put a Microsoft Natural keyboard in the USB port to have a full sized
keyboard on the i-Mac.
Also contrary to what was posted on the net, it is possible to assign a
static IP address to the i-Mac, through the TCP/IP control panel.
The only thing preventing me from getting an i-Mac is the lack of PCI slots.
Still I think it is a great machine for anyone who needs to get on the
net, or get the benefits of having a computer who hasn't had one before. It
is also the perfect size for a college dormitory room.
--------
On a totally separate issue, has anyone tried Norton Utilities 4.0 yet? It
is now in the MacMall catalog. Does it have trouble with HFS+ like the
earlier Norton did?
Sincerely,
abrody@smart.net

Hi Harold,
First, you confuse two different things here. Tanzania is the type of
the mainboard, it has nothing to do with the hard drive.
Second, it is always a good idea to update the disk driver when you
update the operating system. If your Mac is "out of the shelf" - the
disk drive has Apple ROMs inside and an Apple logo on the outside - then
you can use the Apple driver as the system installer application on the
Sys 8(.1) CD proposes. If you have a third-party drive, with other
driver software, you need to ask them whether they have drivers for
System 8.x.
Good luck, Christian.

Subject: More old hardware questions
First, thanks to those who answered my previous cry for help. Things are
progressing...
Now I have received two SE/30's. One has a 9-pin plug coming out the back
(in the cut-out provided in the case) but I can't figure out what it's
for. The plug has 5 wires coming out the back which connect to a small
board that plugs into the power supply board where the original power
cable from the mother board plugged in (and that cable plugs into the back
of that adapter board. Then there is one thin wire that goes from this
adapter board down to the mother board (I know not where, yet, but it may
just be a ground).
I can't find any info on the hard drive because it is dead. No identifying
marks on the baord at all. It has one small chip on it from Texas
Instruments (a generic IC, my guess)
Any ideas? Could it be video out?
Thanks, Jerry

If you are stuck with something you cannot open, a solution which is not

Subject: Optimal system for 68030?
Hello,
First I thank all who sent me advice about my noisy monitor.
I possess a LCIII (68030 processor). This computer serves me well. I now
run system 7.5.5, but I only have the Update disks and not the disks of the
numerous previous updates. So when my system should break down, I possibly
am helpless. As far as I know, 8.0 alrady needs a 68040 processor.
Of course I made backups, but I don't like the idea of reinstalling a
system, that may not be in order.
What is the best way? Buying 7.6?

I was trying to connect a Mac 6100 to a local network via the ethernet
and a laserwriter to the Appletalk port (printer). The Mac was running
OS 7.5.5. with MacTCP. well, it would'nt let me do both. So I ran the
Network Switch Selector, and switched to OT v1.1. OT let me set the
Appletalk to printer port, and TCP/IP to ethernet. I entered all the
necessary assigned network IP, router/gateway, and name server. Still no
dice. Only the printer is visible in chooser. I can see the network only
if I set Appletalk to ethernet then the local printer dissappear. Some
one suggested Laserwriter Bridge. Was able to do this 2 way connectivity
when I returned to MacTCP. But this is mind boggling. What is going on
here?
I did this same setup on another machine a while back and the
OT/Appletalk method worked. Am I missing something or is it the wrong OT
version?
Thanks for the info.

Subject: Powermac 7200 won't boot from anything
Hi all-
We have a powermac 7200 in our lab that recently took a major dive.
One guy was using MS Word on it when he received a message stating that he had
to restart the computer.
Since that time, every effort to restart has failed. We have tried from
floppy, CD, etc. The monitor stays blank on start up, and the chimes play,
but I don't hear the hd spinning, and the floppy never spins when we try
starting from it.
I'm not a Mac expert, but sounds like a battery to me, except that there was
never any warning that battery failure was impending (and its only a year or
so old.)
Any advice would be helpful.
Thanks
Kevin

Subject: Printing Webpages
This is a silly problem that I have been unable to solve for years. Perhaps
somebody can help. When I print some web pages, they do not fit on the
paper and the overflow portion, often only a letter or two, prints on
another page. This is not only frustrating, it wastes a lot of paper.
I'm using a Personal Laserwriter 320 and LaserWriter 8. I have tried the US
Letter Small as well as US Letter Page Setup settings, but that does not
seem to help.
If I set the font sizes any smaller in Navigator, I can't read the monitor.
I have looked at the famous manuals and I never seem to be able to find
anything that addresses the problem?
Any serious advice for a silly problem?

