Lesson 1: Verbs and Tenses

Verbs define action. A noun performs a verb.

But she hadn’t. She had stared at the eyes of this person, this woman. She had starred into those eyes, and to wanted to see them again. The moment was so strange. She had thought the woman was going to kill her right then with some type of thrown weapon, but it had only been a card. The same card in her hand now.

She turned it over again. There was only a single word: "Rue." She didn’t know what to make of it, nor how to find out who this person was. She wanted to find this woman, to find out why she was in the castle late at night, why she jumped out of the window, and if they could only spend more time together. She shook her head and stared at the card as a guard cleared their throat.

"Princess?"

She looked up at them. "Yes?"

The guard looked embarrassed. "I asked if you were ready to go to the market. We have arranged your passage and are ready to go if you are."

Rerlina turned to see the back of the loud woman’s head. Flowing, auburn hair cascaded down her shoulders. To his credit, George just sat there and waited until the woman fell quiet and then glanced at the princess before turning back. "Thank you for coming, Harriett."

"I'm sorry about Harriot – sorry, 'Rue'," George started. "She really is my best runner. Any time I have a need for something, she has been the one to do it. I'd normally pay her so much, but you did say you were in a hurry, and I did not think you would mind paying her more for the quick service."

"Yes, that’s fine," Reylina said. She was interested in talking more with Rue when she returned. If she had snuck into the castle, Reylina wanted to know. She was more interested in where the holes in the castle security might be. It did not appear that Rue was an assassin or other dangerous sort, but if she knew of a hole, it was worth discussing to find out where it was and how she might go about helping the guards fill it to prevent any future issues.

Reylina considered how she might go about starting such a question and then settled on something more innocent. "How long has Rue been around? I haven’t seen her before."

George thought for a moment and then scratched his head before answering. "Most of a season, I think? A few months, at least. She came into the shop and let me know she was interested in being a runner. I gave her some basic tasks and she excelled at them. After a few more, she quickly became the best runner I’d ever worked with in the village."

"The only issue I’ve had is that she can be hard to find at times. She also disappears for a few days at a time sometimes. And she had can be annoyed in the mornings, as you saw."

"I see," Reylina replied, looking pensive. "She seems... how to put this? Able to take care of herself? Like a fighter?" Reylina asked.

"Rue? Oh, yes. Yes. There have been some stories, you know." George leaned in conspiratorially. "It seems she might have gotten in trouble with the law in another village. Nothing officially, as far as I know, and I would not have invited her into the shop with you if I thought she would be a problem for you, but there have been some rumors. And, of course, there are stories about her, well... lovers."

Reylina laughed. "Really? A woman like that has stories about her relationships with other people?" Reylina joked, but was, if she was honest with herself, a bit disheartened by the news. Reylina did not know how she felt, but there was a spark of jealousy at the mention of other loves.

"Oh, yes," George went on with the tale, unaware of the emotions brewing inside Reylina. "I heard from the baker’s wife that Rue was rumored to have a lover among some distant royalty. The story goes that she fell out with her lover and was banished from the area. No one knows for sure where this was or what was the cause, but it is the only major story about her. As far as anyone knows, she did something somewhere and then eventually found her way to our small village and castle. I don’t think she is dangerous as a criminal, but, well, she might be a thief."
