Merit IDRP Project Home Page

Under this Federal Aviation Administration grant for aviation research, Merit Network, Inc. developed an implementation of the publicly available Inter-Domain Routing protocol (IDRP) used by software systems to control the flow of routing information between ground stations and airplanes.

Merit's implementation of IDRP adds a protocol to the Unix-based 'GateDaemon' modular software called GateD. GateD, developed by Cornell University and other contributors, is useful in prototyping and deploying new Internet routing protocols that specify how routers communicate with other routers in different routing domains.

The software developed by Merit is integrated with an Aeronautical Telecommunications Network (ATN) research project router developed under a joint government/industry project managed by the MITRE Corporation. Under a continuation of this grant, Merit continued to guide the development of this leading-edge network technology by enhancing the protocol with advanced features.