Subject: Question on PB G3 Fan/Ram Disk
Good day, Info-Mac readers!
I have a question about the Powerbook G3:
Given that the 292mh runs "warm," has anyone created a little hack to
change the temperature at which the fan cycles on? My Powerbook cools
quickly and considerably when the fan finally does come on, but the
"thermostat" seems to be set pretty high. Surely this temperature-setting
must be stored somewhere in P-RAM. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance! If people reply to me directly, I'll summarize the
answers for the list.

Subject: Req:Mac RealPlayer Help
Just wondering if anyone else has had trouble with
RealPlayer5.0, i.e. conflicts with other extensions, etc. I
could take up a huge amount of space trying to tell you
all the problems I've had so I'll try to synopsise it.
Sometime around when I installed QT 3.0 (perhaps
before, perhaps after, I don't recall--but removing QT 3.0
didn't seem to help) I started having problems listening
to streaming web audio with RP. Worked 100% for a long
time, now I keep getting error 23--which basically is
supposed to tell me that the URL is invalid, when I know
for sure it is working just fine. Then, when I quit RP and
try to use my back button I get an alert box telling me
that the cached page is not available (this happens every
time I get the error 23 alert and only then--never see
this alert any other time). I have no problem listening to
RealAudio files that I D/L'ed to my HD before the
problem occurred, and I can access .ra & .ram files that
download rather than stream in real time. I have fully
trashed and reinstalled RP about 4 or 5 times, made an
extensive search of all of Real.com's FAQ's,
documentation, etc. and followed their directions TO THE
LETTER!!! I've also trashed and reconfigured every
possibly related pref file that I can think of--still, no luck.
There is one line of instruction in the troubleshooting/
installation tips that seems to be in error: When
configuring the RP plugin in applications for Comm 4.04 I
am asked to click on the "Application" radio button in the
"Handled By" section of the edit window, but it is grayed
out and inaccessible. I've had 2 responses to email from
them and their answers were practically verbatim
reiterations of information I had already found on their
website so, that was of no help. After my third email to
them trying to narrow down the problem all I got back
was a survey asking about how helpful the
correspondence with tech support was. Needless to say
they did not get a glowing review. They claim (and also
say they'll "look into it") that there are no known conflicts
with QT 3.0 but I've read some nebulous references to
this problem on other websites.
This should make no difference, because the basic
system is the same, before it futzed out and after, but
here goes: PCC PowerCenterPro 210, 32MB; RamDoubler
8, HD space for days, OS 8.1; Communicator 4.04.
This is really vexing me because I wanted to use their
products to put streaming audio on my website, but now,
I don't know for sure....
Thanks in advance for any help!!!

Subject: serialspeed 230
I recently downloaded a copy of serialspeed 230 from the infomac archive. Its
blurb announced that it would increase the speed of Internet service to about
230 bps, which sounded pretty good. When I downloaded it, the readme assured
me that it would work with AOL - once I downloaded the AOL plugin for my
particular system. It also assured me that it would work with USRobotics
modems. When I downloaded the special serialspeed AOL plugins, the readme
told me that it would not work with AOL AND USRobotics equipment.
This is disappointing, so, to those with AOL and USRobotics modems, don't
bother. I got a sense that serialspeed did not work with many combinations of
hardware/software, but did not really concentrate on the exclusion list.
The documentation seems to imply that my Global Village 33.6 platinum modem
will work with serialspeed, so I will try it.
What bothers me even more is the fact that the company which produces
serialspeed, Brookline software, includes a tech support email address, but
does not respond to queries. I am pretty dubious about the company. With
Corel, Microsoft, and Apple, you pay for support, but you get it, so all four
companies prove you get what you pay for.

I have two more comments on your summary in Info-Mac Digest V16 #157:
Aldus Fetch is now superseded by Extensis Portfolio 3.0. You can find
information on their website . There is also a
full-functioning demo which will work for 60 days.
If you want to provide cross platform catalogs, you may consider saving
index pages in html. You can do it with Netscape Navigator: For example,
if you have a volume "Test" and a folder "Websites", you can tell
Navigator to open the location . It will display
a directory listing, which can be saved in source format.
