Hi,
The short header format for the digest seems to be busted. I'm chasing it
down with starnine right now, and we will fix it as soon as possible. Sorry
for the problem.

BTW -- short header format removes the "MIME-Version 1.0" line from the
header and prevents mailers from putting the digest into a seperate
enclosure, among other things. If you want to use it you can go to our web
site, unsubscribe from the digest, and resubscribe with the short header
format. http://www.pht.com/info-mac/

Subject: [Q]: Male A/C connector for Apple 6115CD

I need to replace a cracked A/C (power cord) connector on the back of my
Mac 6115CD, which should be the same on any shipping Mac system. This is
a plastic piece which resides in the power supply, and has three metal
blades which insert into the power cord. I've been unlucky finding an
old broken Mac to cannabalize or a vendor who sells this piece.
Unfortunately, the PC world uses a much more common, very similar, part
that the Macs case won't fit over.

Anyone know who'd sell this part?

I Haven't tried Superboomerang on OS8, so cannot say if it works.
However, I am now trying Default Folder 2.7.3 which is compatible with
OS8. It is a great program, and has many of the features of Superboomerang.

Subject: An Open Letter to Steve Jobs

Folks,

I have made a web site with an open letter to Steve Jobs. I think like many
fans of Apple and the Macintosh we hope Steve Jobs' return signals a new
"Insanely Great" advance in computing. Apple should abandon attempts to make
a better GUI and try to move onto the next interface, speech. Apple should
make the computer that understands the spoken word. All of the different
pieces to make such a system exist and just need to be brought together. I
hope the Steve Jobs of old does not concede the cutting edge to Microsoft.
Rather, learn from your mistakes in exploiting the GUI and correct them as you

create the new paradyme, Speech enabled and smart computers.

If anyone knows Steve Jobs, tell him to visit this web site:

Subject: BUG?: Mac OS 8.0's Finder deselects opened files

I've discovered that on my machine (a PowerMac 8500/180 w/64MB RAM and 2GB
HD) System 8.0's Finder deselects files that are opened. I would *much*
rather it leave them selected after opening, as it did in 7.5.5. I can't
understand why they changed it. I'd be surprised if they made this change
intentionally. Anyone know a way around this?

Any idea of why I can't keep the comments?

My trusty Stylewriter 2400 passed on and I have replaced it with a new SW

work. The Apple Tech line suggested trying the SW 6000 drivers but they
don't recognize the printer. Has anyone been successful at getting Desktop

I had a similar problem a while ago, and it turned out to be a corrupted
MacTCP DNR file (in the System Folder). Trash the file, restart your
computer, and a new file will be automatically created. Also, what
version of Eudora Light are you using? When I had that problem, I was
using Eudora 1.3. I now use Eudora Light 3.1, which thus far has been
very stable. I hope that helps!

Good luck!

I don't know of any "E-mail Only" services, but you could get yourself a
"shell" account with a Internet Service Provider. These accounts usually
cost quite a bit less than full PPP/SLIP accounts, and then you would use a
program like Zterm or Microphone to dial up and log into the Unix system,
and then use the unix e-mail program PINE to do your e-mail. Pine is
actually a very advanced e-mail program, and this would be a easy and
inexpensive way to have e-mail access.

There are some Internet Service Providers, mostly local ones, that do offer
"E-mail Only" accounts, so you should check that out too. With most of
these, you would use a regular POP client such as Eudora or Claris E-Mailer.

Try the free Eudora Light, download it at Eudora.com or Qualcomm.com

I've been offered the loan of an Epson 9000 scanner to do a one off job. It

straight from the box. I disagree and would think that drivers etc would be
needed. Any advice from the list would be welcome.

> How do i make invisible files visible?

You can use ResEdit to make them visible (be sure to read the instructions re
using backup copies).

Easier, however, if all you want to do is throw them away is to use "Find
File." Open Find File and click on the "name" pop-up menu while holding the
option key down. The pop-up menu will be altered to include an item called
"Visibility."
Select that and then hit the "Find" button. All the invisible files will be
displayed in the Items Found window. You can drag them directly to the trash
from there. (Note: this only works in versions of "Find File" which display
everything at once in the "Items Found" window.)

DUH! Oh my. Yes, I erred.

(BTW it's "Get Item info...")

Thanks Chaz to push my nose unto a feature of the new, updated Snitch,
that I didn't know of. Usually I read all accompanying files like the
ReadMes etc, but this time I didn't. And I usually get Info by hacking
"Apple-I", so I didn't *have to * notice the expanded "Get Info" menu.

Duh! And thanks for enlightening me about this.

I recently installed OS8 and Norton 3.5.1 (In get info it says 3.5.1) on my

CDRom, or a floppy, or from the HD I get the msg "Bad modification date"

the desktop automatically rebuilds. I then use NDD-"bad modification

How do I stop this? I never had a problem with Norton 3.2 and OS7.5.5.

Subject: Power Protection (C)

Colleagues, I have said loud and long over the years that the best and
most expensive power protection is the cheapest insurance one can buy.

I had that message driven home yesterday. Again. I don't need many
such lessons. In the early 70's at Penn State our hot-stuff 300 baud
terminal into the university's mainframe would get fried every month or
so. We got some money, and I ordered (1) a set of replacement cards
for the modems and (2) a heavy duty surge protector for each. We never
used the spare modem cards after the surge protectors were on line. Are
any of you old enough to remember a 300-baud modem thrice the size of
a PowerMac 7200? Even remember 300 baud modems? I didn't think so.

I kept that lesson to heart in 1982 when I got my first personal computer.
Get the most expensive power protection possible. Back then it was $150
or so. Nowadays it's more like $50. Cheap insurance.

[Uh, yeah. I remember 300 baud modems, vt100s, adm 3A's. And I'm only 31.
How
about teco, Al? :-) -Gordon]

I sent the following note to the fine folk at TripLite this evening. They
seem to be best in show these days. And they proved it. I recommend 'em.

Al Bloom

--------------------------------------------

Folks, let me add a word of praise to those you've doubtless already
received. I've always insisted on the best power protection (yours)
for the computer equipment in our office. Our new secretary got her
nose out of joint when I allowed as how her purchase of two $7 surge
protectors was the dumbest thing she had done lately and she would
either return them or pay for them herself.

Yesterday several of our Buildings & Grounds types were futzing with
the building's power distribution panel when my machine went down.
With a pop and a lot of smoke from the Isobar. I have no idea what
those klutzes did, and neither do they. We din't do nuthin. I suspect
B&G is single handedly responsible for the university's "hire the
handicapped" program.

After the B&G supervisor verified that my outlet was indeed providing
120 volts again, I put in a spare Isobar and verified that the smoked
unit had done its job. It had surrendered its life so that its protected
equipment might live.

For that, folks, I thank you. You have a great product. I will continue
to buy it and to recommend it.
