Concerned Presbyterians, an organization of pastors and ruling elders in the 242,000-member Presbyterian Church in America, held a special meeting last fall on September 30 addressing the question of "When is it appropriate to leave a denomination?" The September meeting did not issue a call for secession. In an official statement, the organization declared that "after hearing both sides of the questions, the decision was made to 'call the PCA to be what she said she would be.'" "Recognizing that not all presbyteries are Biblical, the Steering Committee also authorized a committee to make plans for a 'Biblical presbytery,'" according to the official statement. "The steering committee further determined to have that study committee make a presentation at the March 1995 Concerned Presbyterian Day." The 1995 Concerned Presbyterian Day will convene at 9 am at the Holiday Inn Airport Convention Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. The keynote speaker, Greenville Presbyterian Theological Seminary professor Dr. George W. Knight III, will speak on "The Danger of Quasi-Confessional Documents." Knight, who studied at the Free University of Amsterdam - one of the two official seminaries of the Gereformeede Kerken in Nederland, the mother church of the Christian Reformed Church in North America - will base much of his presentation on work done at that school regarding Dutch Reformed and American Presbyterian documents which were intended as supplements to official denominational confessions of faith. "The thing that I'm looking forward to is how the conservatives inappropriately fought those documents and set up another standard," said Rev. Charles Wilson, chairman of Concerned Presbyterians. "We not only need to see the danger of nonconfessional documents but also to see how the conservatives who fought against these documents erred, and that's the point that Dr. Knight is going to show us." Knight has been heavily involved in denominational and broader church affairs for many years. A professor for almost twenty years at the official PCA seminary, Covenant Theological Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri, Knight also served as an administrator at Knox Theological Seminary, founded by Dr. D. James Kennedy of Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. A frequent writer on Scriptural inerrancy and role relationships between men and women, Knight is a member of the interdenominational organization "Christians for Biblical Manhood and Womanhood." Other speakers for the March 3 meeting are Rev. G. Brent Bradley, speaking on "What Does the Bible Teach About Church Polity and Discipline," and Rev. C. Michael Chastain, speaking on "What a Biblical Presbytery Looks Like." Opening worship will be led by Rev. Wayne Rogers.
