Portugal - shunter locomotives and rail tractors
This old shunter locomotive no.1427 brought a rake of older InterCity coaches to the Lisboa Santa Apolonia station. The shunter class 1400
was built by English Electric, Vulcan Foundry and Sorefame for the CP in 1967-69. 67 locomotives were built. The machines are based on
British Rail class 20 machines, but are designed for 1668 mm broad gauge. They were earlier used not only for shunting, but also for line
workings for example with passenger trains around Lisbon and Porto. However, as more rail lines have been electrified, there is less and less
work for these old machines. Some have already been sold to Argentina.

This DP 212 rail tractor of CP Infrastructuras is used mainly as a rail inspection vehicle,
often on the line along the Douro valley up from Porto. Picture at the Porto Campanhã

A similar rail inspection vehicle as above, this DP 234 was photographed 22.6.2012 in Régua

We can only guess what this wagon attached to the DP 234 tractor was for. There are no catenary wire
installations in the region. Picture in Régua 22.6.2012 by Ilkka Siissalo.
